What a sad story... One of my "must visists" whenever I'm in Florida, and Now it's gone.

Sad, but at least it was due to an act of nature, and not man. They should immediately plant a replacement - maybe (if humans are around that long) in 3,500 years from now, someone else will marvel at the new tree.

That was my first thought - was it human-caused. I am so glad that it wasn't. It's amazing that anything can live that long. It is wonderful that many of us got to see it and wonder at it before it was taken. Old growth forests in the US are almost gone. They made excellent wood and were cut down with little thought and much enthusiasm for our own purposes. It would be hoped that such events may draw attention to what we do on our own when we cut down an old growth tree.
