Yes you read that correctly.
After 24yrs of employment I'm now out of a job.

Micro-Tech Automotive Industries has officially closed.

I arrived at work today to be informed that we are Out Of Business.

Worst part is the bank was there and nothing could be taken from the building untill we can show proof that it belongs to us.

Whats that mean? Well, My LapTop with all my business info is there.
Yes I have everything backed up on a hard drive and I'm typing this on my Grand daughters ittiy bitty lap top.
[ ] <-actuall size...lol

Already missing my 17 Toshiba

Any way the purpose of this post it to let Warriors know that I may away for a while to take care of loose ends.

It's going to be tough loosing a 60K yr income but I'm not a quitter and
I'll figure it out.

Anyway, As I said, I may be away for awhile and I just want to let you know why.

Have a Great Day!
Michael
PS. I had to sneak into the Main Forum via another thread on the forum
because the Main WF page would not load???

I know others were having this problem so now I can relate.

    Man,

That's bad. If they want to sack anyone or go out of biz, wouldnt they take the courtesy to tell in advance? And after 24 years of service?? That sucks!

Hang in there Micheal, and hope everything goes well. I guess it is time for a new adventure then as a FULL TIME IMer :-D

So sorry to hear this, Michael. Sounds like the company did a great disservice to its employees by not warning them of the upcoming problem. I assume this is a foreclosure action? What a shock that must have been.

Sounds like you need to hit IM fulltime. You have the knowledge and skills - now you have the time, too.

Had that happen once, and it was no fun at all. We thought something was up when the owner was hanging out in her attorney's car for half an hour before we opened, then they came in, looking grim, and called a meeting. You know what came next....

Losing a job is temporary while attitude is forever.

Look at this as an opportunity to pursue your dream business full time without the burden of going to work each day and some money coming in from your unemployment benefits.

Now is the time to be aggressive and really lay it on the line.

That is horrible. You must have been terribly shocked.

Since the bank is there, it does sound like a foreclosure.
If there is a rep from the bank there, identify your computer. If your computer requires a password to logon, tell the rep to enter the password and that should be all the proof they need to give you your computer. If you do not have to log on, the bank rep can turn it on and you can tell him/her certain documents or programs on it.

It's scary. I've lost a few jobs but not after so many years of service. When one door closes, another one opens. There is something really good just waiting for you.

    Take care.

Wow, what an utterly horrible thing to experience. Lots of hugs and good thoughts flying to you!

Love your attitude. I always think that everything that life throws at us is our guardian angels saying, hey! It's time to make a change....and since we know how stubborn you are, we'll just make it happen yesterday.

So soul-searing! I've been thru a lot of really devastating issues meself...but after the pain and hurt and frustration and anger and sorrow burn themselves out, what's left is the solid core of steel that is your soul and character.

And that will *always* save the day....literally.

I always tell my kids - like a samurai sword, the hotter the flame, the more tempered the blade. It's hell to go thru but the benefits (days/months/years down the road) eventually do make it all worthwhile.

    Good luck!

Thanks. I know someone else that needed to hear that today.

Michael that sucks. I love the way companies keep things hush hush so they can keep the workers right up to the minute they don't need them any more. Give them 24 hours to get your stuff back. They don't have a right to hold it - especially in a termination situation. They have 24 hours to pay, so that should include your stuff.

You're gonna do fine. They are the ones who are screwed.

Wow, that is sad. I read about the company here
    company info
It sounds like it has a long history, and one that possibly ended due to jobs going overseas or similar.

There is going to come a time when people like us rebuild this country, when the hotshots at the top have their wings clipped and people like us become the innovators. We have the potential, and we just need the freedom to go out and start small businesses that can compete. The big businesses are no longer serving us well.

      Michael,

I'm very sorry to hear this news. I've been there. No fun. I've also been on a management team that kept our jobs while we had to lay off 158 workers on a paycheck Friday without giving them any notice. That sucked just as bad. I had to say good-bye to a lot of friends that day.

      Hi Michael,

Very unpleasant story. But, if you can give proof to them, you can get your comp back, I'm sure.

Anyway, I can only say that if someone pushed a cart for 24 years, he deserved to get information on the situation in advance.

On the other hand, as I read your contributions here a few years, I think, will not cause problems for you to perform IM full-time. You have experience, knowledge, and realationships. If you'll do IM full-time, you can make much more money than before.

Wow. Mind blowing - I have been laid off before in bank mergers and even when you know it is coming it is a big shocker - even with severance pay etc., but to have it this way with nothing is absolutely horrendous.

Michael, sorry to hear that, and surprised. I thought you were already a full time marketer. Nows your chance. I was laid off from a job I had for 13 years. Used the severance pay to buy my first computer. Long story short . . . it's the best thing that could have happened to me.

I took another job I didn't like just to pay the bills and worked it 48 hours a week while putting in another 40 a week learning about all things internet and building a business. It was hard putting in all those hours, but it paid off. I've been full time self-employed for over 12 years now and love it.

You already know a lot of what I had to learn, so I have every confidence you can make it work if you decide to go that route. Good luck with whatever you decide. If I can be of any help let me know.

That sucks, but not surprised, outsourcing is here to stay.

One guy told me he was a Digital Satellite salesman doing well but the whole department got laid off due to outsourcing that work to China.

Any jobs bill or talk of job creation by anyone is SCAM talk, PERIOD, without job protection, trade protection, industry/patent protection and equity of the afore mentioned.

The extremely sad part is, NO infrastructure, programs or system is in place or plan to be in place for current and future students of school/college, trade schools and other schools or employment/job training to this reality and fact of the 21st century in this world economy.

That fact is going to be the fuel accelerant for an already spark of anger and frustration.

Just to be clear, higher wages, requirements to buy american, and unions, CAN NOT, HAVE NOT, and WILL not work! You want to save jobs on the whole?

        1. Lower taxes in business, to attract it.
        2. Increase import duties to compensate for unfair practices, reduce H1Bs and reduce subsidies for them, and companies that support them.
        3. HEY, bring back the old trade limits. Did you know it used to be a FELONY to help china to do what it is doing to the computer industry now?
        4. make copyright/patent/food/drug violations a crime EVEN if from CHINA!
        5. Improve schools, by having better curricula and teachers.
        6. And if the government wants to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a hammer, let it be a 100% AMERICAN one! That means even the IRON was mined here.

Just #2 would INSTANTLY get rid of almost all unemployment. There are MILLIONS of residents that aren't citizens, but are employed in high paying jobs. And in the long run, it would MAKE money. SURE prices would go up, but wages would too.

I could say more, but that would be considered too political. I work with this stuff ALL THE TIME. I know FAR more about it than most.

BTW, The educational divide and degradation starts LONG before college, so the SOLUTION must! If everyone over 40 suddenly got cancer, you would NOT try to cure it at 40 in the future, but try to prevent the degradation over time that LEADS to the problem.

Bringing a KNIFE to a GUN fight or better yet, bringing a ROCK to a F-16 fight is NOT a fight at all, more like a sport.

It is either going to be entertainment, sport ( for the F-16) or a massacre.

A "Win" with strings attached and conditions that pretty much change the flavor but keeps things pretty close to the same is NOT a win, but an a illusion of a win, a temporary pacifier, what you give crying babies.

Go to Las Vegas. People "win". Sure.

That's why they keep on building more casino's, to lose money so people can win and be happy, sure.

The Law of Diminishing Returns is NOT a "win" or a fight or a "fight to win", sorry.

1% winning while 99% lose in legitimate, honest practices is a Las Vegas system, not a system of seriousness, fair, honest legitimacy. The house edge is a Gambling System, just like the Mobsters of old invented it to be.

But persons of ALL manner of intellect and intelligence still go and try to win, doctors, mathematicians, lawyers, prosecutors; so much for the use of intellect and academia as a pure measure of intelligence and worth.

Playing musical chairs or 3 card monte with infinite loopholes as a constant result of what is pathetically deemed as "choice" does not qualify as a definition of the term "fight" or fighting.

The only fight against 3 card monte is choosing not to play and giving non-paroled life sentences to those that start the game and steal the assets of those that are considered to have lost in that "game".

Just to clarify...The mob didn't invent gambling or the odds and many gambling games were played for centuries before Las Vegas was a city.

What the mob did though was hire accountants to do the math and calculate the actual odds. I believe one of the first to do this was Bugsy Siegle at the Flamingo who hired a guy Edwin Silberstang(?) who calculated the odds for all the games.

The only game Edwin Silberstang didn't really get correct was blackjack and this was later exploited by guys like Edwin Thorpe, who's "Beat the Dealer" was the first card counting system.

Edwin Silberstang has written a number of great books on gambling and games over the years...

The only fight against 3 card monte is choosing not to play and giving non-paroled life sentences to those that start the game and steal the assets of those that are considered to have lost in that "game".
I love 3 card monte dealers...They only cheat greedy people who want something for nothing.

      Hi Michael,

Like Dennis, I was surprised to learn that you weren't already a full-time IMer.

Sorry to hear your news, but I agree with the others - you clearly have what it takes to replace and surpass whatever your job was providing. Once you get over the initial shock, I'm sure you won't look back.

Wow, Michael, sorry to hear that. I can imagine how you feel because when I was fired a few years back, it floored me. However, that was my impetus to go full time and I haven't had to have a job since so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that the same things happens for you.

First thing, apply for unemployment. That isn't as much as the paycheck, but for at least six months, it will be less that you have to worry about while you figure out what to do next.

Will be thinking of you and if there is anything I can do, feel free to get in touch.

WOW!, I'm seriously humbled by all the replies to my thread.

    Thank You All So Much!

Dennis and Frank, No, I've never choosen to go full time in IM.
I've stated it here in the WF before that I do this part time just to give my
family things we wouldn't normally have. I'm not a material type of guy.

All I need is a safe place, food and my family and I'm happy.

I'll get through this. I've always worked better under pressure.

I've been continplating going full time for a year or so now and I look at this as a
    challange.

Today, after learning the news, I went out and talked to a few business owners. "4"
One said yes to me creating them a site and no I didn't use the pitty me card...lol

Also I talked with a prior client and he may have a few deals lined up for me.

I've been doing IM since 2001 and granted for the first couple of years I was just
trying to figure out the puzzle. As we all know, trying to figure out something that
is alway changing leads to confussion. It took me 3-4 years before that sunk in.

I loved my day job. That is why I stayed there so long. I was the Plant Manger/Senior Engineer. I was #2 on the totum pole so it was kinda shocking
to find out the way I did.

It's Okay. I know I will land on my feet.

It was my Destiny and I'm using Destiny's Computer at this time to make this post.

Life is good but the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

I want to thank those that have sent me PM's. I'm now going to read them.

    Have a Great Day!
    Michael
PS, How was I able to press the thanks button on all of you today???

      Michael,

Sorry to hear the bad news. I lost 2 jobs in my life unexpectedly - both times my wife was 8 and a half months pregnant (first with my ex-wife, second with my current wife). Sucked big time, but like you, I'm no quitter.

I don't know exactly what you did at your job, but you said:

Perhaps you can hang out the old Consulting shingle. In tough economic times, certain industries prefer reducing their payroll and using consultants.

I left my pharmaceutical job (as an instrumentation and controls specialist) 4 years ago. I set up my own shingle and now contract back to my old company probably 2 to 3 days per week on average and it adds between $5 - $10 k per month to my bank account (before taxes and expenses, of course).

Same with your IM - not sure what you do, but with my brother in law, we take on off-line clients and build websites and do the marketing thing and that puts more green in the bank.

And I do still work full time - although from home.

There are opportunities And I am sure you already have a few things in mind.

      Good luck,

BTW Michael, I literally helped a business START! I played a big part of it. They COULD have made a LOT of money! They EASILY turned a profit on their first kiosk before the year was over.. I, and a select few, wondered how they could go national so quickly. And they bought EXPENSIVE stuff you can't imagine ANYONE buying. They had TONS of potential.

SO, HOW did they do it? They DIDN'T! Before the year was out, they went BANKRUPT! Some stuff was purchased with a PROMISE! My point? They didn't even tell ME! One I THOUGHT was my closest friend.

I can sympathize, but I've never been at one company for that long - let alone been screwed so bad I couldn't even take personal belongings home. And 60k is a big chunk of steady income to work around...

They certainly planned this operation - the bank doesn't just "show up" and give Sorry Charlie without notice to the brass...

(EDIT: WOW! I didn't see you were #2 - how did this get by you? You didn't see any signals?
was this a sole proprietor or a corporation or a buyout?)

I'm sure you'll be OK, but losing a job you've had and liked for 24 years has to feel like losing a second home and family.

When I stopped driving a cab, it wasn't the job I missed (at all)...It was the other drivers. I missed talking sports and music and problems with them and playing "hookie" and going to lunch or catching a movie together when things were slow. I think this will be the hardest for you to overcome...The people you got to know over time...

Hey, Michael, sorry to hear of the upsetting loss of your employment. Sixty grand could be tough to replace, given the current economy, but it is possible.

I experienced something similar almost 10 years ago when the business I had been with for 22 years closed its doors. We were a local branch of a large company and they tried to cheat me out of a portion of the severance package dictated by law. I had to get a lawyer involved and when all was said and done, I ended up with not much more than what the company owed me, but the lawyer walked away with a nice sum ... and the company STILL paid for it all ... so they should have just come clean in the beginning and done the right thing.

I wish you well in your situation and hope that after taking a step back from the situation, you consider your options and come up with a suitable plan to move forward. As others have said, hang in there.

Kurt that's funny because about 10 years ago I created a set of Glasses

Hey Michael, thanks for your update. I was sure you'll get your laptop back, as I said earlier.

As for your which route take dilemma, I think, you are going to take all aspects into consideration. I'm not in your shoes, so I don't know your circumstances.

In such cases, after a thought, I throw up the pros and cons onto a paper, and decide accordingly. Then I ask the opinion of family and staff, if they are infuenced by that decision.

It occurs that - based on their opinion - I change something.

I wish you made the right decision.

I have plenty of ideas, that could DEFINITELY make a lot of money. I'm talking ideas that I wouldn't disclose without a NDA being signed.

I just don't have the money to create an efficient prototype.. I know it could EASILY be done by someone else with the right knowledge and equipment, and its something so simple and brilliant that it would sell like hotcakes on those late-night infomercials.

But again, just don't have the start up costs to produce something on such a large scale like that.
