Did WF get rid of user counts?

When I would go to the homepage of WF, it would usually list all of the forums/sub-forums, and next to each, it would say say the number of users, i.e. "Warrior Special Offers (3,895 viewing)" or something like that, but it doesn't anymore. Why not? Am I missing something here?

  • Yes they did and who knows why. Really irritating. Reminds me of Facebook "updating" every two seconds. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

    • The only place I can see this having a significant impact is for those who run
WSOs and track how many members are in the WSO section at a given time on
a given day of the week. If you do this long enough, you can see trends as to
when the most visitors are and then from that determine when the best time is
      to launch your WSO.

Aside from that, I don't see how it matters one way or another.

  • There is NO way to determine if a person leaves a page. Historically, such counts have been WRONG! Hits is the number of page requests. Visits is the number of page requests after about a 20 or 40 minute gap from a given IP. Were those "visits" by the same person? VERY POSSIBLE! If you go to dinner, come back, and click on a page, that counts as another visit EVEN though it is the SAME visit!

And GRANTED, you could have an exit page say a person left, or have a polling javascript, but that shows things down, doesn't handle crashes, or changing focus.

  • Ummm... Steve? They're not trying to tell when someone has left a page. Just how many are viewing any page within the forum at a given time. And, with cookies that track which page a person is on right now, you can do that with a consistent degree of reliability. Not absolute, but consistent. Which is all you need for relative traffic estimations.

    • Well, cookies don't vanish either. My point is simply that the number wwould tend to be high, unless people stay a while and a timeout occurs causing it to be low.

      Steve
  • Well I guess the bottom line is that the viewer counts are gone and they're not coming back?
