Remember the scene in Falling Down?
Someone had posted a short clip awhile back...I posted the short clip underneath...in case you forgot the movie.

What Micheal Douglas was complaining about has po'd me since I was young, long before the movie...but I have never actually seen the comparison, quite like this. And these (the real ones) are made to look as good as possible...
We must rise up...and fall down...lol

Just for the by the by...
One of the reasons I first watched this movie...was it was partially filmed where I grew up...the reason the lots are vacant, is years ago they were going to expand downtown (in the background).

They (developers) bought up all those houses, knocked them down...then left them like that for years...idiots.

The neighborhood was/is known as Diamond St. It was also featured in Colors. Close to Echo Park. My house was about 1/2 mile from this scene.

    Hey Jim...

Know how you feel...I suggest going to Fatburger and get yourself a couple of cheeseburgers and a chocolate shake. Fatburger will make you forget about those shriveled up burger-like products from the other guys.

I have yet to find one in San Diego..

        And yeah...Fatburger is a MAN's burger. LOL

Didn't Big George buy a Fatburger franchise or two?

Your making me hungry Kurt...Yea there is one In-N-Out within reasonable reach here, in National City...I really like them too.

One thing I really miss about LA, is I knew just about every hole in the wall, good place to eat. Not to mention the national chains that they don't have down here..I think we went down this road before, about better Mexican food in LA.

I'm not sure how going postal will get me a good burger...but I'll take your word for it...

And yes I believe big George did own a few franchises...I know he used to do commercials for them.

Jim...Jim...Jim...You only go postal if you DON'T get a good burger. It doesn't help you get a good one, only helps relieve the frustration when you get a bad one. In a pinch, In and Out will do.

I hear you about knowing the great places to eat...Growing up in Denver there was a local chain called Rocky Built Burgers that was great, but they went out of business long ago.

Yea there's nothing like what you grow up with to eat.

Reminds me of Howie Long, he once said that he went on a real healthy diet, natural foods, etc... His stats went down...he went back to eating what he always did.

He said afterward that if you grow up eating Twinkies and burgers...you need to eat Twinkies and burgers...made me laugh, because it's kind of true.

The ironic thing is that this movie is often ridiculed as being a racist movie, etc... They don't even mention a point where he goes to a surplus shop, which turns out to be run by a "neo nazi", and the store clerk(neo nazi) reveals his true nature, thinking that the protagonist is a fellow racist nazi type. Well, he makes it clear to the clerk that he is against that stuff.

He is just someone in a hurry to get to his daughter's birthday party(as I recall), and it seems almost as if everything is conspiring against him and he flips out. If we never got rid of the industry we did, and got rid of the illegal aliens, 2008 wouldn't have happened and EVERYONE here would have been better off. Maybe those hamburgers would even look better. REAL wages would have been higher also! I say REAL wages because the average person would make less, but the buying power would be better.

Not to start an argument, etc... BUT:

One of the reasons I liked that movie so much was...well, who hasn't felt like that?

The original reason he went off, was because he was sitting in L.A. traffic...when I decided to move and just couldn't take the hour and a half to two hour commutes any more...I was sitting in traffic on a Friday.

That shop that he went into really was an Army/Navy surplus shop (not run by racists, by the way..lol) . It's on Sunset about a mile before Hollywood, (coming from downtown). I have been in there quite a few times...long before the military. I liked the surplus stuff.

For the record, I didn't mean it was in REAL life. I've gone to some surplus shops, and maybe even THAT one, and never even noticed weapons. There is a lot of stuff that could be used for camping, etc...

And yeah, I was going to mention him even abandoning his car, because I believe he did. It HAS been a LONG time since I have seen it.

I was on the ventura freeway one time when the average speed of the freeway was 0.000000MPH for HOURS! One motorcycle rider was actually nice enough to go up and come back, and he said some huge truck jacknifed and left a mess, and they were trying to clean it up. I was also on the ventura HIGHWAY(coincidence) one night when it was raining and someone opened the floodgates and flooded out the area that included that highway from like encino to sherman oaks, AT LEAST. That slowed down traffic a LOT!

You want to clarify that Steve?
I'd say most of NY isn't as bad as California.
All we got that sucks is New York City and we gave that to Jersey years ago (Bums just won't take it).

BTW...Did you hear why new jersey has so many toxic waste dumps, and california has so many lawyers? New jersey got to pick FIRST. Newjersey probably just didn't want New york city. YUCK!

            Now that's a real burger...

I finally remembered what the burger I missed the most from L.A. was...

almost anyone from L.A. has probably heard of Tommys (the original, not all the imitators that sprang up over the years)...I used to go to the one on Beverly and Rampart. Sometimes at two in the morning (they are 24 hours) there would be a line around the block.

Their chili burgers were...well you would have to have one.

Didn't even bother me when I found out the owner also owned racehorses..

Is that Five Guys Burgers and Fries?... My kid went to Connecticut this summer and told me about a place called that.

As far as I know they don't have them out west.

He said it was really good...

Funny I asked what he wanted for dinner tonight and he said "Anything but turkey!"

Little does he know how many turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey salad, turkey burgers...etc...is coming his way...lol

Well, I am in the midwest now, which is ironically near the EAST coast. There is actually a guy campaigning to get rid of daylight savings time AGAIN! This place didn't adopt it until a few years ago. It is RIGHT between central and eastern.

I have a friend that SWEARS by five guys. I never heard of cheeburger cheeburger. That sounds like a takeoff from SNL or hispanic, and either way I probably wouldn't like it.

Steve the only similarity to SNL is the name and the ambience is a 50s/60s soda fountain.

They are spreading quickly. I first had them in Pennsylvania and there are a bunch in Jersey which is where I thought you were.

OK. YEAH, I have been in jersey for several months. It IS right over the border to new york though. STILL, I am driving LITTLE, outside of two trips to/from CT.

The only thing special about 5 Guys is the food is made to order. I wasn't all that impressed.

Now if you really want a treat go with Cheeburger Cheeburger. And they have the absolute best shakes.

Actually, that's not true, but since getting "famous" 5 Guys has gone downhill, so maybe that was your experience.

5 Guys is more like an original McDonalds. You walk in and you have a very limited menu: Burgers,Hot Dogs and fries.

Their burgers are made to order, and they say their meat is never frozen.Their burgers are definitely a couple of steps above any fast food place.

Their real standout though was the fries. Fresh but in the store daily, they are like what I know as boardwalk fries. The fries are almost always better than anywhere else, fast food or not.

The biggest downside to 5 Guys is that when they first opened in the area, you could eat there with burger, fries and a drink for about $5-$6. Now the fries serving has gotten smaller and almost doubles in prise, along with almost everything else. To get the burger, fries and drink now you can expext to pay about $11 or $12.

I first (and last) had 5 Guys probably 2-3 years ago. They were relatively new in a really big mall here. I do remember them being more expensive than fast food places. Their price was closer to eating at a restaurant and we have a number of good diners and Champs that have great burgers if you want to sit for awhile.

I think that is the beauty of fast food. It is fast, not good, not cheap but fast. I remember waiting longer than expected for food at 5 Guys and it was probably more my expectation that it should have been served faster than how slow the process was.

But I honestly didn't think the fries were that much better than any other restaurant fries. I have to admit though I am not much of a fry eater. I do better stealing a couple from someone else's plate because I will never eat a whole order. In fairness, I am not that crazy about the Cheeburger fries either.

I don't know what Cheeburger puts in their meat but the beauty of Cheeburger is you can order a size that you like and have a huge selection of toppings so you can really vary your selections. I like a smaller burger but I know a lot of guys like a bigger burger so everyone is happy.

Weighing the entire experience, I prefer Cheeburger but I can see how people would like 5 Guys.

I remember those early MacDonald's. When I was a kid every couple of months we had MacDonald's day at school and they would serve hot dogs and orange soda. If there were fries I have blocked that out of my memory. And Ronald MacDonald would come too.

If memory serves, they use to have hotdogs at Orange Julius too. O.M.G. I love Orange Julius but the ones here don't have food. In fact they are all paired with Dairy Queen now.
