Exactly. Didn't mean to offend anyone. I see it as careless marketing where the words need to be carefully chosen cause you may ACTUALLY end up offending someone.

I admit they could have worded it better, but they also didn't expect people to take it out of context like that. lol

Even though its kind of comical, it still isnt cool to post on an international forum calling it racist, I bet half the people never would have thought about race until you pointed it out.

People get too upset over that kind of stuff.. I personally dont care, I find it amusing. But I know from experience that somewhere down the road, someone is going to have something negative to say about it.. Its just best to avoid stuff like that.

If there were a listing selling beach accessories and a set of beach blankets were named "Middle Eastern Hats", I don't think you would find that so "curious" or tongue in cheek anecdotal.

When people become brainwashed by political correctness, everything gets nuts. I've seen people scream "racism" because someone was trying to describe someone and used their color as part of the description. WTF? Am I to be ashamed to be called my color now? I'm white - live with it. I'm sure as hell not gonna apoligize for it. Yet it is wrong if you see a criminal in action to say the color of their skin for identifying purposes - age, height, sex, weight, clothes -- but lets go out and hunt down people of three or four different ethnic backgrounds because if we mention that it was a white or hispanic or asian or black looking guy that stole the stuff it's racism - not just a way to narrow down the search, but racism. Christ on a pogo stick.

This crap gets nothing but just ridiculous silly. I'd like to see every person in the world use terms considered racist every time they spoke about ANYONE just to put the politicians off their agenda. What would they do if EVERYONE used something racially identifying every time they talked to someone else? LMAO. Congress would have a freaking stroke while the rest of the world could just quit being so silly, so sensitive, so offended, and so controlled.

HECK YEAH! I didn't even use the term black to describe a waiter because of that. He was the only black waiter there, and I had to describe him. YEAH! I was once stopped by a zealous police officer. I might have been thrown in jail if my car weren't different, and I was mexican. If I were black, I would ALSO have been excluded as a culprit. Innocent people of ALL races get locked up, etc... Why should it be anymore correct to lock up MORE incorrect people? If a black commits a crime, and they are looking for a black, and arrest an innocent black, that is NOT racism. It is an unfortunate MISTAKE! If a WHITE commits a crime, they will be looking for a white, and have JUST as much of a chance of throwing an innocent WHITE in jail.

There is no magic word. We don't know any special hand shake, or special person. We don't even necessarily make more. And there is often NO agency looking out for us. Think about it! There are black judges, lawyers, and police. Would THEY give whites preference just for being white? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! Most whites won't either.

You can't use it as a direct adjective, but it is ok to say "people of color". 8-/ Of course, I never used either of THOSE either. And african american? Should I then call myself russian american? I don't think I can trace my heritage back to russia or asia, but whites are called caucasians because the oldest physical record of their existence is in the Caucasus mountains. WHO KNOWS? Do we REALLY know where anyone originally came from? If a black is 3rd+ generation American, does it matter? I'm sure MOST would prefer it HERE in the USA.

As to African Americans, they are of a race that AGAIN uses a word that basically means black. MAYBE their earliest remains were found around a river in western africa. Do I DARE name that river? After all, add ANOTHER g, right next to another, and you have the n word. OK, OK, the n word has a short i, and the river a long one, but does THAT even count?

Steve pointed out a conundrum that is a direct result of overly sensitive PC attitudes and trying so hard not to "offend" or seem "bigoted".

I've run into this and found it funny. I often have to describe people on occasion in my part time job and I find I'll easily say "tall, white, mustache" or "Asian, hat, long hair" but I run into a wall and find myself saying "heavy, shaved head, blue shirt" when the term "black" should be part of the description. It's odd but I'm very hesitant to use some terms when describing people even when it would be the logical thing to do.

In a casino a black chip is $100 and a purple chip is $500. If one of those hits the table when a new player joins the game, the dealer "calls it" to alert the floorperson to the level of play. I've never had anyone comment when I've called "check change, purple in" but twice when I've called "check change, black in" I've had players say "what the f*** is that about". If people look for racism, they'll find it whether it's there or not.

If the ad said white kids desk or yellow kids desk would anyone think twice about it? Nope.

The fact that the term 'black' to refer to someone black as racist now is ridiculous. People don't go around saying someone is Caucasian. You would say they are white, just as you would say someone is black. I don't know when exactly that joined the new words considered taboo, but it's getting out of control. How p.c. do you have to get? I like how on tv you'll even hear some people say 'black' on say, a news show, but then when they're talking about more sensitive issues they'll say 'African American' in the next sentence as if they somehow woke up and realized what they had previously said. It's like saying that someone is "Mexican" being that I live in Texas. If someone is from Mexico, they are indeed 'Mexican' until they gain citizenship, but somehow that got tainted too as racist because of tone and connotation and intended negative meaning by people of anger. Now it's almost off limits to call some from Mexico a Mexican, but yet you can call someone Puerto Rican, Cuban, or Guatamalan just fine. It's just getting out of control.

I try to be as un-p.c. as possible without crossing the racist or completely insensitive line, but by refusing to have to figure out whether to say Hispanic versus Latino or Native America vs. American Indian (Native American Indian I think would bust the system) and the like. I just use Hispanic, Native American Indian, White, Black, Asian, etc. I don't have a problem describing someone in a courteous manner. I try not to always use what race someone is until I feel that it is necessary, but when I do, I don't feel bad about it. I've got friends of many different races and it's never been a big deal nor has it been a big deal for them as they've told me. It just needs to calm down.

I never claimed to be an archaeologist, etc... I happen to know APPROXIMATELY where they found the bones for whites and asians, but not blacks or others. I never claimed to.

Still, say what you want, it IS interesting! And the info about spelling, sound, and meaning are still the same.

Oh well, you made our case. I said nothing insulting and STILL... I bet they may have had a white or blond kids desk. I bet it is simply because of the program they are using, and the way the info is. It is common. HECK, there is a BROWNIE, of all things, that they call a BLONDIE!

Well HEY, if a car is black, you call it a BLACK CAR, NOT a CAR BLACK! Of course it SHOULD have bee Kid's black computer desk, but the product list probably said desc: Kid's computer desk color: black. The rest is history!

I once went into a store, FEDCO in fact, that sold a "BLACK MAN'S SHAVER"! REALLY! It was a major brand. It even had a picture of a BLACK man shaving, on the pack. And MOST electric shavers are probably colored black, so THAT wasn't the reason! I forget if it was remington or norelco, but believe it was one of the two. I was maybe 7 at the time, and WAS curious! I asked the guy WHAT the difference was!

Want to guess what it was?

He said that black men tend to have coarser hair, and the razor was made more for THAT!

And of course there was that MASH episode where they were up in arms because they got the WRONG drug! The RIGHT one was being rationed, and the wrong one wasn't tolerated well by most blacks. They revealed at the end that it was found that semetic people ALSO didn't tolerate it well. HEY, it WAS factual, even if a series! And there is the house episode that had the black upset because he got a special medicine that was better for blacks!

Somethings are different because the people ARE different. That isn't racist, any more than males having jock straps, and girls having bras is sexist.

BTW for those not knowing about fedco, it was basically a kind of union store. You could only be a member if someone in your family was ever a federal employee, or employed in certain organizations. My mother worked at a hospital, so I was allowed in. So they would have tried to be PC. Of course, it was like a regular store, and race, or racial color, was usually never even mentioned.

There is a scene in a star trek movie. I BELIEVE it is the undiscovered country, but oh well... There is a part where all are sitting down to eat. Humans and various aliens. HEY, NOBODY loves everyone's appearance! EVERYONE hates something about many people! And YES, say what you want, people often tend to prefer the company of someone they have something in common with. SOMETIMES, it strays a bit on race. If they are fair to people of other races and give all an even break, etc... is it REALLY racism? What if it strays to SPECIES?

Well, anyway, in that episode of star trek, the aliens start to accuse the humans of SPECISM! A human says "I'm sorry, I didn't want to alienate you.", and the alien says "LISTEN TO YOURSELF! Even your LANGUAGE is SPECIST!"!

At one point, they even found that Kirk, in a PERSONAL log, said he didn't trust aliens, and spoke of how one had killed his child(IIRC). The FACT is that he cut all a fair brake, and SAVED others. He took RISKS an enemy would not take. So was he REALLY specist? Were the humans more comfortable among their own? SURE! But HECK, his first officer was a VULCAN! And VULCANs weren't that crazy about humans, but THEY helped.

But "Accidental" racism? That's a HOT one! MAYBE if you assume a black is not qualified, and you hire a less able white. MAYBE if you decide to take a whites word as GOSPEL and attack an honest black. But saying the word n-eye-ger(The RIVER Niger River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) wrong, or putting black in front of a word like kid, or using it in a description, is NOT racism. HECK, what about BET? (Black Entertainment TV)!!!!! Is THAT racism? I could say yes, and TL could say yes, but we would see it in totally different ways. HECK, I watch some of the programming on there!
Was that black shaver racist? Is using race to describe a group that can't tolerate, or should get, drugs racist?

It is NOT accidental racism if YOU have decided to become SO hyper sensitive that we can NEVER use a word to describe its color for fear that it may trigger your sensitivities.
That is a mistaken inference on YOUR part.

HEY, NOBODY loves everyone's appearance! EVERYONE hates something about many people! And YES, say what you want, people often tend to prefer the company of someone they have something in common with. SOMETIMES, it strays a bit on race. If they are fair to people of other races and give all an even break, etc... is it REALLY racism? What if it strays to SPECIES?

Well, anyway, in that episode of star trek, the aliens start to accuse the humans of SPECISM! A human says "I'm sorry, I didn't want to alienate you.", and the alien says "LISTEN TO YOURSELF! Even your LANGUAGE is SPECIST!"!

At one point, they even found that Kirk, in a PERSONAL log, said he didn't trust aliens, and spoke of how one had killed his child(IIRC). The FACT is that he cut all a fair brake, and SAVED others. He took RISKS an enemy would not take. So was he REALLY specist? Were the humans more comfortable among their own? SURE! But HECK, his first officer was a VULCAN! And VULCANs weren't that crazy about humans, but THEY helped.

But "Accidental" racism? That's a HOT one! MAYBE if you assume a black is not qualified, and you hire a less able white. MAYBE if you decide to take a whites word as GOSPEL and attack an honest black. But saying the word n-eye-ger(The RIVER Niger River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) wrong, or putting black in front of a word like kid, or using it in a description, is NOT racism. HECK, what about BET? (Black Entertainment TV)!!!!! Is THAT racism? I could say yes, and TL could say yes, but we would see it in totally different ways. HECK, I watch some of the programming on there!
Was that black shaver racist? Is using race to describe a group that can't tolerate, or should get, drugs racist?

It is NOT accidental racism if YOU have decided to become SO hyper sensitive that we can NEVER use a word to describe its color for fear that it may trigger your sensitivities.
That is a mistaken inference on YOUR part.

OK, I jut looked at TLs photos. I can't explain the white power. The KKK was probably unfortunate. Maybe It was Karl Kratchet, and he came out with a brand called Krazy Karl Krachets! The product placements, and town/street names were unfortunate. The "swastika" turns out to be VERY common! It could have been for ANYTHING! As for the bus? If it were a WHITE would you have pointed it out?

BTW did you know that appliances in denmark are called "hvidevare"? And LOOK at what a site I found is named! Billige hrde hvidevarer i god kvalitet. Gratis fragt - WhiteAway.com Do you know WHY white is in the name? "hvidevare" means WHITE WARES! Don't ask me why, but they USED to be WHITE! Maybe homes where painted white inside, and they wanted things to match. WHO KNOWS? Hey, cars used to be BLACK! Was that RACIST? NOPE!

You can call someone anything you want and if you actually like the person you are saying it to - it doesn't mean a damn thing. You can be perfectly PC and if you hate someone being PC doesn't remove hate.

Racial jokes really depend on the intent and how well you know someone.

I had an Italian friend and I'm from German heritage. We'd call each other every ethic slur in the book...And laugh about it. But I'd never call an Italian I didn't know those names.

Also, I had a job as a cook right out of high school. A black friend of mine joked about how the restaurant we worked for was racist because we were using "colored American cheese". I rebutted his comments by tossing him a couple of packets of crackers. Being friends, we could both laugh, but without knowing each other our comments would have been taken completely out of context.

Another example is Lisa Lampanelli, "The Queen of Mean". She says some very derogatory things about many races, but people know her heart is in the right place, so we laugh with her. Carlos Mencia is another that many people think is a racist based on his humor, but he isn't. To me, it's all about the heart and I can handle humor in bad taste as long as the person has a good heart and is just making jokes and has no ill-will.

You have a point. A VERY famous person became famous for putting up a polish joke line. The story goes that the polish consulate asked him to stop. His name? Steve Wozniak! Not only was he bright, respected, and had a good job, and was a major force in starting Apple, but he is POLISH! He shot holes in the polish stereotype, and that is more valuable than getting rid of his jokes.

Yeah, does anyone REALLY care what shade of pale yellow, to kind of orange, cheese is? You have to wonder why they decided to color it. 8-( I thought clear coke was a good idea. 8-( (Because I was simply against another adulterant) For the record, I don't like the idea of phosporic acid either.

I wouldn't even have gotten the cracker reference before that guy on seinfeld(Michael Richards) had his meltdown or whatever you want to call it. And in the middle of his act TOO!

A few years back I was driving down a road in my city and I passed a diner called "White's Diner"

I noticed that in the parking lot there was a sign that said "White's Only" and it took me a little while to put that one together.

I seriously considered I had gone through a time warp until I figured it out.

So lets get really outrageous.

Human skin turned lighter as they moved further North to accommodate manufacturing Vitamin D3 from the sun. Dark skin is more resistant to the sun and it is harder for a dark skinned person to get enough Vitamin D in Northern climates where the sun doesn't shine as much. So if we segregated into latitudes determined by skin color we'd actually all be healthier. So I guess Mom Nature is one bigoted wench.

Kurt - Steve has a very high IQ in mathematics - what that does in the physio/psycho areas of linguistics is make him prone to use associative ideas in conversation - and it also makes him less prone to have the same filing system to follow normal frame/insert constructions in conversations. Unfortunately, his associations are extremely idiosyncratic and isolationist, so he's exceptionally hard to follow sometimes. I know many people with extreme mathematics orientations and they are always a tad hard to follow - usually not quite so idiosyncratic though.

Also -- didn't they just find another human remains that they think is older than all others someplace else? I thought I saw that somewhere but don't remember exactly whether they are still debating it or if they found out otherwise or what.

In the long run I'm not sure it matters what color the first people were or where they came from. Over a long enough time span color will mutate with environment, so if you are really badly bigoted against certain colors - go live where the colors you like are indigenous, and in acouple 10's of thousands of years, if they stay put, your family will probably start being the color you wanted them to be. That adds up to one conclusion: Color of skin is a pretty stupid reason not to like a person. There are so many real reasons that you might not like a person - Why do we have to think up inane reasons that fall apart under scientific scrutiny to do that? Humans are tribal, so they are going to have rifts between "tribes" - but we are also supposed to be thinking, intelligent beings, so we should at least find logical reasons for rifts if they are going to be there.

Yes if you're talking about the same time they found the remains that showed homo sapiens mated with Neanderthals (or whoever).
I remember reading the press release through A.P.. I want to say they found them in either France or Great Britain, but don't quote me on that.

No that's not the one. Human/Neanderthal interbreeding was a lot more recent than that. I'm talking about some remains that predate the previously found remains that were thought to be the oldest actual human remains. I really didn't pay much attention to it and now can't figure out where it was or if they authenticated dates, etc.

I know the oldest actually human settlement that they had found the last time I looked for the info is in western Africa - it's around 200,000 years old. If they have found another older one, I haven't heard of it yet. According to what Kurt is saying, the oldest human remains were not found in the vicinity of the oldest settlement. That's not surprising to me, though.

Archaeology is moving so fast and so much really good science is being discredited by those in power who are jealous of their credentials that it's really hard to keep up with things - even when you talk to the scientists themselves. I'm still wondering about findings in the Grand Canyon and why a friend was threatened so harshly to keep them under wraps. Something very unique or very old that would change history was found there and nobody is being allowed to breath a word of it. Go figure.

I hate it when people pull out the race card. It doesnt matter whether you're black or white, yellow, green, pink, purple or however many colors there are of the rainbow - anybody has the same opportunity as the next person if they work hard at it.

Don't get me wrong, there certainly are hate groups out there who don't like certain races for whatever stupid reason, that's a fact; but I just don't like it when people complain about not getting a job or not becoming wealthy because of their skin color...

I'm a young black guy(Jamaican, Dominican, Indian, English heritage), as you can see in the photo; does that make it harder for me to find a job or become successful? No. At least I don't think so.

Does it mean I should still work extremely hard towards my goals? Yes.

Some would disagree with me though and I would respect their opinion. I cant change their ways nor will I attempt to.

The point is, I wouldnt want any special treatment because of my skin color. I deserve to be treated like every other American.Fair and square. What makes me so awesome that I should be spoon-fed happiness and prosperity?

Racism; It's all about perception. I'd hope most people, in this day and age, could agree with that.

It's stupid how someone can call it "accidental racism" because that's not really how it works.

If JOHN does something that is considered racist to JANE, but JOHN wasn't "perceiving" it as racism/racist, then that would in a sense make JANE racist?

I'm not saying that JANE is racist entirely. I'm just saying if someone calls out someone else on racism, but the one being blamed wasn't even going in that direction, then the one calling out the other person is the one at fault.
