I've been trying to find out what makes MSG (monosodium glutamate) bad to eat. So far, I have found no compelling evidence that MSG is bad for you. So why is MSG bad for you? Please provide links to reliable, scientific studies on MSG (vs quacks).

Here's on article on it:

It's your body, put in it what you desire.

When the doctor can't find the reason, cause or cure, like most things, they'll "give you treatment", it'll be between you and him.

"Treatment".., yeah, bushmen put dehydrated goat nose on ailments, they call that treatment also.

Got to love these "scientific" , above reproach, type terminologies, the public at large love the comfort of deception.

There is plenty of Google results giving you both sides.

Something is either good or bad, why look for justifications for something you want to do anyway?

The next CNN news story will probably be why Chocolate cake, coffee , salt , candy bars and other stuff is GOOD for you, with "scientific" studies( oh God, pul-lease) from "brand name" researchers that can verify it for the public.

One reason they consistently put out this TMZ/Enquirer/Globe type news is thats what people want: a justification they can live with to do what they want to do anyway.

Good luck on your "research" in search for "truth".

Although there seems to be no compelling evidence that MSG in moderation is bad for you, it probably (like with almost everything else you eat) is a question of too ... i.e. too much will be bad for you. So, if you eat a lot of MSG-enhanced foods everyday, for several years, you might end up regretting it. Personally, I try to avoid/limit anything that has "salt" anywhere in its definition ...

When I lived in the Philippines it was very common to have msg served, in food, as a condiment..etc, don't know if it still is.

I believe it was very common in Japan too and all over Asia...even though I was stationed out of Japan, really didn't spend to much time there. That is a Japanese MSG product on this billboard outside Batangas P.I.

I would be hard pressed to remember anyone just falling over and flopping like a fish or going postal because of it.

I think the effects have been greatly exaggerated over the years.
A lot of 'Twinkie Defense' going on.

Although I'm sure that some people are allergic to it, same way some people have a deadly reaction to peanuts.

I was under the impression that it had been outlawed in the US, seems I was wrong, maybe just advertising it was.

I liked it, then again I don't think of it much either, anymore.

However, researchers have found no definitive evidence of a link between MSG and these symptoms. Researchers acknowledge, though, that a small percentage of people may have short-term reactions to MSG. Symptoms are usually mild and don't require treatment. The only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid foods containing MS
    From the Mayo Clinic website

Edit: I must be wrong about it being outlawed, there were lawsuits won against the FDA trying to regulate it. I really could swear they used to advertise it here many years ago, Now you never see any ads for it.
Hell if I can go get some I will. The taste is much better with some foods.

I love Kikkoman soy sauce and from what I'm reading soy sauce has it.

It's really not that bad. It's in millions of foods and just adds to the flavor of it. I guess too much results in cancer, but if your genes don't show cancer trends then just eat what you want.

Well, MSG was kind of DISCOVERED in Japan. People wapped food in seaweed and found it tasted better. NOT because of the taste of anything, etc... But that it made the meats taste better, etc... They tried to isolate it, and came up with MSG.

They then started using LESS food, and lower quality, and compensated by usng MSG, so yu got a double whammy. LESS nutrition, and more MSG. MSG belongs to a group known as excitotoxins. They are things that over tax something, and become dangerous because of THAT. Anyway, try looking it up on google:

BTW Japan, and many asian CULTURES, ue a rather SMALL amount of MSG to ENHANCE the food. That is a MAJOR difference from some companies that try to REPLACE the food.

    Yikes:
Glutamate toxicity - encyclopedia article about Glutamate toxicity.
" The toxicity of glutamate was then observed by D. R. Lucas and J. P. Newhouse in 1957, when the feeding of monosodium glutamate to newborn mice destroyed the neurons in the inner layers of the retina.[7] Later, in 1969, John Olney discovered the phenomenon was not restricted to the retina, but occurred throughout the brain, and coined the term excitotoxicity. He also assessed that cell death was restricted to postsynaptic neurons, that glutamate agonists were as neurotoxic as their efficiency to activate glutamate receptors, and that glutamate antagonists could stop the neurotoxicity.[8]"

It excites your adrenaline system so for sensitive people it can cause rapid hearbeat and also trigger migraines. Its bad for all people but your body may not show obvious symptoms.

We prefer to avoid the MSG, as well as loads of salt on everything. I think you are just better off to stay mostly away from that stuff.

Your body doesn't need it so why put it in? It's like aspartame in fizzy drinks and fluoride in our drinking water. It's my understanding (and belief) that they inhibit the natural cellular process of the body and serve to suppress our immune and endocrine system by 'attacking' the pituitary gland.
