I swear you just can't make up conspiracy theories that even start to compete with what is really going on. This is insane.

Not sure how, but you can bet if they do this here it will have some repercussions everywhere else.

What I'm wondering is if we will have to pay some sort of new fee to use the net and if we can be banned if we say anything someone on top doesn't like. There's not enough info here for my liking. There is, though, that old addage that it's for OUR safety. Yep, I feel so safe not knowing if I can get whacked offline at someone else's whims.

It sounds like the bright idea is to allow a person to "create AN identity" - not to identify yourself. I think it's ridiciulous to justify it as people not having to remember passwords but probably the only jusitification they could think of.
        Lame brain idea.

MANY people had the same sort of idea. I once created a monolithic system on my server so that any person that used any system could use the others with the same profile. I even came up with a way to have it span servers. Later someone came up with an idea called LDAP(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) MANY organizations today run their enterprise through it. It is nice. My last few contracts I had DOZENS of environments and maybe 2 passwords. At least 1 of those passwords was done through LDAP. NOW, google, facebook, and several other sites offer a system to use THEIR password database. HECK TECHNICALLY, PAYPAL works kind of like that! The site goes to paypal, you enter your paypal info, and paypal and the site validate each other and paypal says YEAH, I know this guy, and just sent you X dollars for him.

BUT, you will note that banks don't use those other sites, etc... HECK, several banks now have OTHER checks as well. And sites that use those other password systems give you a choice, etc.... STILL, people don't like it.

And I have TWO birthdates! BOTH are approximately the correct age. I reserve my REAL birthdate for systems that have a legitimate reason. and I will probably eventually have different emails.

"We are not talking about a national ID card. We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy, and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities," Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said at an event Friday at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, according to CNET.com.
ONLY AN IDIOT would make such a claim!!!!!!!!!

    1. national ID card. NATIONAL? NATIONAL!? WHICH nation? They CAN'T mean germany or denmark, or even the EU, and CERTAINLY not the US, so WHICH nation? For the rest to not be MORONIC, the "nation" would have to be the WORLD, but WHO would manage it? AGAIN, it can't be ANY of the above. It must be some super smart disinterested all powerful guy from some planet that is TOTALLY incompatible with EARTH!
    2. government-controlled system? Same as #1
    3. "What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy." AGAIN, it must be WORLDWIDE like I described in #1! If even a WINDOW in my house is open, security is (ahem...) out the window! EVEN if I give a key to a trusted neighbor, security is hurt. How much more so if it is given to a stranger walking the sidewalk?
    4. "and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords", ok, here is where it is just MORONIC! EVERYONE ****ON THE PLANET**** must change all their code, disobey various laws, and/or see PRIVATE info? YEAH RIGHT!(SARC) And WHO will manage the database? I don't even know if there are people on venus or pluto, do YOU? I GUARANTEE if it is on earth in this fashion, it WILL be a big target of hacks.
    5. "through creation and use of more trusted digital identities". OK, DREAM TIME! WHO can I trust more than ME? Would zuckerberg trust me? NOPE! Would google trust zuckerberg? NOPE! Would ANYONE here that is the least bit intelligent trust the government? NOPE! REMEMBER FOLKS! Only a couple days ago I posted of how a person is being FORCED to give up her password so they can annoy her, destroy her life, invade her privacy, and possibly put her behind bars!
    6. "Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said". OK, that guy should be FIRED! He obviously does NOT know about security! HEY GARY! You want a unique national ID? USE THE SSN! Do me a favor! Before you force us to, PLEASE advertise yours with your name. To test things out a bit better, and make things a LITTLE easier and faster, PLEASE include your birth date. And REMEMBER, people were once told that the SSN would NOT be used in that fashion.

BWT if you want to get rid of passwords, just get rid of them! YEAH, I can just log on, and BANG! Hell, if we had a worldwide id, it may end up stored in a cookie, and people could use that if they have access to a computer you used! I've seen that done with CREDIT CARD INFO! A lot of sites, like THIS one, do that with passwords NOW!

I created a simple password I used for over 7 years! HECK, I had THREE simple passwords! One for sites I didn't trust. One for unimportant sites I trusted. One for other sites. I eventually had to change them! WHY? Security breech threats, and new levels established to complicate passwords to prevent such breaches. So NOW, I have probably DOZENS of passwords, and HUNDREDS of password combinations!

If a single password system is setup, all that breaks down! If someone hacks into my account, they know my user ID. If there is a number associated with it, they have THAT! That number, or name if there is no number, can NEVER change, or all accounts will be deactivated! So the crooks now only have to guess the password. And once they guess it, they have access to EVERYTHING!

The more there is to gain, the more they will spend trying, etc... If they want to break into your clickbank account, WHY? To get maybe one check or something? If they knew you were bill gates, and it would give them access to a few billion, they would have a lot of incentive.

If it is a standard interface, as locke is suggesting, most passwords could maybe be broken in a DAY! If a builtin delay, and lockout, are added, which most sites do to prevent brute force attempts, it will effectively log you out of your account giving the hacker OTHER ways to get your info, and keeping YOU out! NORMALLY such methods affect accounts in only ONE area, but HERE we are talking WORLD WIDE!

Yeah - I know that this was reported by main stream media and we know that they can be full of horse hocky when they want to (which is like....um.......daily). But NDAA passed and nobody ever thought that would happen - as well as MSM never reported about it as far as I ever heard. I could be wrong but I never heard it.

I don't see this as being out of line with their other Internet BS such as SOPA and PIPA. Not unbelievable to me at all that legislation like this would go on. Like I said - need more info, this was just a heads up. What it sounds like to me is a nifty new way to make us subject to being licensed to be able to go online - and licenses are usually nothing more than a new way to generate income (hidden taxes) for them. With SOPA breathing down our necks, though, it very well could be a method of getting people offline who are talking about subjects that they don't want talked about.

Who the heck even knows what's in the heads of those people these days. They very obviously do not appreciate the freedom we have on here right now for whatever bent little reason they seem to have. Is it money or power or both? IF anyone hears anything further, though, definitely put your link here so we can track this one. From what I read, it doesn't seem like something that is being taken through congress, at least for now, so there won't be a bill to read at this point in time. Obama seems to be proposing this one on his own.

It may be BECAUSE of SOPA/PIPA! Like I said, this WON'T work unless it is WORLD WIDE! I have several accounts that aren't in the US. M/S google, facebook, amazon, etc... can say the SAME! AND, EVEN if they had EVERYONE in the US trapped, and ONLY them, who is to say that one can't be hacked, and a foreigner can still pretend, even without the ID.

Anyway, if it covers all the people violating SOPA, the government can just deactivate the ID, which would disable all accounts. And the government could track all accounts a person has simply by tracking the access of the logins.

They said they would be transparent. To one like me, that knows how this works, etc... This IS pretty transparent.

You know sometimes I just can't help my damn self.

You know the only thing that surprises me about big money/gov/whoever trying to take control of the net?
Is that it surprises any of you.

The biggest means of communications, commerce, database information...blah, blah...etc. ever, and you think there is no one out there trying to find ways of controlling it?

That just boggles my mind...we'll be lucky to see another 20 years of a free Internet.
They can't control it?...want to bet...you do not control the physical infrastructure.
What is there, thirteen, fourteen main servers?
Remember a few years ago there were no (or very few) companies on the net requiring tax reporting?
Do you actually think that these companies are requiring it now out of patriotism, uh...no. They are being forced to under threats from the gov, who can and will shut down their entire operations/companies.

These little SOPA bills and whatever other acronym 'they' come up with...are the very beginning.

IMHO in the future, if you really want to have/hear an unbiased opinion on the net...you'll have to 'hack' in, for lack of a better word, with your own equipment, be that servers or satellite feeds or whatever the latest doodad is.

You know what really concerns me? It's this trending towards cloud computing, everyone's data in a central server (or several...I do realize) ...there are already banks and this that and the other companies doing it.
My personal data would be safer on paper in a locked filing cabinet somewhere.

But the real problem is...your not going to be able to do a damn thing about it.

And how far after that, is the chip? You want to be connected to the net?

    How about 24/7...

At first it will be voluntary, complete with the "for your convenience" BS...only when it becomes mandatory and even the sleeping dunderheads realize, will the real problems begin.

Aha..made you look...that was just a horror movie from last night...

For the record, it doesn't describe me AT ALL! SOME have BALKED at the "myth" that the phone company was ever going to start charging for modems! They TRIED! They claimed that they had to put some conditioner on the line for it.

The REALLY interesting thing is that the first few standards where at least according to THEIR specs.

It has never been free. They want you to THINK that, but it hasn't. various media used to interconnect have had taxes and various fees. The phone companies pass them along to their customers who pass them to users/customers. The ISPs have to pay also and generally bundle those charges with the other fees. So the phone companies, and the government have been getting paid for this ALL ALONG!

The physical infrastructure is MILLIONS of computers, what are you talking about? Maybe you are talking about the 13 coputers verisign uses for the various TLDs they control? That can, and HAS been replaced! Use a .de or .tv or .co.uk TLD and voila, NEW SERVERS! In order to REALLY control it they need to scare people, or practically shut down the phone system. Shutting down the phone system COULD be replaced, it will just go back to where it was in the late 70s for a while.

Remember a few years ago there were no (or very few) companies on the net requiring tax reporting?

Actually, MOST didn't think about reporting requirements for salespeople. And the salestax is relatively new. HOW are most going to find out about it? DON'T say "through the tax forms, ...". SO many are SCARED about the complexity that they even have tax preparers handle 1040ez forms!

These little SOPA bills and whatever other acronym 'they' come up with...are the very beginning.
They aren't even the beginning! They are the next step! They are the first step at PUSHING the envelope! The beginning was TAX, MORALITY, SAFETY! They had SOME legitimacy to them, didn't affect everyone, and may have had good intentions.

IMHO in the future, if you really want to have/hear an unbiased opinion on the net...you'll have to 'hack' in, for lack of a better word, with your own equipment, be that servers or satellite feeds or whatever the latest doodad is.

Yeah, they have been trying to get this adopted for at least 2 decades! One company has probably gotten rich saying bill gates is scared of this because it will kill Microsoft. And you KNOW my position on it. It is all HYPE to get you to pay MORE for LESS and give THEM more control. Even AMAZON has gone into this business, and it is starting to take off.

Just thought that was an interesting story...to go along with this.

As early as the late 80's I was wiring smart commercial buildings...where everything was run by a central computer. Probably wasn't even as powerful as the pc I use now. It could close doors, run elevators open doors, parking gates..etc.

People had certain cards to be allowed to go certain places...and it was all recorded...sounds like nothing now, it was pretty cool then. I even installed an audio system in a huge multi tiered parking lot at the headquarters of a major bank in Orange County. It was set to decibel level and would switch cameras to where a pitched scream came from.

I haven't kept up with the technology and can't even imagine what one can do now.

That was when I first realized how easy it would be to track movement on a larger scale.

Actually, the net isn't routed by supercomputers. It is routed by millions of little computers. Some are virtual pipsqueaks! But the distribution of all of them is such that it is rare that they ever have to do much work.

Some...most if I am not mistaken, will not even issue a check without your tax info these day's. I was under pressure from the Gov. that it came about.
YEP! HECK, there was a commerce package released HERE only about 6-7 years ago that didn't have any facility for that. One guy here even started a reporting agency to help out such places.

Having your head in a cloud, was an old derogatory saying to students and dreamers, if I remember correctly...the irony.
YEP, it STILL IS! And a cloud is basically just a collection of fog and to said you are foggy, etc... means the SAME thing! It basically means that you are DETACHED! It is like your mind is SOMEWHERE ELSE! What a coincidence! Two computers on a network are the SAME WAY!

You have THAT right! It is interesting! A person once mused that all inventions were created, that NO MORE could be created! They NEVER realized that nearly all laws had been created. And the idea of changing the tax code, and retirement, every year is LUDICROUS.

It IS interesting that they will tell older people "OOPS, we messed up, HERE is a Cost Of Living Adjustment(Which they give the cute name of COLA)". Meanwhile, for the younger people they say "OOPS, we messed up, we will take money from you to pay for our past mistakes, and maybe you won't ever see a penny. Sorry!". I'm lucky(sarc)! I'm right on the tail end. If there were a line, for the one right in front of me, they might say "YOU LUCKED OUT! Here's your full retirement! ENJOY!!!!"! For me they might say "SORRY, if ONLY you were born a few months earlier."! Of course, if an older person were behind me, he or she might get paid, adding insult to injury.

This whole world is filled with irony. I wonder if anyone TRULY doesn't see it. Sometimes I think this MUST be a nightmare, but I spend most of my time here, so I guess it is as real as it gets.

The one thing to remember about things like this . . . they always use a ploy that sounds [choose one: innocent, noble, necessary, harmless] to get a foot in the door without citizen resistance. It's always what they do after they get in the door that is [choose one: harmful, destructive, burdonsome, costly].

    Beware!

I know squat about techonology - but I do know that there are countries that limit and monitor their citizens online activity, such as China, and they have a billion people, so saying it can't be done doesn't make sense to me. They can monitor anything you say and every step you take via cellphone. Doing so via computer doesn't seem like that much of a stretch.

Frankly some of the zest I see going on in areas of control are really stinking of an attempt to put a leash on entrepreneurialism. It won't be the first time governments taking steps ours is now have sequestered citizens rights to do their own business. I'm thinking everyone should have a solid career to fall back on offline, or at least a brick and mortar extension of their online work.

What goes through my mind continually any more is the LOA teaching that we create our own reality. And what goes through my head several times a day because of it is "Sal, what the hell are you thinking?"
