Fiverr. The home of Scammers, Spammers, and Mults.

<begin rant>

I recently ordered a backlink gig on Fiverr. Admittadly, I didn't look into the fine details of the ad, but it promised 100 backlinks from EDU sites, and had hundreds of positive feedback comments.

The delivered work, was a text file, containing a bunch of URLs, which led to blog pages (all "nofollow") that had been absolutely blitzed with spam already.
Clearly, most of the process had been automated with spammer software.

I decided to leave negative feedback. The seller ("backlinkmania") then completely withdrew that particular gig. A few days later, I was messaged by the same guy with the whole:
"I saw that u were looking for High Page Rank .EDU Back Links !... what about my gig..."
Presumably he had accidentally left me on his sucker list.

I hate unsolicited messages on Fiverr, and it was clear that this guy was up to no good. I reported the him to Fiverr support, who emailed me 24 hours later saying they took reports of abuse "very seriously"...

Fair enough, I thought...

..... A week later, the original gig is back up, and my negative feedback is nowhere to be seen, not when backlinkmania has had a whole page of "positive feedback" from his OBVIOUS MULTS, in the last 24 hours.

As if that wasn't sickening enough, low and behold, I recieved ANOTHER unsolicited message, from a DIFFERENT ID ("edumaniac"), with the same text ..... "I saw that u were looking for High Page Rank .EDU Back Links !" etc etc etc ...

So let me make this very clear to everyone reading all these great things about outsourcing on Fiverr:

1
There are people on Fiverr with fake feedback, promising everything, and delivering nothing. Take the "latest buyers feedback" with a huge pinch of salt.

2
Spammy backlinks can DAMAGE your SEO. Be descerning about ordering backlink & SEO services (more descerning than I was!)
An ad or text link on a busy blog or site would be much better than 100 crappy spam links on a load of non-sites.

3
Fiverr make money from commissions, so they don't want to IP ban users. They do however want to have a good reputation. It is clear this conflict of interests is being exploited by the scammer mults.

4
Fiverr are not doing enough to rid the site of scammers with multiple accounts. Nor do they have enough of a flagging system in place, both automated, and from users. Please let them know.

5
Apparently if you leave negative feedback, a seller can simply cancel the gig and refund you, without suffering negative feedback. This is unacceptable.

6
I still love Fiverr, and I think it is in all of our interests that it remains a good place to outsource, and not a hornets nest of scammers, spammers, and mults. I would strongly urge people to report anyone they feel is up to no good on Fiverr.

Like I said, the gig had lots of positive comments. I suspect they are a mixture of duplicate accounts, and people who simply dont know any better, and are just thrilled when they get a text file with 100 URLs.

onegoodman, thanks for your reply. You missed a great opportunity to plug your own site there. Do you have these sort of scammers on "Fivers World" ?(first Ive heard of your site to be honest) Would you agree that Fiverr could do more to discourage multiple accounts, and encourage fair play.

I am sorry not sure what you meant by 'great opportunity to plug your own site there' ?

As far as scammers, I am sure they are everywhere, there is no website today that are not having such an issue (they follow the money )

For me I keep getting my Term Of Service and the website security more tight to protect the website as well as members on the website.

This is because when I get a complaint majority point their fingers to the website as if we are the seller, we got the blame before the seller does.

on my website if someone get himself successfully banned, can't sign up again.

The bottom lines you can never cut scammers or spammers from a website, but you can always reduce them to minimum, simply because new ones always come along

        cheers

Sorry about that seller, but there are a lot of these people. They would follow "The Money".

As far as feedback I saw many sellers with unrealistic "POSITIVE FEEDBACK" from the same buyer ? Really one buyer bought one gig over 500 times ?

I guess there is some type of scam scripts they using.

I wouldn't say everyone but certainly many are. Others just got buyers who don't know what they are buying.

All I can say simply before buy any gig contact the seller and take as much information as you can.

After all with two or three messages, you certainly can tell if this guy knows what he is selling on just another spammer.

Many people are n't expert in SEO and just pay thinking that will get them first page. This is why it is normal to find a lot of positive feedback for a service that sucks.

What I usually do, is I check the negative feedback only I am serious because I can tell it is negative because seller sucks or just some unfair negative feedbacks

Fiverr hasn't cornered the market scammers. They are everywhere money can be made. There was a post recently about how Flippa is full of scammers. eBay and craigslist have more than their share also.

The only thing we can do is read the reviews and hope they are honest, but as we all know those can be scammed also. It's just a hazard of doing business on the internet, but there are plenty of scammers off the internet as well.

      Hey Ace.
That is a fair point, and it is probably unfair that I described Fiverr as "the home" of scammers and spammers. It is certainly a healthy breeding ground though.

I have to disagree with you there. I think complacency encourages this sort of behaviour.

As a hack programmer and something of a consumer advocate, I know Fiverr can do more to make the feedback system more realistic, and make the whole process WAY more customer-centric.

      Hey jamesrich1
I have had a lot of good experiences with Fiverr, both as a buyer and as a seller. There is a lot to love about Fiverr.

      Update:
I just recieved an email from Max@Fiverr, who assures me, for the second time, that they take reports of abuse seriously, but that these things can "take a lot of time to look into"...

Fiverr has been amazing for me. I don't buy backlink packages, but the social bookmarking has done wonders for my SEO & @ $5 it's more than worth it. You really have to read the reviews, and that means searching for the negative reviews and really analyzing them to see if the seller was wrong or if the buyer was just being a pain. If someone has 200 positives and 5 negatives that all allude to the same problem, then I probably would stay away from them even though their feedback looked great.

Again, really take time to look at the comments left by others.

Thanks for the reply but like I said, this Fiverrer clearly has an intricate system in place where negative feedback is either removed by cancelling the gig, or by flooding the page with positive feedback.

Once he cancelled the gig and refunded me, my negative feedback was removed!

Also, the seller has mults giving fake positive feedback, and I suspect he can move on to new seller accounts if there's too much heat.

What Im saying is, until the system is made more robust, feedback doesn't matter a damn on Fiverr.

This is a good point. 100 edu backlinks for $5 doesn't sound credible. There has to be a catch somewhere.

One person cannot ruin the reputation of the whole website. I have nothing but good experiences ordering from people on Fiverr. I only use top rated sellers. Even if I was taken advantage of I would not bash Fiverr only be disgusted with that particular seller. I will always like Fiverr because you can get some high quality work for super cheap if you find the right person.

Obviously that is horrible that immoral gigs can go unpunished like that but I just look at it as a risk/reward type of thing.

To be honest, I usually don't expect much when I order something from fiverr. If it works out then that's great. If not, I just chalk it up to the cost of searching for inexpensive services. Generally by using the "top rated" filter I can find decent work if I look hard enough.

Yeah, I've admitted that it was a fairly obviously crappy gig to be ordering, but I was blinded by the positive feedback.

While I'm on the subject though, I might as well mention the two sorts of Fiverr gigs that have genuinely boosted traffic and been good value:

      1
Mass Stumbles. Stumbleupon is brilliant. I've seen Stumbleupon gigs come and go. If you can find someone with a couple of thousand followers, it's well worth a fiver to get them to stumble your site, especially if it's something novel or funny. (also helps if you have social media share buttons on your site)

      2
Ads. There are people on Fiverr selling dirt cheap adspace on VERY busy websites.

Admittedly, there are scammers on Fiverr, but that is not the majority, at least from my experience. I have purchased a number of of gigs and been pleased with most of them. Like every other service I use in building and maintaining my business, I find some "bad apples." So I have to check, not to eliminate them all, but to minimize my losses. That is also true on Fiverr. So I always check references and go with people who have completed a number of gigs with favorable reviews. Even so, I still get burned once in a while. I see it as one of the costs of doing business.

It smarts, but not enough to make me quit using sites like Fiverr.

A mult is a multiple accound user. So for example, I could set up another account, or ten, or 100..... and give myself lots of positive reviews on a community website.

I'm sure there are plenty of mults on Warrior Forum too. On Digital Point, they try to discourage mults by giving everyone pseudo IP addresses. Not sure what they do here, if anything, but multing was never my style, apart from on Twitter, where it is almost expected.

Yes it can be a difficult situation to overcome, I have ordered a lot of gigs on fiverr and at first I ended up, with less than perfect results, and to be honest I am not at all sure that backlinks really work all that well in the first place, of all the gigs that I have ordered, the promotion and backlinking gigs never really panned out, so I went into other areas that offered a better ROI.

Over all I get a decent value for most of the gigs I order, not all, but most of them and that is about all you can hope to get.

And as others have said here, communication is probably one of the most important things you can do in developing a relationship with sellers.

I would say to use some "common sense" before taking up those gigs.

Just imagine yourself - could you deliver 100 quality EDU backlinks for just $5 (actually seller gets $3.92). Whenever I saw such Gigs, I knew they are using some software for delivering those and it will harm your SEO progress. Always look for more decent gigs. For example 5 EDU backlinks for $5 is more reasonable.

When searching for gigs, drill down the results by popularity and/or rating to find good bets especially when starting out and always take the time to check ratings and feedback.Well...I’m pretty sure many sellers set up their own feedback or have friends provide some ratings to gain immediate proof. This is why you should look for sellers with substantial ratings that look and feel legitimate. I’m not saying you should ignore sellers with zero or very few ratings. If you find someone offering an interesting gig with no feedback, they just might be new.
Scammers are everywhere unfortunately...but don't let that ruin honest quality workers on the site...

After getting my fingers burnt a couple of times buying a couple of backlink scams from fiverr and other similar sites, I now always engage in multiple conversations with those I am interested in and have purchased. I have purchased some brilliant gigs that have got me good results. It's so sad that the reputation of what is a good site for buying and selling is marred by a number of crooks!

You do have to use some common sense like you cannot purchase 50 top quality EDU backlinks for $5 - that's madness. You can on the other hand buy just one good quality link on a reputable site for $5 and would be worth 100 times the EDU links.

If I see a gig which offers a backlink on a authoritative site, I will first ask the seller for the URL of the site. I will then go and prove the site has the authoritative qualities required to obtain a good backlink. Then I purchase. Then when the gig is complete I will double check where the link is placed and ping it to get the Search Engines to Index it. I then go and check at intervals to make sure it is still live. I tell the seller prior to purchase that I will be checking as well.

    Best regards,
    Koolsteve

It would be great if Fiverr Gigs had a little FAQ section, where the seller can answer any concerns from potential buyers, a bit like on eBay.

I'm sure Fiverr will refine their site over time. They pretty much have to. There are a number of copycat sites out there already.

backlinkmania spammed me as well, I reported him, and he's still an active Fiverr user.

I would really like to think that Fiverr hasn't given him carte blanche and that he's not really allowed to break the rules with impunity but at this point you have to wonder.

If multiple reports of spamming (which is easily proven, he uses their message system) doesn't get him booted, what will?

Whereas I contacted nine sellers on the same day to invite them to do a gig for me and my message privileges were suspended. That's not right.

  • Fiverr is a free market like many others. I'm always sorry to hear bad feedbacks by users, but this depends on your experience only.
I never got scammed or stealed on Fiverr, but I will never use SEO on Fiverr in my entire life. How can $4 pay an entire SEO strategy? It's obvious.

People offering 5000 backlinks for $5 will shoot your link in every place, good and bad, without caring for their submission and using automated tools like Scrapebox, Xrumer and so on. This is not valuable at all.
It's normal, $4 it's a small income, and you can't expect a top quality job with manual submission.

Use Fiverr for simple tasks, like I always did, and all will be fine.
    See you soon,
    Alessandro

Why would you want to gamble with your money site on $4 backlinking? If you were to be doing backlinking, you should know how tedious and boring this is. 30k backlink with 200 good feedback (just an example)? Does it make sense? You should know who these people are and where are they from.

So, be extra careful when ordering gigs from fiverr.

LOL .... I remember seeing a fiverr gig of someone selling an ebook showing you how to get your website to a PageRank of 5 (PR5) within ONE month!

I messaged the seller asking how this was possible, and if the PR is faked or if it would be geniune... they replied saying they have a secret formula that always works which involves placing links on various websites in a 'specific' way - and that the PR is genuine....

I messaged them back saying that Google only updates PR once every 3-4 months so how can he claim to get the PR changed within ONE month?

He replied saying it had nothing to do with Google PR update and that it was possible to change a sites PR before a Google PR update..

... Again as many people have said in this thread ..... IF IT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS!!!!!!!

    Cheers ....

So, where's the scam? He did the work, regardless of how he did it, he got the work done that you paid for. Or did he not deliver on the 100 .edu backlinks? Or are you mad that he used automated software took him 2-3 minutes to do it? Or are you mad that your backlink was not the only one on the pages? I don't see the scam. Leaving aside the tons of positive feedback, did he oor did he not do the work described in the gig, deliver 100 .edu backlinks?

      Hi Sleaklight, hi Joe.

I didn't say I was scammed, nor did I ask Fiverr for my money back. I certainly wasn't looking for sympathy, and I hope I didn't give that impression

My concern is that a seller on Fiverr can so easily set up multiple accounts, give himself positive feedback, and avoid negative feedback by cancelling an order which recieves negative feedback. This all violates Fiverrs TOS, yet clearly happens regularly.

I also raised concerns about the ability of Fiverrers (Fiverrers?) to send unlimited unsolicited messages to multiple users.

I think this thread has ran its course at this point TBH.

Sorry to be harsh but buyer beware. You were not scammed. The gig probably either didn't describe fully what was being sold, or you didn't read carefully. You ordered 100 links, you got 100 links -- NO SCAM.

It sounds like he delivered exactly what he promised.

The fact that .edu links are no better than others is not his problem - he's playing on the fact that you don't know any better.

The fact that they've been spammed to death - not his problem. The other links are probably also from when he's spammed them for other customers. If he didn't say that wouldn't happen - that's your problem not his.

If you only want to spend $5 to get links then you get what you paid for.

I you leave bad feedback because you don't like the way he delivered what he promised is bad. You should read the offer before buying stuff from random strangers online, especially when it's such a lame practice as trying to leech value from other people's websites.

You have to ask alot of questions first and find out the finer details before ordering, and hey if you got your money back I guess its no big loss.

Its going to get worse with alot of the automated Fiver systems coming out, fiverr spam is going to go through the roof.

    </rant>
I went there for some help, and checked reviews, but still contacted a few people who couldn't: tell you how many people would buy/subscribe to your program; couldn't help you at all or wouldn't tell you exactly what type of program their members would go for! It seems some of these people just build lists of 'anybody' and make it appear like you can actually get sales or signups. I got fed up and stopped asking people.

I'm one of those people who has both bought and sold gigs on Fiverr and I've certainly run into my share of problems on both sides of the deal. In fact, most of the negative feedback I received were cases where I had to shut down the order because nothing I did was good enough for the buyer. It's all a matter of, "What do you expect for a lousy five bucks?"

I have tried about 10 fiverr gigs.
ALL of them delivered what they promised.
BUT most of the links I tried were no better or worse then any other cheap linking method. And $5 is cheap.
On a positive note I paid a guy $5 to sing "you are my sunshine" to my wife as a surprise over the phone and she loved it. He was very good.
And I paid for a few other things (like a hollowed out book safe for $5) that were great deals..

the problem is Fiverr - Hire people to do things for $5, they actually support these crimes, and they don,t do nothing about it. i couldn,t find any CONTACT US link on their website and you don,t know where to complaint to. fiverr.com is crook and majority people who sell those software are violation on copyright law , I noticed one seller was selling whishlist membership software for $5, i remember i purchased this software from original company for over $197 . I just don,t know how fiverr.com can get away from these crimes.

Looks to me like what I saw as the primary problem with SOPA. It's expecting large sites like Fiverr, Youtube and Facebook to police each and every listing, video and status update before it's noticed by a third party. They'd have a hard time making a profit if they had to hire the staff to do that. Which is pretty much where report buttons come in handy. The contact button for Fiverr is there; just scroll to the bottom, click on "Customer Support" and click on the link under "Contact Help Desk." Be sure to copy the URL of that listing you noticed so the Fiverr people can take a look at it.

Just found this great thread. Thanks everyone who has posted in it and condra for starting it.

With the Panda Google updates, Google is now doing its best to punish webpages that purchase backlinks or use spammy backlinking or auto backlinking processes. So, great though fiverr is, I'd be very wary of using them to purchase backlinking.

Fiverr's a great opportunity, though, to buy a few related gigs and thereby perhaps find responsible people whom you might like to pay a bit more for genuine backlinking work. Has anyone done this? And I'm curious to know if anyone here has outsourced backlinking via an agency?

When this happens, it's usually best to let it go and move on straight away. You don't wanna be spending too much time resolving something you paid $5 for. Your time is worth more than that. I've bought a crappy gig before. I left negative feedback and left it at that. Didn't really wanna waste time jumping through hoops to get my $5 back or get the guy banned.

my first post... hi all. I recently purchased backlinks from some guy on fiverr and I found links to child porn sites in the list. I took off the end of the url and found the site to be for a company in England who obviously dont know that their phpbb forum has been exploited and filled with these links to seriously bad sites.

Im posting to warn people about the fiverr thing.. its not good.

When Ebay sold pirate movies by the bulk I wondered how the hel lthey could get away with it. Looks like it has been stopepd now.

I suspect with sites like Fiverr...when that comes in they'll simly fold up. Bank the cash and move on.

People need to understand that you get what you pay for. If you want excellence, you need to spring for it. Fivrr has some really unique and funny items, but you don't get professional services for pennies any more than you get Prada at a K-mart blue light special.
