It's Insane What Some People Will Spend On Magic The Gathering Cards

I'm not talking about the really GOOD cards that are actually worth the price
tag because they dominate. I'm talking about the okay cards that have price
tags greater than some of the better cards out today.

One example is Liliana Of The Veil. If you go to Ebay, she's currently going for
$60 and up. She's the highest priced of all the current cards in the Standard
rotation. She's good, but she's not $60 good.

And the sheep are flocking to buy it by the herd.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not cheep. I've spent way more than $60 on
a card, but when I did it was because that card was kick ass.

Liliana is a joke at this price tag.

What are these people thinking? Why are they buying into the hype. They're
going to find out that she's not all that great and when they do, they're
going to kick themselves for shelling out $240 for a playset.

I spent $450 for a playset of Mana Drains. Mana Drains make Liliana look like
a turd on a stick.

Totally boggles my mind what they're paying for this thing.

Okay, end of rant. Feel free to flame away, especially if any of you
actually play this whacked out game.

    Collectors' mania knows no bounds, restraint or logic. The most otherwise-rational people can start displaying signs of addictive behavior over it, I think. There's stuff you just have to have. (Not "Magic The Gathering" cards, in my case, but there are things I'd pay crazy money for, too ).

    It's a kind of "distant cousin" - albeit with differences, too - to things that can happen in the art markets, I think?

      Well, I got a chuckle. As a non-gamer, I can't believe people spend time on this stuff....let alone paying for "cards" or arguing the 'value". But that's just me, the non-gamer.

    It's not just cards. My brother in law has been buying and selling collectible memorabilia for over 20 years and I am astounded at what people pay for certain things.

    I remember when Pez dispensers were big. Certain ones were fetching $2,000 (for a candy dispenser).

    When my son got in to Pokemon cards, we went to eBay for some and I was shocked at some of the prices on those as well.

    Just goes to show - anything is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.
