It's a wonder that pirates aren't being targeted right now instead of countries. Too many of them. How it is that the Samolians aren't being sanctioned is kind of amazing. If it were any other country around there it wouldn't be odd that pirates of that origin would cause a freaking war.

Anyhow - nice that these people were rescued. Hope that our presence there doesn't cause or indicate political havoc.

Makes you laugh, doesn't it? On the one hand, you've got the U.S Fifth fleet itching to blast Iran back to the dark ages, on the other, U.S service men are saving their fishermen.
Perhaps the goodwill of the U.S saviors of the Iranian fishermen will avoid WWIII.
We could thank Somali pirates for saving the world then.

I think the Iranians should put a couple of Naval ships off California in order to return the favour one day.

        • This is beginning to remind me of that old joke about the hunter and the bear...

where the punchline is: "You didn't really come here to hunt...did you?"

Well, to be fair it's not the fifth fleet looking to blast them. It's the US Government. Servicemen simply do as ordered (usually)

Actually, IRAN is itching to have THEMSELVES blasted back to the stone ages. I credited iran with 9/11/2001 in 1980!!!!!!!!! YEP, I actually said BACK THEN that the US handling of the IRANIAN hostage crisis made the US look like a bunch of inept bungling IDIOTS, and could cause the moslems to be more likely to attack! In fact, I said that if something happened, it would likely happen by 1984. Luckily, that event didn't happen.

And they aren't against the US! They are against the WORLD! If the US doesn't attack, Israel, etc... MAY! In fact, the US MAY be delaying israeli intervention!

Before the 1970s coup, the US was OK with Iran, etc...

You do realize that a lot of people would disagree with you on that one?
I personally don't. It seems like there are no rights or wrongs these days.

I have a distinct feeling this is being played up.

I spent too much time in the Persian Gulf.

A little further east admittedly, but...
Back when I was in, it was common to rescue Vietnamese boat people from Thai pirates...who were extremely ruthless and would often kill every one on board these makeshift boats....we'd get em all on board, then use the boats for target practice...

It is not uncommon for rescues at sea by US personnel...some of these fishermen (in a lot of countries...from The Philippines to the Malaccan Straights and into the Indian Ocean) put to sea in boats that are barely watertight.

Kind of funny how they are ALL Iranian all of a sudden...lol

Well, Iran is in the news now. I think it is customary for ships to pick up survivors. HECK, a lot of movies talk about russians even picking up americans! In the US, there are TONS of stories of ships saving people that were drowning from other ships. STILL, even with that, if you are EVIL, and want to see them DEAD, it figures you would just stand back and laugh as they drowned. So Americans saving Iranians says we have HELPED them AND, in doing so, aren't the evil people that want to see them killed that they heard about in the press.

Reading this, Steve, I'm not sure if you missed my sarcasm or not.
Of course that angle is being "played up"....but probably not by the navy.
There just doing what they've been doing for eons.

It is not now nor ever been ONLY Iranians that are being picked up out there. But you might think that by reading the paper these days.
Maritime forces have their own laws and traditions and one is rescuing anyone in trouble at sea. Doesn't matter what country you are from.

I would hazard to guess that every single day, someone is helped on one of the seas by someones naval forces.

Or it's just PR trying to show us that we are the good guys.
I think this map says different though.
Those stars are U.S. military bases.
Show me how many military bases Iran has around us.

Let's not confuse governments with people. The people of Iran are more pro-US than any other middle eastern country.

...And, it sounds like the US Navy has a "catch and release" program.

You can't sanction Somalia, they have no standing government and an economy the size of a home depot.
