Hong Kong V China: Locust ad inflames tensions - storyful

Hong Kong newspaper ad rails against Chinese 'invasion' - CNN.com

This is getting out of hand. The ad was put up partially in response of Hong Kongers being called "dogs" by a professor in Mainland China a few days earlier. I would have thought this would hate laws in many countries.

Communist chinese would HATE hong kong because it was in foreign hands, and treated as foreign so long, and counter to their ideals! The hong kong people would hate china for being such a threat and so counter. The hostility is understandable EVEN though china would likely not be as well off as it is today if not for hong kong!

Wow, I hadn't read the articles before. They are sick of paying 1Million HK every 18 minutes for non HK citizens. GEE, sounds familiar. 8-? US, Europe, I've heard similar statements from canada, etc... And now HK.

Oh gee, what happened to all of the hand-holding "we are all Chinese" song, dance, and festivities of 1997? Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure it would be advisable for a dragon's tail to pick a fight with its head and the rest of its body.

If people in Hong Kong were that happy about handover in 1997, you would never had that wave of emigration to Canada and other countries. Admittedly, many have gone back now because of higher taxes. The culture in Hong Kong is very different to that mainland China. For a start, the spoken language is totally different. Cantonese is widely regarded as very vulgar language especially suited for swearing by the mandarin speaking mainland Chinese. The tensions have been simmering for years. Among the gripes of Hong Kongers include

    - Mainland women coming to Hong Kong to give births which is the target of the ad. These births now account for more than 50% of all births in Hong Kong.
    - Driving property prices to levels that are out of reach to local people. Some of the transactions are so outrageous that they don't make sense except that money laundering may be involved.
    - Mainland women coming to Hong Kong to work as prostitutes for a few weeks at the time. But this is litte compared to the problem of Hong Kong men keeping mistresses in China.
    - Mainland Chinese given preferential treatment at luxury shops and restaurants. It is quite incredible to see massive queues everyday outside shops such as Prada, Gucci and Channel. Recently, there was a fracas when local people were forbidden to take pictures of the Dolce and Cabanna shop wheres mainland Chinese were.
    - Generally bad manners by mainland Chinese visitors in Hong Kong, such as letting their children to urinate in public places and disregard of no smoking signs etc.

I would agree though that attacks on mainland Chinese are really like biting the hand that feeds it. There are now angry responses in China urging people not to visit Hong Kong. I hope that this ads gets reported and investigated properly.

That's funny. The rudeness I experienced in Hong Kong far surpassed whatever I ever experienced in Mainland China, LOL.

You are right. You can get very bad service in shops and restaurants if you are not perceived to be spending money. You also get the vilest swearing you will ever hear. However, the lack of manners and other anti-social behavior are not generally perceived as being rude in this part of the world. it reflects a lack of education rather than being personally offensive on purpose.
