I've been told that I need to relax my brain and watch T.V. from time to time. I usually only watch about an 5 hours of T.V. a week and 4 hours of T.V. is watched while I'm walking on the tread mill.

How much T.V. do you watch?

Who has time for T.V! I might actually watch 0-1 hour a day. This changes if my hockey team is on though of course.

Sometimes I'll watch a good movie or check out some music. Mostly I think "The Idiot Box" is a complete waste of time. On average American's spend 1/4 of their lives watching TV. For me that's just criminal.

Well, we were watching Rupert Bear (The Movie) that has not been filmed yet. These two guys banged on the door and shouted out that we were watching an illegal movie, and that the TV Licencing people had tracked us down. (in the UK you have to buy a TV Licence in order to watch anything)

Well, we were using Time Warp technology, so I said to the guy 'How can it be illegal if the films not made yet?' Our case comes up next Tuesday - they took the TV as evidence so we are watching a soap on the Washing machine.

      T.V.?

What's that. Seriously, I almost never watch television anymore.

I'm too busy getting stressed out over work and supporting my 24 hour a day internet addiction.

But, I guess if I had money and could pay for cable... I might relax every once in a while.

Anybody want to make donations to my cable T.V. fund?

Satelite T.V. would be okay too.

      :p

    I religiously DVR:

    1) Lost
    2) The Mentalist
    3) Burn Notice

    and my new favorite:

    4) True Blood

I watch 'em when I feel like it, usually unwinding at night before I crash.

Other than that, I watch the local news as I eat breakfast and that's about it... ; )

I had a chip put into my TV so I couldn't tune into Faux News,
even by accident. <<< joking I have a TV tuner in one of the PCs
so if I want to I can tune in on the fourth monitor. Mostly there are only
four or five programs a week that I really like. "The Mentalist" "Bones"
"Cold Case" (Kathryn Morris is soooo hot.) and MSNBC.

I do. I like to tap into mass-consciousness.

I watch late-night talk shows and those infomercials.

Recently we've watched the awful "The Biggest Loser"

But understand - the reason is research. By understanding
the way large groups of people use their time and prefer
to be entertained or sold to we gain knowledge which
will allow us to sell to them successfully.

Ugly, but true. TV is a phenomenal research tool.

I watch PBS too, but don't expect to learn much about
      advertising from it.

      @Christie

I find that the occasional movie is relaxing for the brain. A good way to recharge. Other than that I don't watch much TV except when "Heroes" is in season... but I never watch it on TV. I always watch it online. NBC's site rocks. Most of what I watch is news.

It is funny how the news over dramatizes everything. There were over 1 million people at President Obama's inauguration.

How did the news report it?

Millions descended on Washington DC for the inauguration.

To me... millions insinuates 20 or 30 million or way more. 1 or 2 million is not millions... it is a couple million. lmao Reminds me of the South Park spoof of the Hurricane Katrina coverage.

      @ AdiPurush

English TV is great. I used to watch the BBC when I was a kid, and found those English tv show comedies to be quite hilarious.

I rarely watch T.V. I'd prefer to read or listen to music. One of the things I have heard is that sometimes when people are watching T.V. they can reach an Alpha or Theta state which may be why it was suggested to you.

agreed its an idiot box, but I like being an idiot part of the time.

I dvr a few shows so I can watch them at my/our leisure. Mostly scifi.

We have what we call space ship nights - have dinner and sit around and watch BSG, and while it was on Stargate and Stargate Atlantis. I dvr Burn Notice and Dragon's Den but that's about it. I like wasting 44 mins rather than 60.

Here's a pic of us getting ready for spaceship night - we're waiting on another of our group to join us:
    http://www.jacktackett.com/spaceship1.jpg

If the kids get their homework done and have played nice together they get to watch Disney for an hour each night. Otherwise I let me play using their imagination or read to them.

It surprises me how few of my (educated) friends read to their children - or how few book cases they have vs how many TVs....

Thank Gods for the DVR.....and DVDs (I'm re-reading the entire Dune saga so was nice to watch the scifi miniseries again)

I have the t.v. on sometimes while I am working but rarely watch it for anything save the weather on the news. Of course I am consumed with building my business to create a life for my daughter I only dreamed of as a child. I received some advice a couple of months ago that was sound(I still haven't been able to follow it yet). Work a couple of hours and then get away from your computer for 10 minutes. work a couple of hours and get away from your computer for 10 minutes. work half an hour and get away from your computer for 30 minutes. The result is in four and a half hours you will accomplish more than if you sit at your computer constantly. I really do intend to follow this advice, someday. LOL

Actually, I think TV makes your brain even more stressed out. Your body isn't moving, but your mind tries to keep up with everything on the screen... And after you finish watching, you feel like going to bed =)

Basically, TV takes too much time already, why escape from the reality into a fictional reality that's just as stressful, when you can experience reality in ALL of it beautiful and terrible glory?

    Hi Christie!

It's awesome you combine TV watching with doing exercise. I wish I could make that work for me!

Several years ago I was a member of a gym that had positioned its treadmills by a TV that had a 24-hour cable new channel on. I could barely walk about a mile on the treadmill before getting completely sick of the channel. Soon thereafter I stopped going to gyms entirely and now spend an average of 3 to 4 hours a day outside either riding a bike or hiking during the Summer months and between 1 and 2 hours outside doing the same things in the Winter months. I do a lot of push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and use some free weights. Should I be going to a gym? From a health standpoint, I think I'm probably doing okay -- but a gym *does* provide a social component that I sometimes miss.

So how much TV do I watch? There are times I'll watch fascinating shows that really capture my imagination or that I find especially entertaining. I otherwise try and stay away from TV in general and instead push myself to get out and interact with people. I've been behind a computer for many, many years... I think I'm at that point where I'm happy to provide employment opportunities for those who enjoy doing various computer related tasks and just spending more time away from the TV and the computer as a whole. At some level, I could probably just be inside watching TV and being on the computer 24/7. There's a part of me that's okay with that. But there's another part that just yearns be outside and to have a lot of fun socializing with people in a non-virtual environment.

LOL -- That was an oddly long and winding reply to a simple question, wasn't it?! See, this is what I mean... I need to get out more.

2-3 hours per week of TV as such. For the rest, DVDs of all sort of things, and chosen programmes.
OD TV ala hulu.com is a blessing.

I do but not really systematically with some purpose in mind. I do watch news, sports at times or some good movies while having dinner. But no, not regularly for sure.

I usually have it on in the background when I'm working. If it's a show I really like, I will work during the commercials.

I LOVE my TV. You know what they say about all work and no play...

I don't watch a ton of TV, but when I do, I enjoy my VUDU HD movies. Supposedly the largest collection of streaming HD movies anywhere. They have a good collection of documentaries I like to watch.

Last year I got the Xtreamer movie box, for all of my digital movies and I love it. It allows me to put my entire Blu-ray collection onto a hard-drive. And I'll also be first in line for the Boxee movie box

My wife and I canceled our cable a few months ago. We don't miss it. We've realized how much more time we have doing other things -- not to mention the fact that we don't miss any TV shows. Not only do we get to save $60 per month, we actually get more time to spend on more important things.
