Bill Hicks was a brilliant comic observationalist from the same school as George Carlin - Though Carlin will forever remain head of the class.

Hicks had a great way of cutting through the BS and making it funny.

I guess I will have to be the first one to mention Richard Pryor, as he is still considered one of the funniest comedians by comedians.

His bit about burning himself up remains one of the great pieces of comic material -
the only problem was, he literally had to walk through fire to get it!

I'm not sure if some of the comics today should be called comedians -
They are more like Stand Up Shock-Jocks.
Just swearing lines does not make it funny - it still has to be funny or insightful without the swearing.

Personally I have so many favorites it is hard to think of them all. We have to diferentiate between Stand-up comics and comedic Actors, though many have crossed over successfully.

Many great actors started out as comics - and some great comic actors started out as serious actors. Some write all their own stuff - some relay the talented writing of a team of others.

An Actor gets to act, then waits to hear reviews - a Stand-up has to stand there and take immediate feedback, and hopefully not hear the sound of crickets or hecklers...which is tougher?

But, like any other "art", it is subjective...

I actually tried to get into amateur night at a comedy club, but they never returned my calls. I accidentally learned that I make people laugh when I do public speaking, though it was a serious speech and I certainly wasn't trying to be funny. So I figured I'd just give the serious speech that I did before and I'd be a hit.

Man, a LOT of great names on this list!

It's tough to figure out a favourite: I am a fan of Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), but also of Mike Myers (Austin Powers).

I am not really "up" on contemporary comedians. I see them on TV and tune out because of the language and subject matter.

For that reason, I think one of my all time favourites is Red Skelton because his humour was always respectful and family-friendly.

Seriously, no love for Mitch Hedburg? I love the guy and may he rest in peace.

His delivery is so great and awkward at the same time.

He also had diagnosed social anxiety disorder. He was known for doing an entire show with his back to the audience because he would not be able to get through an entire sentence if he had to face them.

He solved the issue by wearing his famous rose-colored glasses, hiding his eyes behind his hair, and drugs and alcohol -- the latter of which took his life.

That's a great example Terra - he is funny...

I used to have a tape from PBS called "Look Who's Laughing Now"...
It was a documentary in the lives of Stand-ups with disabilities, and it was hilariously funny, not only because they were all great comics, but because they also raised awareness about their respective problems with being labled as handicapped, and not handicapable, impaired, or challenged...with their great perspective and comedic insight.

          Thanks 3M!

Josh makes me laugh and warms my heart all at the same time.

Any comedian can be funny, but to be funny and inspirational and bring understanding to conditions most people don't ordinarily think about, is admirable.

Best comedy mind of all time was Johnny Carson.

He was funny every night for 30 years. Plus, he could play the straight man as well as anyone and could ad lib. Victoria Jackson said the difference between Carson and Letterman was the Dave always tried to be funny, where Johnny would make HER funnier.

Next would be Groucho Marx. He invented a style that's still copied today. He could also ad lib with the best of him. I used to watch him on You Bet Your Life and he was hilarious.

Richard Pryor is also on my list of best of all time.

Of the younger generation, Carlos Mencia makes me laugh out loud. He has the most diverse audience of anyone...You'll see blacks, whites, asians, latinos. He really crosses over cultures better than anyone.

Chris Rock can also be really funny.

  • In the same vein as a quick quip comedic mind, interviewer in the Carson mold...Carson was a very entertaining fellow, no one could do a nightly monologue like him, (he did die a thousand deaths some nights...hiyoo!) but he tried to remain neutral on many issues, or just joke about them...

I have to give props to Jon Stewart in this respect - Jon takes matters into hand.

In an interview mode, he can put a take on a serious discussion that makes you relate to the important issues on something, and at the same time, is funny.

It surprises some guests, that when he starts talking about their book, he brings up points that make them say "wow - you actually read my book!"

And he can joust, as well as jest, easily, with some of the quickest comedy quests...
