To Live Like You Were Dying ... Please Read

I think it is easy to get so caught up in the dreaming and planning for the future that you forget to live in the here and the now. You get so focused on making money that you don't make time for friends and family. You that there will be time for that later when you are rich.

If you have been neglecting your family and friends, I ask that you stop right now and change your priority before life steps and changes it for you.

For days ago I was told that I a very agressive stage 3 cancer. I had mass on my arm that was mis-diagnosed as hematoma and was allowed to grow unchecked for 9 weeks. Finally the pain became too server and the operrated to go in and clean out the hematoma from the muscle in my left arm. They found instead two masses, one hard and one fluid filled. The doctor did not know what it was but decide to cut them out anyway and send it off to the lab.

The result was Leiomyosarcoma. It is a very rare but aggressive and chemo and radiation resistant cancer. The situation was made far worse by the doctors decision to cut it out without knowing what it was or removing it intact along with the surronding tissue.

Now the blood and fluid in the arm from the operation has potentially spread this cancer throughout my entire left arm. The doctors are still running test to see if the cancer has left my arm. If the test show that it is still contained there is about a 90% chance that best way to step it from spreading will be to remove my left arm.

The chemo for sarcoma is the most harsh they have because it is chemo resistant. I will be in the hospital week on and week off for the next 3 to 6 months. The cancer is so rare that there are no stats on survial rate.
I say it is 50/50. You make it or you don't.

I ask that you do not wait until you get this kind of news to start putting your family first.

If you have any recommendations for sources of recurring income to help with expensse while I fight for my life, I would appreaciate if you shared them with me.

I will do whatever they doctors say to stay around as long as possible.
My family and I appreaciate all the prayer and support we have been receiving since we learned of the cancer.

Thank you for taking time to read this and I hope you will make your family your top priority. None of us really nows how much time we have on this earth.

    Hi John,

I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), I'm already an advocate of the thinking you're proposing having had plenty of illness and death in friends and family of my own, so I know the value of what you're saying.

My prayers are with you and your family and I wish you a speedy recovery. Despite your previous experience - medical experts are doing great things now and hopefully can give you the resolution you need.

    Regards,
    Andy

Hi John, thank you for a sobering post. Sadly as you say we all get caught up planning for the future, and forget we have other people who need us as well.

I had my wake up call three years back, after suffering a minor stroke, the scariest thing is that I'd had warning signs, and never really heeded them, this time I had no choice, but I am glad to say I battled back, and now my favorite time is the time I spend with my little girl, yet when she is at school, or in bed, then I work on my business.

    Get well soon John.

      John,

You know, every so often I think about these situations. I get caught up in the moment and like everything else I get distracted by something trivial and unimportant.

One example for me is the story about Troy Davis. Some of you will remember that he was executed in Georgia. There had been recanting by witnesses and other things brought to light that made some people including me to not be so sure that he was guilty of the crime that he had been convicted. I did not say he was innocent, I just thought that the powers that be in the state of Georgia should slow down and re-examine everything. For the first time in my life I emailed and called a governor's office. I discovered that the Governor did not have the authority to stay the execution. I found that the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles did have that authority. I contacted the board by email and phone messages. I went to bed Sept 20, with a last minute appeal being sought. The next morning I watched the news...nothing. I got on Yahoo, I think, to find out that Troy Davis had been executed. The saddest thing for me was that I had to go to Google and Wikipedia to jog my memory just to help me remember his NAME and some of the facts while writing this.

John Hocking, I promise to pray for you and Ken Strong every day for at least the next 30 days. I promise to think good, positive thoughts for both of you and your families.

I encourage anyone reading this thread to do what you can for John and Ken.

I saw the chemo doctor today. There are 145 kinds of Sarcoma. Mine is the most treatable. I will start chemo on Monday. I will ahve 3 21-day cycles (5 days of chemo and 2 weeks of rest) After that they will rescan. I will either get more chemo or surgery at that point to remove any tumors that remain. Doc says with this treatment I will have 90%+ plus chance of living at least 4 years. Thanks for all the prayers and concern. I may loose my hair but there is a good chance I will get to keep my arm now.

I agree with you, I used to spend every waking hour working, it wasn't until I realized my riches came within my own family that I was truly successful.

My family now comes first then my business, I love my business but I love my family even more!

I see people all the time saying I wish I would have spent more time with my wife, or my children, but once it is to late it can never be recovered.

Spend the time now, riches is not everything.. but family is...

Balance your lifestyle, make it a point to work a certain amount of time and be productive, then spend time with the family..

You will then see success come more sweet and more abundantly!

    regards,

I hope all goes well for you. I must say I can't believe no one else has asked after everything people went through to raise money for Ken. Do you have a donation page anywhere? Maybe you could set one up so those who want to offer a little assistance can do so. No one person is more important than the other. I feel we should help everyone out when we can. The last thing you need to be worrying about is how you will pay your bills at a time like this.

I didn't read each thread so I don't know if I am the only one but I am a cancer survivor. So I speak from experience. I have been in remission for 12 years. In Oct 1998 I was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. That too is the aggressive type.

The advice I will give you is to understand the seriousness of the disease but don't dwell on it. Set mini goals and keep the kids/family in the forefront. Don't feel sorry for yourself and go around with the "why me" attitude. Other have it worse. My original goal was to see my son graduate from high school. I made it. Stay positive. Concentrate on the survival % not the other.

I had 11 weeks of intense chemo in 5 months. Lost my hair, got sick, couldn;t keep food down etc. But it worked and it will work for you. You can beat it.

You will be in my prayers.

I have not set up a page yet. The last 2 weeks have been a blur of tests, doctors and emotions.

I start my chemo treatment tomorrow. I will be one off and on as I can over this week of treatment.

I shaved off my beard this morning and plan to go bad later today. I figured it was better to be in control and chose to remove my hair before it fell out in patches and caused a big mess.

I will keep everyone posted as my journy continues.

    Hi John,

I'm very sorry to hear that news. You sound like a
fighter and attitude does play a big part, as does doing
the research and knowing the truth.

As far as an income, I'll PM you with something that
could provide a recurring income for many, many years
to come. Let me know if you want more info on that...
it's an income stream that I've set up for myself, that
is very dependable, and isn't going away any time soon.

I agree with you about living as if you were dying. I
decided to do that 2 years ago, and am doing that.
I'm still a workaholic, but I'll be on a cruise in December,
another one in January, and then on a 30-day vacation
    with my family shortly thereafter.

That all sounds extravagant, but first of all, it's not
really that expensive, and secondly, I did ask myself
    "what am I waiting on!"

I do hope that further testing brings you good new.

I recently lost my uncle to cancer so I wanted to write to you to let you know that you have my support and prayers. Since he passed I have been doing my own research into different cancer treatments and came across information about Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski. Please look at his website below and watch the youtube video about the treatments he uses to cure different kinds of cancers. I wish somebody had shared this info with my uncle but I hope it can help you out in some way. Everybody on this forum should watch the video...it will blow your mind. Good luck to you.

John, first I am so sorry to hear of your cancer diagnosis and second I am happy to hear of the latest news and a 90% chance of survival.

Today my legs are very sore and I am exhausted after walking around an oval for 19 hours on the weekend. I did this for the Australian Cancer Council's Relay for Life event to raise money for cancer. Being exhausted and having sore legs is a small price to pay and one that was so worth it to be able to raise money for the cancer cause and it is minor in comparison to the journey that cancer sufferers go through.

Doing the Relay for Life was an amazing experience to be involved in such a great cause and to hear stories of survival and to remember those we have lost.

I hope you don't have too many side effects from the chemo and I hope that they can kill off any remaining tumor in your body. I will pray for you and your family as you go through this difficult journey, and I will remain positive that you will come out fit and strong and with a whole new attitude on life.

Good luck John, thanks for sharing your story with us and for the reminder that we should cherish every moment with our family and friends.

I know people have rallied together to help out Ken Strong and Kim W and Bev when she was sick. I have to agree with WillR that I'm a bit surprised that no-one has said anything about a donation page or if there is anything we can do to help John out through his journey.

I totally agree - what a horrible thing to do to someone who has already been struck by cancer. Kwanchen - If you don't like the thread then say nothing at all. In the midst of such tragedy a little compassion goes a long long way.

      John

Please keep strong and positive. My mum was given two years at a stretch back in 1996 when she was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. Despite her death sentence, she refused to give up hope and battled for 13 years to live her life. She never referred to herself once as a cancer victim but as a cancer survivor. We had ten plus years with her as a result of her positive attitude.

So keep strong, keep fighting and let us know if we can do anything.

      Hi, John -

What a hand you've been dealt, hunh? I've read most of the posts in this thread, and there are enough gifts of prayer here to raise the dead! I'm adding my own prayers to those already posted. Just let me remind you, God is the One Who can make a way when there seems to be NO way! And who in all creation is better equipped to mend His creation, than the Creator Himself? Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead - He paid for YOUR healing and life on the cross. Hang in there John, and trust regardless of feeling. Just choose to believe, and trust.

Also, I watched that video that was included about Dr. Brizinski (sorry ... I think I spelled it incorrectly) - WOW. If you haven't watched it yet, watch it now!

      God bless,

I survived the first week of treatment... barely. I surprized to doctors by how sick I was. I got almost every side effect plus some they had not seen before. I have been very sick since last monday when it started. I have lost over 20 pounds already this week.

I guess soon I will be as transformed on the outside as I have been on the inside.

Work has decide to put me on medical leave and reserve my job when I can come back but will stop paying my insurance at the end of the year.

    Hi John

If its any consolation, I'm a survivor of Leiomyosarcoma! So it does happen.
It was the most aggressive possible (grade 4). It took the form of a 9cm tumour in my kidney (unusual because leiomyosarcoma is a muscle cancer).

Anyway the good news is that you should remain optimistic no matter what you read. I was told ...80% chance of recurrence within a year, and here I am 6 years later still ok. Also I didn't have chemo as my other kidney was a bit under par, so with your most recent prognosis and treatment, stay optimistic. Reading your post I've no doubt you will! .

PM me if you'd like to discuss

    All the best for you
    Bobby

      John,

Regret to hear difficulties on which you and your family have to go through.

Your touching story stops all of us for a moment. Indeed, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, people tend to care less about things (family, joy, recreation, etc.) that yet don't can be purchased with money.

Thoughts and prayers are with you. With strong determination you'll be healthy again. Believe!

      Wishing you endurance,

      Sandor

    John Hocking... read this.

Get and read cover to cover the book: A Cancer Battle Plan by Anne Frahm

This will be your starting point. Contact me at chris_cz2004atyahoo.com if you want to know more.

A close friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It had invaded the stomach and colon, and was also affecting the liver and spleen (doctors wouldn't say how bad liver and spleen were "affected" so we don't know) but at one point 3 doctors told her she had a month to live.

She's now completely cancer-free and living a great life. We started with this book. If it resonates with you, let's talk.

    Best wishes,
    Chris

Hi John, I just wanted to first say that your posts and the overall sentiments you expressed were truly inspiring. I am also happy to see that you got past your 1st week of treatment although I can only imagine how hard it must have been.

Having had both my parents go through different forms of Cancer I can truly appreciate how difficult this time must be both for you and your loved ones. As with the posts above the best thing I can only suggest is that you keep your mind and heart as positive as possible, I know its easier said than done but I am sure with the help and support of your family and friends including here on the Warrior forum you will fight the good fight.

I wish you and your family all the best and if there is any thing at all that I can personally do to help do not hesitate to PM me. I wanted to leave you with a quote that helped me come to terms with my parents illness at the time and perhaps it will help you too, its by Lance Armstrong:

"If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell."

Sorry for my absense. I just got home from two days in the hospital.

I have a bad heart as well. I have had issues with Atrial fibrillation since i was 12 years old. Well my body being beat down from the chemo decided it would be a good idea to throw the heart issue into the mix Tuesday night.

I had ate solid food but got the hiccups (strange side effect I have been having) and got sick. The contractions caused my heart to go into Atrial fibrillation. By the time I made to the ER my pulse was over 180. The last two times this happend I had to be electro converted back to normal.

Well the ER tried this 2 times. Once at a setting of 50 and then again at 150 (3 times normal recommend levels) but I did not convert. This is the first time it did not work and I have to suppect it was because of how weak the chemop had made me.

I got admited and they tried medicine drips. Nothing worked. Normally when laying down the pulse would slow but this time it did not. I was really starting to worry. I mean It was not following the patterns I had known for 30 years. There was a lot of debate with the cardo doctors as to what to try next.

I got up to go to bathroom and my heart rate soared so much that they came in and immediately doubled my meds rate of infusion. I was not sure how much longer my body could take this rapid unstable heart rate.

My wife came back from the cafateria and offered me some mini tacos. Now you should know that tacos or mexican food is my favoriate and I had not had any in a few weeks. I was unsure if it would make me sick but I decided what did I have to loose. They tasted so good to me.

The heart doctor I had been waiting on had walked in the door about 5 mins later. I started asking him what the plan was going to be to get my heart rate back to normal and he said it was normal sinus now. He verified with a personal exam on my body and plus. I was back to normal with a pulse of 80. My family joked that all I need was some tacos and I should keep them in the freezer for emergencies like this.

I am not sure if it was the taco, the increased meds or just taking my mind off the situation for a moment but there was great celebration that it had finally worked.

They decided to keep me another night to make sure I could maintain normal rythym. Good news is I did. Bad news is my wife came down with her kids soar throat and fever. She left my side to find a hotel so she would not risk getting me sick.

The blood work this morning showed that the chemo has almost complete removed my white blood cells and platelets. Now I have to take extreme precausions to be around my wife and two sick kids.

I am home and feeling normal for the first time in over a week. I just have monitor for signs of infection or fever as they can be life treatening right now.

My grandma used to tell me that God never gave you more then you can handle. Sometimes I wish he did not trust me so much.

Thanks for all the continued prayers for me and my family. I will keep you updated as I am able.

Better health to you soon mate.

When I was 19 y.o. I nearly died after getting my wisdom teeth pulled. I reacted to the adrenalin (from antithetic) and my body and heart went haywire. Was rushed to hospital, and I do not remember much. Was a very bad experience, and I thought my body would just shut down and give up on me.

Scared my mum, dad and friends, and I thought I was a goner. I do not know how I survived. ANd the people in hospital were just stunned.

I can say that experience changed my whole out look on life and now I think about it, was a like an ephiphany and sort out what I wanted to do in life. Do not take life for granted and live like it is your last day here. That is what I say. Leave something on this earth that others can remember you by.

I'm in a dark room, my father is sleeping. I'm here with him two nights a week so my mother can get some rest. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 glioblastoma, they estimated 3-4 months, that was 3 years ago. More recently they've said 3-4 weeks, but that was 2 months ago.

He beat the first tumor, in his brain, too deep to operate on. This might sound dark but in a sense you're lucky it's your arm. Western doctors choose to limit cancer fighting to cutting, burning, or poisoning. Cutting was never an option for us. You have that choice. Remember that you have that choice, please.

We were told brain tumors do not spread. What the doctors meant was that brain tumors do not spread to the body, but they can spread throughout the central nervous system. It is now in my father's back. We saw signs but were not concerned, and waited too long to get him to the hospital, thinking his slow walking pace was merely age and too many rounds of chemo and radiation catching up with him.

You're going to hear from a lot of people who's uncle's-brother's-dog's-walker's-neighbour's-sister-had-cancer-so-i-know-what-you're-going-through. They don't know what you're going through. They're going to tell you you'll fight through this. You can. But please don't forget you have an option that we don't. If my father could lose an arm to know he'd live a long and healthy life he'd be in bed yelling for me to grab a saw, instead of asleep and paralyzed from the waist down.

An arm is a drop in the ocean of a life. After what I've seen with my father in these last few years of hell, I wouldn't gamble an arm on a life, but I wish you luck with your treatments all the same of course. Have good health and stay strong. Thanks for bringing this to other people's attention. Hope they'll take your advice.

Looks the treatment is causing issues with my heart. I ended up back in the hospital last sunday in A Fib again. This time they did not even try to shock me. I has to wait until the IV fluids helped me convert back.

The last two days I had issues going to the bathroom. I could not get the muscles to release and let it open.

I went to the ER in great pain last night. CT Scans revealed an unknown mass about 2 in by 1.5 in near my prostate and partially obstructing my rectum.

I have to go into today to get it scoped and biopcied. If my cancer has indeed took root there it could be a major problem. The turmor they removed from my arm went the size of finder nail to the size of chcken egg in a week.

The ct scan from 3 weeks ago did not show the mass so this one is already at 2 in in that time.

My guess that they will have to halt chemo and remove this mass intact asap.

While I was waiting in the ER last night we noticed that my hair has finally started to fall out.

This is going to be an interesting Christmas.

I am not sure what today holds for me but I will update you when I can.

Thanks again for the all the prayers and support.

Had Surgery today to remove the unknown mass. It was actually a really large infected abscess that had grown overnight to larger then a chicken egg.

I am releaved to know that is all it was and happy I don't have to deal with that pain anymore.

I am hoping to wake up tomorrow to a day without any more surprizes.

It has been a long and difficult process fighting this cancer.

The chemo side effects were very severe. I had to have two emegency surgeries to remove internal infections cause by chemo lowering my immune system. The doctors ending up cancelling my 3rd round of chemo because of the harm and complications I was having with it.

In the end, it looks like the chemo worked. There are no signs that the cancer spread. I had a follow up arm surgery to remove the arm around the orginal tumor. They removed the muscle it was in. The good news is I still have full use of the arm and there is no sign of cancer anymore.

This is a far cry from the orginal talk of amputation.

I thank GOD and everyone that has been praying for me and my family.

      We appraciate it all.

John, I didn't see this thread until today. Quite a journey you've had the past few months! Thank you so much for sharing it here. So very glad to hear that the chemo worked, you still have your arm (and full use of it!), and no more signs of cancer! I can only imagine the relief and gratitude you are feeling!

I lost my older sister to a very aggressive type of leukemia just over a year ago, despite months of grueling treatment including a bone marrow transplant. My other 3 siblings and I have made it a point to stay in better touch with each other as a result of her illness and death.

Sadly, it's human nature to take life (and time) for granted; thank you for the poignant reminder that that is a luxury none of us really has.

Often these horrific cases can be blessings in disguise and I hope that you take this blessing to heart and turn to Allah for help and guidence.

Hi John, I was amazed when I read your post. My grandma had exactly the same cancer as you, Leiomyosarcoma. It is an extremely rare cancer, we used to joke that she was a "rarity" ( yes that's how cool she was, she used to joke about her own cancer ), anyway she went through with chemo, and I remember the doctors were talking about 60/40 cure rate.

The main thing John with cancer, is to stay positive, I know it's the last thing to say and I don't really know what it's like. But I remember my nan would say F*ck cancer, it's not going to rule my life.
When the doctors gave her 2 weeks, she fought and carried on a normal(ish) life for 2 years.
Anyways, good luck with chemo mate, I really hope everything goes allright!

Started the radiation treamtments for the arm today.

I get to drive a hour into the hospital for a 7:15 treatment 5 days a week for the next 6 weeks.

It felt like a bad sunburn at first but it gets better. I will say that the treatment room is one of the most high tech rooms I have ever been in.

The whole time I am laying on the machine, there are lasers targeting me and the maching spinning around me. I keep thinking back to the old Incredible Hulk tv series. I hope I don't turn into a big green monster from all of this radiation. I would cost me a fortune in new pants.

Fantastic to hear that there is no sign of cancer anywhere else and that you didn't lose your arm. Hopefully when the radiation treatment is finished you will get the all clear.

That is one mighty long wound on your arm - you know that scars add character right! I'm thinking the Hulk rather than Shrek - unless you are just a big softy at heart then it might need to be Shrek!

To Live Like You Were Dying is exactly how I have spent the last five years of my life.
When you are told you have an serious illness your whole perspective changes.
And,to get to the basics, you have two choices, to let it beat you or for you to beat it.

It looks like your making the same choice I did, which is to beat it. And from what I've read in this thread,it is a treatable/beatable form of cancer.
I am a cancer survivor. Stay positive.
Someone earlier in this thread,I'm not going to go bac and look up who it was, said you need an advocate. There is no better advocate for you than yourself. Don't be afraid to ask questions, don't take everything the Drs,no matter how much you like and trust them, tell you at face value.
I wish you the best and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

    Wow. What a story!

I just read the whole thread for the first time - started out so dire, then started to have some hope, and ended up in victory! I am very very happy for you and hope that you continue to improve every day... Someday this nightmare will get to be just a distant memory.

God bless you -you are a good testament to strength, courage and OVERCOMING adversity!

(i just can't believe what a rube the first doctor was - nothing like compounding wrong with worse - but then again, thank God he was wrong and hopefully he learned something.)
