My choice would be Gandhi, because the producers managed to make a boring subject interesting.

Ip Man was a real person but Ip Man 1 and 2 were complete fantasies.

What I found very funny in Ip Man 2 was that Kung Fu masters fought so eloquently and well choreographed at the beginning, only to be trashed in an utterly disorganized manner by a boxer at the end.

Thanks John, didn't realize they made a movie about Yip Man.

It's a fine art and one of Bruce Lee's first (if I'm not mistaken)

IF you go for one of the funniest fairly recent comedies-- It would have to be "Raising Arizona" , But I absolutely loved the truths that came out of " Sullivan Travels" , a comedy from the other "Great Recession".

In this scene, the Japanese general is making the starving chinese laborors fight for his entertainment with Japanese black belts... to prove chinese style is inferior. They get a half a bag of rice for their family each time they win a round. Yip mans first friend in this scene was beaten to death in the ring, and his other friend just got shot in the head for losing against 3 black belts, so Yip man goes in mad and says "give me Ten" He is weak and practically starving here, the peice of bread he lays down was his workers lunch that he is taking home to his wife so she can eat!

At the end they throw ten bags of rice at him, but he is insulted and walks away from it, picking up his dead friends rice to take to his family, and inform them he had been killed. This isnt just about fighting, its about honor.

I believe this is a true story:

That angered the Japanese greatly, to the point that they ordered another kung fu master, surnamed Leung, to challenge Master Yip Man. Yip Man accepted only after being asked many times. Master Leung thought his punch very powerful and used it against Master Yip. Yip Man immediately executed the Wing Chun "Horse Stance and Kwan Sao" to defend himself, and then turned around and kicked Master Leung to the ground. After this occurrence, Yip Man left Fo Shan due to the increased pressure the Japanese placed on him. However, he still continued helping the Chinese government suppress the Japanese."

Yip Man is famous mainly because of his association with Bruce Lee. The greatest martial arts here in recent times in "Wong Fei Hung"

By the way, I just saw an epic film by Jackie Chan called "1911" about the Chinese revolution. It was Jackie Chan's 100th film and is due to be released worldwide. However, the film failed badly in that it made a very fast moving and interesting subject very slow and boring. Jackie Chan was completely out of his place in such as serious film.

Wow, no one mentioned Tombstone? Little Big Man is also good, moving away from westerns. How about Crank? Now that is an action film. Cool Hand Luke another good one.

    John,
I normally agree with your posts, but I have to say the Ip Man movies are one of the reasons I cannot stand martial arts movies in general. 2-dimensional plot with horribly fake fight scenes. It hurts my brain.

    Quicksurf,
The Usual Suspects is the best "gangster" movie of all time. Kaiser Sose is a true bad-ass.

    James,
Tombstone, Little Big Man, and Cool Hand Luke, but Crank?? You can't possibly put that in the list of top action movies? I will never get that 2 hours of my life back.

LOL, yep, a "hero" to live up to is good for everyone, I agree.

Hey, I'm just stating my opinion about the movies, not the man himself, and most certainly not against anyone who likes the movies.

And actually, I do absolutely agree with your point on the importance of honor, and its portrayal in the films.

Hard Boiled starring Chow Yun Fat and directed by John Woo. The hospital gun battle scene, amazingly shot in one take, will blow you away. This was made before the era of SFX; hence, all of the post-processing was done manually. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend that you do.

Wow guys , this thread is great so many films to check now and I think this list will grow...

    The Shawshank redemption
    Midnight Express
    Ben Hur
    Schindler's List
    Time Tunnel 60's series

There's a film from 70's I watched when I was 7 years old, the guy arrived in a city on his car with no one around but some men in black wearing glass and they start to hunt him until... I won't tell you the end.
    Anyone knows this film?
I'd love to watch it now, I never watched again ever since, I don't know the title of it, the main actor could be Paul Newman or Steve Mcqueen, but I'm not really sure.
