What type of 'office' do you have?

I'll start.

Equipment:
I have a laptop and associated gear (Android, HD camcorder, 2 Digital Cameras, Fax/Scanner/Printer, portable tripod, headset)

Location:
Home Office - but no specific space... I move my stuff (not the printer) but everything else to wherever I can get a good internet connection, some quiet, and work more or less distraction free.

Sometimes (especially on the weekends) I have to drive away from home and bring my incredibly large laptop to a coffee shop - just to concentrate. Just now I'm sitting in the living room next to a pile of already folded laundry...[I really should put that away - it's a distraction in an of itself!]

(Someone always makes a crack about the size of my laptop - lol)

I also TRY to use my smart phone as much as possible when I'm on the road - so sometimes my car - or wherever I'm at is my office.

What about you - what kind of office situation do you have?

    Phone, laptop and HD camera.

Nothing else is really needed for what I do.

Yeah - Thanks Mick... I didn't mean so much equipment - although that's interesting (HD Camera especially) . . .

I was thinking more about the box you work out of - or to put it another way - the space you claim (or don't claim) for your "office."

      Do tell

I don't have a dedicated office in my apartment, I have a section of the lounge where I work so I can keep an eye on my son while he's playing in the main part.. thankfully it's open-plan so there's more than enough room for us both to do what we enjoy.

He gets quiet involved with what I'm doing and often helps when I shoot videos, which is really nice... teamwork and all that.

I have a drafting table that I just moved into the living room (I'm an empty nester). I'm typing on my laptop here now - it's next to a window with great light. I usually have some noise going, otherwise I hear every whir of the frig or sound from outside. It is easier to tune out the food channel.

I will often write from other areas of the living room when I feel like it. I like having the options. No problems with internet connections, so that is never an issue.

I have a smart phone but am all thumbs - literally - so I never write more than a text on the phone, but I do regularly keep myself updated on e-mails when I'm on the road.

I hear you about noises . . . when it's too quiet it's like my brain slows down - I usually have music on the Chill Channel, which is called "Sounds of the Seasons" - (Music Choice - cable) but these *******S always start playing the Oom Paa Paa Octoberfest music from Sept 17-Oct 20, than Halloween music until the end of October - so I'm not sure what to listen to now. Classical music makes me smart - but annoys me when it goes from quiet P to loud F.

Rude when that happens. Maybe I should get music choice. It would be nice to have a selection of types of music that aren't populated with DJ chatter! I wonder what it is about needing noise. I used to study in college in the local pub, and always wrote (dissertation - whatever) with the tv on or out in public.

LOL - I couldn't tolerate DJ chatter - but what would be worse would be the marketing....I'm allergic to commercials.

I have a great second floor office space, with a desktop pc, widescreen monitor, on a huge corner desk, along with a digital camera, phone, speakers, headset. There's plenty of room in my office for 2 bookcases, which are filled with all my favorite books.

The view from my office window is treetops..we live in a mature area of town so there's lots of trees! I love it, it's quiet and I am more productive than I've ever been

In my office there is a desk. Actually, a very dusty desk. On that desk, there is a laptop (emachines thing..) and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (I always have some books laying on the desk..). In my work time I always drink coffee. Lots of dark coffee.

So now you know mah cash-making environment.

I have an official office filled with all the office stuff. I also have a home office.

My official office is better for meetings and physical things, whereas my best mental work is produced in my home office.

      Sorry, didn't supply equipment information!

I work primarily on two Mac laptops, an iPhone and an iPad. I also use the iPad when I meet with clients to go over projects, etc.

My lofty goal is to completely run my business from my iPhone, but I know that won't ever be a true reality because I write too much and need a full keyboard and access to my multiple databases, text files, images and FTP capabilities (however I am investigating cloud alternatives). Am migrating work and tasks which do not require my hands to be on a keyboard to the iPad.

The hazard with the iPad is most of the sites where I conduct competitive research do not currently function on an iPad. Which is sad. But I remain hopeful.

How do you work your way around this?

Invest in a smaller one? I used to have a large laptop too, but upgraded a year and a bit ago to a 12.1" Lenovo Thinkpad X201 that's small and lightweight but still manages to boast full-size keys. Will never go back to using anything larger (and can't imagine working for long periods on anything smaller to be too comfortable).

My wife, mother-in-law and I share a 5 bedroom house, and we all have our own office spaces. Mine is upstairs in one of the former bedrooms on a desk we made from MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). Considering how heavy the stuff was to drag upstairs I shudder to think at how heavy high density fiberboard would be. LOL

I'm so programmed by Microsoft that I almost thought this thread would be asking if I use Microsoft office, OpenOffice, or something similar. (OpenOffice by the way)
Not having a smart phone, my phone is relegated to calls and texts (mostly from twitter notifications) for the most part. My computer is a desktop that I built myself a few years ago. I often listen to music on my headphones as I have an extensive music collection on my computer. (I've filled up almost a terabyte with mostly music)
I also have my synthesizer next to my computer, so I tinker with creating music in my office, too.

My biggest distraction is probably getting caught up in surfing the web when I am trying to focus on working on my marketing efforts. (That or obviously my many hobbies. LOL)

I do appreciate having a dedicated space to call my office, so I can condition myself to use it as such.

For a long time, my "office" was a tiny corner of the living room. Then last summer, we decided not to rent the upstairs apartment anymore and the living room became my real office.

This year, I have made more progress in growing my business than in the over two years that I was full-time prior to that.

      Coincidence? I don't think so.

I do now have a netbook so I can be portable when necessary, though.

*Don't have distractions in the room

*Don't have posters/stuff on your walls that contrast/pull your eye away.

*Don't be shy to up your screen real-estate (from 1 to 2 monitors or 2 to 3).

*Make sure you're in a GOOD chair = makes a world of difference if you're in that seat for long periods of time - ergonomics = productivity.

      Second room:

I've thought about having actual office space because it's REALLY hard to find balance in life vs. work however it's simply all about discipline with your time/tasks/personal life.

I would find it EXTREMELY hard to do what I do with a simple laptop/couch/corner of the room/living room that's shared at any time/etc (I'm sure I could, even without all the music gear etc. but it would really limit me not just in music). You NEED to be able to zone in on your work whether you're a JV broker, a designer, a copywriter... any artist/talent or skill set is best utilized when you are inspired and being your most creative. Hard to do that with rugrats running around, the TV on, your partner taking phone calls, etc.

This home studio setup has been done in pretty much every single place I've ever lived and will DEFINITELY say that a big part of my success has been reinvesting into my workspace/setup to churn out the best quality stuff from both the technical side of this biz, to the actual BIZ side of this biz as you find yourself getting into your highest state of... .. .. euphoria while creating/LOVING what you do, all stemming from the room itself in my case, and probably in most others cases that do any advanced/very creative tasks (i.e. most of our world).
If there was a prize - you'd be the clear winner.

My office is in my bedroom.

I've lived in this 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom house (mostly by myself) for the last 8 years. (I'm single with no kids.) This house is GREAT for roommate situations though, since the master bed/bath is on one side of the house, along with the formal dining room and living room. The other side of the house has the other 2 bedrooms, bathroom and the family room. This is my side of the house. When I do have people living with me, we each have own own living/dining area and only have the share the kitchen.

My intention was always to transform one of the bedrooms into an office, but I never got around to that.

I've had people live with me for short periods (Mom, sister, ex-fiance) and so I've bedroom-hopped some of that time. But my sister-in-law, her son, and her mother have just moved in with me, so I'm relegated to keeping my office in my bedroom. That's not necessarily a bad thing as I hibernate a lot. My bedroom certainly isn't huge, but it's a nice size and works well.

I COULD have moved my office into my living room, but since other family members (including my 6-yr old nephew) live here, that's not practical. I need privacy and quiet to work. Even when I was living here alone, I didn't care to have my stuff in the open. I prefer some privacy, even from visitors.

      My equipment is

      1. Laptop
      2. All-in-one printer/scanner/fax
      3. 2 cameras (the FLIP and Kodak zi8)
      4. Logitech microphone
      5. Computer workstation/desk (not very decorative, but sturdy and durable)
      6. Office chair. (It's very comfortable, but doesn't have armrests. I think I made a mistake getting one without armrests, so I may be buying another one in the next 2-3 months. We'll see.)
      6. 3 filing cabinets

Yes, this is all in my bedroom. (But it's not as bad as it sounds.)

I'm also a HUGE bookworm and have A LOT of books. Dad just built some custom bookcases for me. In fact, I have yet to put the books ON the bookcases! :pSince my bedroom is pretty well full , the bookcases are in my living room.

I just got a new job working from home but had to drive down to Ft. Lauderdale every day for training for 6 weeks. I HATED every minute of it. Aside from the commute, the environment was HORRIBLE. The building wasn't great and the room we trained in smelled like mold. I think it was in the ventilation in that room. Yuck! The desks and chairs were also very uncomfortable.

My home environment is a dream by comparison. My dad (who's also my landlord) finally completed some remodeling. I have new floors (which he laid last year) and my furniture is organized. I even have some new (to me) furniture: a dining table and matching cabinet. I need to get more (and better) furniture, but what I have is serviceable for now. I put a gorgeous new comforter on my bed and I like to have candles burning, both in my bedroom and on my dining room table.

The next step is to buy some pretty curtains.

Except for my day job, I prefer to lay on my bed with my laptop. (I have both dermatological and orthopedic problems which make laying down more comfortable.) I CAN move around the house with my laptop, but generally don't. I sometimes take my laptop to Barnes & Noble or Starbucks if I REALLY need to get out of the house.

When I'm working, at my day job or on my own biz, I also like to have music playing. I use the music in my iTunes on my computer and just keep looping the playlist. I turn on the soft music playlist (NOT the dance music playlist ) and keep the volume low.

My day job is call center work (tech support), which is extremely stressful. Rude, demanding customers yelling at you all day and calling you the most awful names. I think it's important to create an environment that supports your success. Because of the stress of my day job, music playing and candles burning help to create a relaxed and peaceful environment, which helps keep my stress levels down.

While the office in my head looks very similar to that ^^^^^^

A cheap Toshiba Laptop (JUNK) soon to be a MacBook Pro, a 500GB passport external hard drive, HP all-in-on printer, Motorola "Droid" smartphone, and a 4G MiFi from Verizon. When possible, I'll hook-up the HDMI and use the 40" LED TV for a monitor.

Ton of notebooks... my mini whiteboards.

Environment, no office space, kids, animals, screaming, fighting, constant interruptions...

I work from my bed and sleep at my desk... gotta love this business!

    Oh Yeah...Tons of coffee!

      Too freakin funny Will.

Looks like the WSO Academy to me.

      On a serious note...

Dedicated office room where I do not get disturbed.

Desktop with dual 24" monitors for increased productivity. You'd be amazed how much time you save over 1 year not having to open and reduce windows.

Good speaker set to listen to the muzak.

Notepad and pen to scribble ideas.

Smart pen and book. Awesome product for outsourcing tasks.

      Most importantly...

      Deluxe espresso machine.

Well I would describe it as a home office but I am actually set up in the garage with my two pc's, 1 laptop, 5 monitors, all in one printer and phone line.

One day I hope to progress to actually converting the garage into my office but that wont be for a while yet!

Like the lyric in the song, 'Papa was a rolling stone, wherever he laid his hat was his home...'

I think your garage qualifies as a home office...but don't you worry about moisture and cold?

I had one of the rooms in my house fix and renovated exclusively for my "office". Although it won't really passed on the standards of what an office should look like, but that is where I generated my income despite being just a part time in the IM business. I had in there my 21" monitors and an upgraded motherboard, processor, an additional memory and not so-updated video card graphics for my past-time hobby, playing video games. I just recently added a cabinet for my book collection and a laptop on the other side of the table just in case there would be a power interruption, I could go on with my online work just by using a router for WIFI from my neighbor.
The pictures that were uploaded in this thread makes me think that I really need some arrangements to do with my office since it's a bit "unarranged" in a sense that the position of the table and the cabinet are in a way, messing the space for extra movements.
As long you we are productive in the area where we have been "in the office", that is the most important part of it.

My office is in a room in my (finished) basement. Well actually not even the whole room, just a corner of it where my desk is located with my computer and all the electronics that go with it.

The only thing I need is a can of coke and a pack of Marlboro and I am good to go.

Its very quite down there, plus I have my baby doggy sitting next to me or laying on the couch in front of me taking naps (while snoring, its the sweetest sound in the whole world). That makes it the perfect place for me to work.

I have tow full time day job, and a lot of stress that come with them. So, having that space to just do what I enjoy without being interrupted not only helps me get things done, it also serves as a "decompression chamber" for me from all the stress from my day jobs.

I own a small business centre and have my office based in there. I have an often 'untidy' desk with a 'huge' whiteboard behind me. Then there's just me and my laptop. A business in a box is what I often call my laptop because really... That is all I need.

I also like working from home occasionally, especially if creating videos. Remember though guys that you don't 'need' an office. An office is an overhead and with this type of business it isn't always a necessity.

I work from my room. I've rented desk space before, it was nice having a separate office, but honestly I get just as much done from my home desk. It saves me some money too.

While on the move, I have a Windows 7 laptop and an Android smartphone. I use a lot of apps to keep organized and in touch. My friends and family think I'm a bit of a workaholic, I guess they're right though..

I use to have a dedicated office in my home complete with energizing paint colors, awards and clips on the wall. It was a gift to myself for "making it." All that inspiration and the room quickly became my personal junk room. I never even opened the door except to drop more clutter. The space was way to intimidating. Now, I know there is no such thing as "making it," and my office is anywhere my creative juices flow.

I specifically got into IM to have a mobile lifestyle. My "office" was an ancient ThinkPad laptop and a blackberry. I would do design work from my home office that doubled as ebay storage and had a much more powerful desktop for the Adobe Suite.

After my first couple of successes I splurged and got a brand new (at that time) Asus EEEpc netbook.

I could nearly fit it in my pocket and 5 days of week my office was the local college area as the wifi extended far and was free, so i could go to any restaurant, bar , coffee shop or park and work!

hmm, didnt realize I couldnt post images, just have been working on renovating my new house and building out a home office space. So grabbed a few pictures of the office as it is right now.

anyways.. so new daughter kind of ended my mobile lifetsyle so the home office is

50 plasma tv in living room
Office Space is directly next to living room

PC I picked up on a great deal via CL - Big Gaming Monster runs a HDMI cord through wall to plasma.

Can sit in living room and play on the oversized "monitor"

Actual office has 2 Desktops running 2 monitors linked via Synergy, so can use one keyboard/mouse

In a built in tv niche in the wall, I have a third monitor connected to a small netbook (asusee) that runs audio/movies tedtalks while I work on any design related stuff. It also doubles as a presentation screen if I have local clients in the office as I can control that via synergy also

The whole system can be controlled with my android using a remote app

The property is about an acre and I can walk down to my stream, sit by the water in some old porch swings and use my wifi on some days (wifi extenders in place) or in some weather conditions (or something, sometimes it just doesnt reach that far) tether the phone to the old laptop. I do that primarily if working on writing/text/code processes.

Maybe in a few days Ill have the post count to share an image. As my description is lacking
