there is a lot of discussion about
this whole Michael Phelps thing .
Personally I think it is ridiculous
I am curios to hear your opinions
Oh Great Warriors do you think the
treatment is just or not.

There has been a lot of controversy about Michael Phelps .

"Dream it . Believe it. Achieve it . Remember it"

He had a Dream, He Believed it, He Achieved it. We all jumped on and celebrated it like it was our victory . How quick we don't Remember it . When he made a bad decision . Heres my link to a video I shot on my opinion whats yours.

I don't usually pay too much attention to the
Media because...well we know how the media
Works. He is a role model yes but is he not
Allowed to be human? We have all made mistakes
And have done things that I am sure we are
Not proud of. I guess it just goes to shows that
Michael Is part human and part machine. If he keeps
Ingesting those chemicals then he may slow down so
That the rest of the world can keep up with him !

    Cheers

The only thing I have to say is he was supposed to be an example for today's youth that's why he had so many endorsements, his pot smoking wasn't a very good example and lost him millions of dollars.

It's not that I believe smoking pot is the worse thing in the world, been there-done that before some here were even born but for him to smoke it around a bunch of people like he did was idiotic. By the way, I haven't smoke it in about 30 years and haven't drank for 23 years, my personal choice because I like killing myself with these damn cigarettes so well.

By the way, glad you took the advice and moved your thread to off-topic....Welcome to the forum!

I'm kind of surprised about all the attention he is getting since a few years back he had some trouble with alcohol and drunk driving while below the legal drinking age and it seemed he got a free pass.

Personal weed use is nothing compared to endangering lives while driving drunk. I see making the one a big deal and not really mentioning the other kind of lopsided.

The whole media blast made me wonder why we insist that someone with a great talent or skill must always be a perfect person?

The shallow news media only reflects our shallow society that expects a sports icon to also be a role model or a perfect example of youth. To me, the dedication and hard work he has put into being the best at what he does is enough of a role model. When we insist on projecting an image of perfection on an accomplished person, we are asking for a letdown.

Decriminalize that stuff. It's a law which accomplishes nothing intended.

Laws against recreational drugs are nothing more than an income generator for the prison cartels.

Not that it hasn't happened but, I never seen anyone go on a 'Stoned Rage' unlike a 'Drunken Rage' which happens daily.
DUI's should still be prosecuted though.

With heavy use of drugs in out society (read MD) as it is, I'm for 'no holds barred' type Olympics where ALL drugs are allowed. Would be interesting.

We'll soon see guys running 800 meters in like,oh, 35 seconds
And you thought Eric Heiden had some big thighs HA!

For the shotput they would use car engines.

All that money spent to convince people that pot smokers are lazy and can't accomplish anything just went up in smoke (pun intended).

Hey, there's one hell of a strong movement right now to legalize pot - and if that happens our Prison Corporations (yeah, they are CORPORATIONS - slave corps at that) will lose a hell of a lot of money - and people who make your license plates for 50 cents an hour will actually have to be paid minimum wage and benefits for doing so, and that would put money back into the economy instead of the corporations. It would also take a lot of money from our police departments and people might even start using hemp for clothing again and what would happen to DOW if that happened?

Nope - keep the propaganda rolling or the prisons will be asking for a BAIL OUT, too.

    LOL.

Things have really changed. Babe Ruth would get drunk in the dugout during games. Mikey Mantle would go out every night in NY and get plastered. Today, athletes have to be perfect.

And a big hypocrisy is the difference between how we treat athletes vs actors and entertainers. If an athlete partied like Charlie Sheen or Britney Spears has, they'd be run out of they sport. But Hollywood stars get a free pass.

It always amazes me how people can make such a big deal out of famous people. I never understood why fame was anything anyone would want, beyond being known as an Internet marketing guru or something. The movie stars and sports players are monitored too closely...

Although, I think he should be fined or put in jail, whatever would have happened if someone NORMAL had been caught smoking pot.

I think his apologizing to 'everyone' is a crock of cra*.

He smoked some grass. BIG DEAL! In this day and age, why does it even matter?! I would imagine there are some White House staffers and more than a couple senators who toke on a very regular basis and nobody says a word about it because they haven't gotten caught yet. (And when they do, they'll cave just like Phelps and make a hollow, meaningless apology.)

If I were him I would never have apologized for my actions, and I would definitely have told USA Swimming to go to he**. They can stuff their stupid suspension. (Ooo! 90 days! Ow!) He should become a man and stand by his actions.

But he's only going for the money. That's the only reason he caved.

In this world of cell phone cameras and youtube, if you don't want to get caught doing something, don't do it, it's that simple.

Alcohol is legal and cannabis isn't. Such hypocracy.

EDIT: He should be fined or put in jail?! FOR WHAT?! Was he beating on a woman like drunks do? No! Was he doing anything, and I mean ANYthing that was harmful to anyone around him? No! Was he driving under the influence? No! (And thank gawd he didn't shoot anyone like that fella in Reefer Madness!)

The worst he should get is a ticket for violating some archane law about being in possesion of certain amounts of a 'controlled substance', and that's ALL he should get.

This whole thing is much ado about nothing.

Okay, let's look at the other view.

This guy has millions of dollars in endorsements. He is held to a higher standard because of those endorsements, IMHO. If someone if paying you big bucks to be a squeaky clean role model, then you need to be a speaky clean role model.

Where do you draw the line?

"Oh, he only smoked pot. That's not so bad." Okay, so if he had done cocaine, is that the point when you penalize him? Heroin?

If you sign on the dotted line for the big fat check, then you need to keep your nose clean. JMHO

OK. I have to put in my 2 cents worth here.

I can drink a fifth of whiskey and die.
    That's legal.
I can go into the woods and eat as many poison berries as I want and die.
    That's legal.
I can smoke a pound of pot and wake up feeling like a champ and that's illegal.

    (I just lit a cigarette).

And, I couldn't care less if Michael Phelps smokes pot, or A Rod gets a DUI.

    Human? Yes.

Anybody here watch TV? Notice how half the commercials these days are advertising drugs? Most of these drugs have significant side effects, some of them pretty serious. People have died taking some of them. But they're pushed and pushed hard into every American home every single night, with full governmental, corporate, and societal approval.

But if someone takes a toke, suddenly they've made a "mistake" and they deserve to be punished, because they're not being a "good role model"? Why is it considered perfectly normal and acceptable to take a drug like Viagra (and advertise it on mainstream network TV), but privately smoking a natural weed like pot is considered wrong and bad in so many ways, to the point where terminally ill people are thrown in prison for smoking it because they just want to be free from pain while they're waiting to die?

What a huge, steaming pile of hypocritical bullshit. It's also certifiably insane.

I love those commercials where they spend 45 of the 60 seconds listing the side effects.

This is from the Bureau of Mortality Statistics for 1988 listing deaths per year and the cause.

        340,000 to 425,000 Tobacco
150,000+ Alcohol (not including 50% of all highway
deaths and 60% of all murders)
        180 to 1,000+ Aspirin
1,000 to 10,000 Caffeine ( from stress, ulcers, and
        triggering irregular heartbeats)
50 Theopoline (Pharmaceutical drug prescribed for asthma)

        0 Marijuana

And people wonder why I've smoked for 40 years and have been an advocate for legalization for the last 30.

          You gotta love stats...

          How about this one:

Deaths from violent crimes - 17,800
          Deaths from hospital/doctor mistakes - 178,000

These are from 2006 and they seem to indicate that it is more dangerous to visit a medical facility than it is to smoke pot.

I never understood that. Is it a requirement? Sometimes it's like a commercial against the medicine.
