Happy New Year Everyone!

MY PROBLEM: I do voice overs for a living, and for the last three weeks, everything I record sounds like a NyQuil commercial!

I'm hoping someone out there has a remedy for a head/sinus cold, preferably something natural Teas, herbal remedies or even an exercise move like holding my head upside down or something...I'll try anything at this point!

Thanks a bunch!
Holly

Apple cider vinegar is always good -mix it with raw honey and water.

Neti pots are good for clearing the sinuses -but now they're telling us that you should use distilled water, as a couple of people have died recently from weird infections by using tap water in neti pots (which tells you something about today's tap water!).

Other than that, the usual health food store stuff like Emergen C or other Vitamin C products and Zinc lozenges.

      Awesome, Thanks Larry

I'm going to try the apple cider vinegar solution, do you know approx. how much honey/vinegar, and is it better with cold or warm water, also am I sipping or chugging?? - just making sure I do everything correctly so it works.

      Thanks.

  • Probably warm water & sipping on the cider vinegar is best - chugging may rasp your throat...(not much vinegar - 2 tbsp to 8oz water)

I used to do VO's, and a little Drambuie was nice - Scotch & Honey...great combo!
(just don't drive and voice-over at the same time :rolleyes

Part of the big problem is also hearing yourself when your head is stuffed up...it's hard to gauge...sometimes my voice is/was much deeper when I have a head cold - it came in handy for certain types of copy (why do you think Sam Elliot gets so much work? )

Do you usually do your own "voice"? or character spots...if you have to depend on a signature voice or match existing reads, head colds can be a real pain...

On the plus side...you could use it to your advantage - do "sick" spots, or "sexy voice"...

Thanks for the help - though the scotch & honey sounds much more appealing now. But since I have to drive later, I'll try the vinegar first.

I mainly do my own voice, so yes, it's been a real pain. Thanks again for your help!

Holly the water, honey and ACV is a drink called Switzle.
The normal mix is 2T Honey dissolved in 4 oz. hot water.
Then add 12 oz. cold water then 2 T. ACV.
Use organic ACV with the mother in it like Braggs, which is available in practically every grocery store. My daily cold drink is AVC in spring water and has been for about 2 years now.

Myself for a cold, I like to pound down a bunch of O.J. and then get outside it the fresh air.

This will help for sinuses - make a triple batch, then drink about 3 cups per day....it will kill the infection after a day or two!

Mix all of the following ingredients together and drink hot.

    Recipe:

    Add 1 cup tomato juice,
    1 tsp chopped fresh garlic,
    1/2 tsp of hot sauce,
1 tsp lemon juice (fresh lemons work the best),
and a pinch or two of celery salt for flavor.

Holly, ThomM's recipe sounds about right, though I never heard it called a Switzle!

ACV is great for many things. A doctor named Jarvis wrote a couple of books about it some years back. I remember one is called Folk Medicine.

When I first started using ACV about 5 years ago, a member here gave me that recipe and said their grandmother called it that.
At that time I had arthritis in both my thumbs so bad I couldn't pick up a coffee cup unless I cupped it in both hands.
After I cured the arthritis I laid off the AVC for a couple of years, then I noticed I was feeling pretty blah all the time and went back to the AVC.
I really don't know why everyone doesn't drink it with all it can do for you.
For example last summer during horseshoes one night, all of my friends where bitchin about all the prescriptions they take and their aches and pains. All but one other friend who also drinks AVC every day.
He's 60 and I'm 58 and neither of us go to the doctors or have a reason to. Also neither of us are on any prescriptions at all.
Here's a good link to not only AVC but also other 'home remedies' with readers input on what works and what doesn't.

    Hi Holly,

3 weeks doesn't sound like the common cold, it's too long for that. I'd guess one of 3 options:
    a) an allergy
    b) an inflammation
    c) something made your immune system weak and you keep catching different colds

    In any case vitamin C @ 0.5-1gr every 4 hours can improve your symptoms (assuming you're not pergnant);

    Garlic or echinacea can strengthen your immune system;

    Natural anti-inflammatories can help with inflammation - any of the ingredients in zyflamend (you can buy them separately, cheaper), omega 3, resveratrol etc;

For allergies, in the short term anti-histamines might help, but in the long term - it's mostly a question of looking for the cause in your diet or lifestyle (e.g. a good friend of mine just fixed his allergies by eliminating gluten).

    Hope this helps!

Have you tried some chicken soup to help loosen the congestion? Homemade is best.

Zinc - Vitamin D3, preferably natural sunlight. Vitamin D produced by sunlight will also produce a sulferic substance that has enormous health benefits........OJ has a natural antihistamine in it along with trace minerals. Zinc - yes, but in tabs not lozenges. You can drink the OJ to take the taste of the vinegar away, LOL.

A clove of raw garlic and capsule of golden seal.

Chamomile tea before bed (it will make you tired) will clean out your bloodstream. And some good old fashioned vicks vapo-rub on your chest will clear stuff out a tad, too.

Eat mixed veggie salads and ------- Mushrooms. Broil a potabello or some ****akes in butter (no - not margerine).

Then go to bed for about 12 hours.

For the sinuses, I'd go with hot peppers. Chile Relleno or Jalepeno poppers (sorry, I don't have a tilde that I know how to use to make the Spanish look right.)

For your voice, try hot tea with a lot of lemon and honey. Put the lemon in first. For some reason it works better that way.

    Feel better!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all you suggestions.

I've been drinking the ACV with honey and lemon, and it's definitely working. I'm not 100% yet, but hopefully I'll be back behind the mic by tomorrow. I did a lot of research on ACV, and have decided to continue to use it daily, even after the cold has completely gone. I've already noticed a huge difference in my energy levels, and even went without coffee this morning which was really strange. lol

Funny - My old boss told me about it a few years ago, yet I wasn't able to take the taste of it, now, since there's money on the line, I don't find it that bad.

Good to hear it's working for you
I just had to up my ACV intake.
About 7 days ago both my knees started aching real bad.
My right knee hurt so bad I could hardly walk, and that's my good knee.
So I went from 1T. to 2T. per 16oz. of water and am drinking 4 of those a day. I started the 2T. doses two days ago and as of yesterday neither knee hurts. I can't do squats yet but I can walk again without pain.
The 2T. dose is giving me more energy also and I've cut my coffee down for 6 cups a day to 3.
I give most of the credit to the ACV, but I'm sure drinking more spring water has something to do with it also
