Strong password advice

I've just found some pretty useful advice on choosing and using passwords on the Microsoft website. I thought that warriors might find it worth a read: Strong Passwords and Password Security | Microsoft Security

If you want to generate strong passwords, Google "password generator" to find websites that can generate strings of total garbage (...in the nicest possible sense of the word... ).

That's some good information - I'm surprised M$ isn't trying to sell it . One thing that's not so great about random generators is that they're generally too hard for (many) computer users to remember, which makes them resort to writing it down. Unfortunately, this defeats the purpose of having a "strong" password.

I would suggest taking a favorite phrase or quote from a book, and replace the letters with special characters or numbers. For instance, at one time I used "Th3Art0fI|\|trus10nbyK3v1nM1tnik" for my router. I've since stopped being so paranoid. My fiance also advised that if she has to reconfigure the router settings on her laptop again, "I'll be sleeping on the couch".

Good advice qubex, about making a strong password from a phrase. The variation I heard about using a phrase was to take the first letter of each word, and mix it up with strange characters.

John thanks for the link. I especially liked the Microsoft warning about password strategies to avoid.

    To avoid weak, easy-to-guess passwords:

    - Avoid sequences or repeated characters.

    - Avoid using only look-alike substitutions of numbers or symbols.

    - Avoid your login name.

    - Avoid dictionary words in any language.

    - Use more than one password everywhere.

    - Avoid using online storage.
