BBC News - N Korean leader Kim Jong-il dies

If there is any country in the world that really deserves a regime change, it is N. Korea. Let's see whether he could pass the dictatorship successfully onto his 28 year old son.

I DOUBT it, but that WOULD be nice.

BEWARE THOUGH! There is a SEVERE threat of a war with russia and iran! I mean acts have been taken on BOTH sides and threats have come from the top. The capture of that drone only hurt things! From what I have heard, Iran is claiming they have done something that has been feared for DECADES to some degree! I mean like close to 100 years! For 20-30, maybe more, some have feared that PRECISELY what they claimed to have done would happen. It SHOULD have been VERY difficult! It SHOULD have been specially encrypted! The military SUPPOSEDLY kept SOME technology SECRET! That LAST point iran claimed they overcame by looking at OTHER US aircraft, etc!

So WHAT did they claim, as I heard anyway? They claimed that they effectively created a fake GPS environment to make the plane believe that it was landing on US soil!

If true, that is ESPECIALLY bad in this case, because it should have encrypted remote controls and remote visual, so the pilot could recognize the error and compensate. Having THAT lack of control on a platform that could have weapons is just *****DUMB*****!

Then again, maybe it had a homing failsafe, so that if communications were cut off, and it could direct itself, it would land on home base. Iran tricked it into thinking IRAN was home base.

Imagine if iran could do that remotely? They MIGHT be able to make a GPS bomb think ISRAEL was IRAN so if someone bombed iran, it would hit israel. That WOULD be harder, because of the positioning and power needed, but it is conceivable.

In any event, that is scary.

Unfortunately, it could turn out the other way round. Whoever take over will probably want to prove himself by launching a provocation i.e. an attack on South Korea. If South Korea decides to respond in kind, then all bets are off.

But out of the "Axis of Evil" states, I would say N. Korea has by far the worse record in terms of threatening its neighbors and sponsoring state terrorism.

Usually don't say this about a death but, good.

Time to get rid of that whole damn family.

If you go to the DMZ today, it's still a war zone. Hundreds of soldiers have lost their lives in firefights since the armistice.
Seoul which is only (if I remember correctly) about 13 miles (edit:correction Seoul is 35 miles from the border) away, still lives under fear of an invasion and the military readiness shows it.
And yea I have been up there.

Time to get in there and feed those hungry kids and brainwashed adults.

    From the article...

The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work.
lol ...who do they think they are fooling?

    From reality...
For a few years in the early 1990s, it was confirmed by Hennessy that Kim Jong Il was it’s best customer, spending about $600,000 to $850,000 annually on the liquor. He is partial to the Paradis cognac, which can sell for over $700 per bottle. In comparison, the average North Korean makes about $1000 per year.
Anyone who makes his people suffer, so he can live in luxury, offends my delicate sensibilities.

    Best news I've heard today.

State TV also announced that Kim Jong Eun will take over as leader.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5262208].message }}
  • I know this is going to sound a little "crazy" or contra"dictator"y...

But I'm almost sorry to hear this...I read his chosen successor-son Kim Jong Eun is even more of a whack-job ill-informed god-delusion than his old man...
(but it must be nice to start your military career as a 4-star general)

North Korea might be even worse off than they were yesterday...

But, also - as Roaddog said...it's the best news I've heard today! Which is really not good at all...

Where will we ever find another super-human like Kim - that can Bowl a perfect 300, and play a perfect round of Golf The FIRST TIME they even play the game????

Crony Corporatism goes against the nature of real free enterprise and genuine capitalism, bad for society. But make not mistake about it, Communism has been much worse.

Actually he died on Saturday. Most of the delay was from the DPRK authorites working out how they could put the best possible spin on it.

Once it was finally released, the delay on it being Tweeted was probably from people waiting for it to be confirmed.

Over the decades Fidel Castro was said to have died many times, right up until he finally did pass away earlier this year.

And no, he wasn't the King of North Korea, anymore than Stalin was King of Russia, or Mao was King of China.

Jim - Apparently the video has fooled the news reporters or they think they're fooling us because they seem to be reporting it like it's an amazing outpouring of grief born of true affection. They also seem to be trying to soften his image. He's no longer a dictator but the North Korean leader, among other more benign terms.

Just to clarify I don't actually believe it for one moment.

I never realised how brain washed they were until I saw a documentary where some very nice Americans were, under the armed watchfulness of N. Korean gaurds, allowed into the North to do catarct operations on a group of then blind N. Koreans.

On having the bandages removed and seeing again for the first time in a long time, the first thing they did was declare undying love for their dear leader, then began spitting bile and declaring their will to fight and die for him in the "fight" against America and all directly in front of the very Americans that gave them their sight back. They didn't even acknowledge them, it was as though Kim himself had done it by big rabbit magic, or something.

Whole country is a bunch of wackos (sure there are defectors here and there too). almost can't blame them, their oppressed and brainwashed from the time their born. They know nothing else b/c of the countries restrictions on outside news/info etc, I watched another documentary where they think where they live and how they live and their technology and this and that... that they are on top of the world.

One brainwashed country.... if only they could wonder out for a bit and see how much better and open the world is. Maybe sneak over to South Korea and marvel how much nicer it is, and party 24/7 since it's like being in Miami there lol

I mistook his resignation date as his date of death. Apologies to all.

The big point though was that he was rumoured to have died many times since assuming power.

        I can't speak for TL, don't know.
Just saying they were the same people, just in case you didn't know.

The 'perfect' thing was probably thought up by some PR group he had in his basement, to make a stronger figurehead...for some reason the Wizard of Oz comes to mind.

I agree with what you said about spoiled kids being even worse...maybe the world and his people most of all, will get lucky...and the self indulgent craziness will skip a generation....but the odds aren't good.

  • Kim Jong-il: Ten things you never knew...or never wanted to know...
The North Korean leader, or 'Ever-Victorious, Iron-Willed Commander', was a big fan of Elizabeth Taylor and very fresh sashimi – and a whizz at golf

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, who died on Saturday.
    Photograph: KOREA NEWS SERVICE/Reuters/Corbis

    1) North Korea's future 'dear leader' was born in, well, no one seems exactly sure where or when. According to the legend his family cultivated, he was born at his father's log cabin on the side of North Korea's sacred Mt Paektu in 1942.

A swallow was seen in the sky, signalling the early arrival of spring. A new star shone in the sky and a double rainbow was sighted nearby. The Soviets, meanwhile, said their records showed he was born in the Siberian village of Vyatskoye in 1941.

    2) The first confirmed sighting of Kim Jong-il came in the early 1970s, when he was spotted on holiday in Malta, where it is understood he was receiving personal English lessons from the Maltese prime minister, Dom Mintoff.

    3) In 1994, when he succeeded his father and "Eternal President" Kim Il-sung to lead North Korea, he was granted the first of more than 200 official titles. These included "Guiding Star of the 21st Century", "Glorious General, Who Descended from Heaven", "Amazing Politician", "Ever-Victorious, Iron-Willed Commander" and "Highest Incarnation of the Revolutionary Comradely Love".

    4) When Pyongyang's first golf course opened in 1994, he was given the honour of playing the first round. When he came to sign his card at the end, it stated that he had shot a 38-under-par round, which included 11 holes-in-one. His 17 bodyguards were put forward as witnesses to his remarkable feat.

    5) In 2006, in reaction to North Korea testing a nuclear weapon, the US stepped up its sanctions against the rogue state. In an attempt to dent Kim Jong-il's known love of luxury goods, the US banned 60 luxury items entering the country, including yachts, Chanel No 5, Segways and even rare stamps.

Knowing that he loved cognac – his court apparently spent $800,000 (£517,000) a year on Hennessy – the US also banned lead crystal and spirits.

    6) The US government also banned televisions with screens larger than 29in. It was another attempt to impact on Kim Jong-il's lifestyle. As a film buff, he had a collection of 20,000 videos and DVDs, including his favourites such as Rambo, Friday the 13th and the complete oeuvre of Elizabeth Taylor.

    7) In 1978, Kim Jong-il reportedly ordered the kidnapping of celebrated South Korean film-maker Shin Sang-ok and his actor wife Choi Eun-hee so that they could make a socialist version of Godzilla, his all-time favourite film.

    8) Ermanno Furlanis, an Italian chef who once worked directly for Kim Jong-il, wrote a book about his experiences stating that he was ordered to carve sashimi from a live fish and never to place anchovies on pizzas. He was also sent to Uzbekistan to buy caviar, Denmark to buy pork, China for grapes and to Thailand for mangos and papayas. A former personal doctor also said that a team of 200 scientists worked to cultivate the perfect diet to ensure he had a longer life.

    9) In 2000, a new food "invented" by Kim Jong-il called "Gogigyeopbbang" was introduced to North Koreans. It was described as "double bread with meat", but took on the uncanny appearance of a conventional hamburger. In 2006, another culinary revolution was introduced on Jong-il's orders in an attempt to alleviate food shortages – the breeding of giant rabbits.

    10) A government website once stated that Kim Jong-il never needed to urinate or defecate. But the reference was later removed. (*Editor's note: this person now works for Fox News as a fact checker)

As fur' them giaanti rabeets...they ain't so bad wunst ya gits'em broke!

This of course, also requires massive steroid loading of the Carrots...

So Kim gets in touch with 68-year-old Karl Szmolinsky of Berlin, the world's foremost breeder of giant rabbits, and says he wants Szmolinsky to come to Pyongyang and set up a farm to breed these rabbits. For Kim believes that the meat yielded by these rabbits will end his people's starvation. [...]

Undeterred, Kim pays for 12 rabbits, at a cost of about $115 each. He tells Szmolinsky that the rabbits will be kept at a petting zoo in Pyongyang and, in a few months, Szmolinsky will be flown in to help really set up a farm for breeding.

In February of 2007, about five or six months later, Szmolinsky gets a call from a North Korean official canceling that trip. Why? Because, Szmolinsky believes, Kim couldn't resist... and ate the giant rabbits to celebrate his birthday.

North Korea is a unique country. I somehow doubt the people will revolt and I also doubt the regime change will be less harsh on their civilians. I think this will most likely play it's course until he is overthrown for making irrational and dangerous decisions.

      Probably FOUR reasons!
      1. Not much to live for/do.
      2. They are paranoid that someone will attack them.
      3. They probably ration power.
      4. They probably have a curfew.

After seeing the tear gas comments...and why should I do that if people say money is no problem and I should pay 90%, and they won't give me a penny? I was thinking about a song over dinner and I found the video. The video is even better, because of the visuals:

A father once told me about how he almost moved a circular saw onto his little girls leg, who ran up to him and surprised him. Luckily NEITHER was hurt, but he felt MISERABLE about what COULD have happened. He was at a point where, had she kept running, he couldn't have properly controlled the saw fast enough. Had it happened, he probably WOULD have cried like a baby. Who could say. He certainly would feel worse than he feels, and he feels BAD! That little girl is probably about 16 now.

I'll add just ONE thing. I would almost PREFER just guns to propaganda. N.G. and N.K., and other places had BOTH. Gun are bad, but at least you know they are there, and others may, but propaganda can be used to make people that would otherwise be good helpful friends that would die for one another believe they are enemies that want to kill one another. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. In a way, it is WORSE. And it is often used to leverage guns so that one may seem like a thousand.

It would be nice to think he'd be a rebellious son and turn things around -- but considering who his daddy was, he probably has been raised to view humans who are not royalty as nothing but an expendable source of wealth. I doubt that empathy training was part of his educational plan.

You know, I am always ASTOUNDED by things like "american idol" where I think a person is a HORRIBLE.....What should I call it?..... Well, THEY might say "singer". Sometimes it is clear that at least many HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS of people agree with me on that assessment. And they actually tell the judges that they will be sorry, that they are like the most talented on the planet!

I have to wonder if people like Kim Jong Il, and his son, are the political equivalent. Someone that is INCREDIBLY stupid, and inept, and lead to believe they are the EPITOME of perfection in it. ESPECIALLY since the american idol contestants may only have dozens saying they are great, and kim jong il, et al..., may have MILLIONS!

With that being said, they may actually believe that they are sent here by god to set things right, and may fight to the death.

BTW there is NO room for empathy with someone that has that mindset.

Oh, there was NEVER a doubt about that! The thing is how far do his beliefs about the perfection of his ideas go?

I have no doubt that there are lots of people in NK that are not brainwashed.

Most people know better but NK also probably has millions of voluntary homeland type spies so people have to be very, very careful of what they say, who they say it to and they even have to guard their facial expressions.

That kind of pressure has to be a bitch to live with.

Back in the early 1980s I had a friend from Hungary when it was behind the iron curtain.

He'd talk about how every day after work, he'd walk past the same security agent, and each and every time, pull out his wallet to get his ID card. This went on for years.

I asked him why the guard didn't just remember him and let him by without all the hassle. He said it was because there was probably another guy peeking out a window making sure the security agent was doing his job, and there was probably another guy with a telescope spying on the guy looking out the window watching the security agent, making sure he was doing his job.

Hell and I bet we have more agencies...they cover the alphabet pretty well these day's.
I am beginning to think I am the only one without a badge in this country,
hell even the building inspectors carry badges, believe it or not.

Diggit Kurt, it's akin to what goes on at a casino where the pit boss is watching the dealer and the floor supervisor is watching the pit boss and the eye in the sky is watching everyone.

(Isn't there someone else in the chain???)

Folks that live in repressive countries fear not only for their lives but for the lives of their family and friends.

The father of the thug in Syria would raise a whole village to send a message and I have no doubt that if the world wasn't watching - the son would be a lot more brutal.

This is what exactly happened at an eye hospital in N. Korea which was in a BBC documentary! A few days after their cataract operation, a large group of patients would be brought to a large hall in the hospital. The eye patches would then be removed. As they regained their site, they would then cry loudly and kneel in front of a portrait of Kim Il Sung and thank him profusely.

I just heard on a news program today that they had stations that did NOTHING but make IL sound lucky, etc... An example given was that he had 4 holes in one in a row.

They said that some is brainwashed, some out of fear, and some is probably stockholm syndrome. They remarked how they didn't see any actual tears.
