Google's Electrcity Usage Could Power 100,000 to 200,000 homes!

I found this article about Google's power usage interesting...

  • Why are all of there data centers not utilizing solar panels? The article stated wind farms, but come on now. There is no reason why 50% of their energy can't come from renewable resources--its not like they don't have the money to implement it in the most efficient and aesthetically pleasing way possible.

    Imagine their Adwords revenue. lol

    • True that, thus they can afford that electricity bill and nice big houses in Silicon Valley and elsewhere.
    • Do YOU have any idea how difficult it would be? First, most wind power would NOT be feasible! They would have to find a location where it was, follow all the rules to build it there, sell it to the power company, and create a swap deal.

      Solar would only come part way, and you would have to follow all the codes and covenants, and could do it only if allowed by the buildings owner.

      Google, last I heard, used rather old equipment. It tends to use a LOT more power. ALSO, they have a lot of offices in BIG buildings. ALSO, they have LOTS of included businesses that could say the SAME!

      I could see it.

  • I wonder what that would add up to if they considered all of the devices currently connected to or using one of their products? It seemed like not too long ago AT&T said that they had to double their capacity on account of people watching youtube on their mobile devices.
  • Maybe they couldn't do it, ......but they could try.

    • We can do our effort by doing less google searches and watching less YouTube videos since each time that is done electricity is consumed. It shouldn't all be up to the corporations.

      So be green, use Google less.
  • Switched to fluorescent bulbs (the curly ones) ages ago. Built my own solar water heater 10 years ago. (It makes too much hot water, I have to cut back on the inflow all the time.) Have a home made wind generator to charge golf cart batteries and trolling motor batteries. I am a fanatic about appliances I buy. Even if the most efficient ones cost a few bucks more it pays out over a short period of time.
    During the first energy crisis in 1973 Congress almost mandated solar water heaters for new construction in the southern one third of the country. Large home builders beat it down but think about what could have been saved in energy over 38 years.
