  • Luv this post
It is very true.I've always worked retail and never did any sitting.I am so used to standing that when I do sit for any length of time it is very uncomfortable. When I'm on the computer I find my self standing quite often. Yoga is my preference to stay long and lean or a good combo is yoga Pilates

  • This should be a STICKY. Seriously. It's extremely important information.

After all, if you don't have your health, your aren't going to be able to implement any of the other information you gather here at WF.
  • I saw this a while back and now fter having to sit on my butt all day at work, I have a tendency to stand all night when I get home. Whether playing with the kids or watching tv I stay on my feet as much as possible. Drive the wife nuts....
  • OK, going outside for a walk and some sunshine.

  • I'm a gonner if I don't make some changes!
  • Wow... thanks, Damz... powerful stuff! I'm gonna go take a walk around the neighborhood before I read any more comments.
  • Awhile back David Risley (not affiliate with him in any way, just like his stuff) wrote a blog post/video about purchasing a "standing desk" that he uses...and I'm sure comfort & health are a couple of reasons why!

Makes all the sense in the world.
  • I heard about this a while back but this puts it in complete perspective. I will take your advice.

  • Thanks for posting. Probably something few people even know about, or think about. I didn't realize everything in the covered in the letter. Some food for thought. I'll be getting up a little more often.
  • Sitting increases risk of death by 40%?

Guess standing will give me a better chance of living forever.

Actually, your risk of death is 100%.

Marketers actually give seminars on how to use silly scare-tactic meant-to-go-viral infographics like this. Apparently few people question the assertions because the graphics look authoritative.

That's what happens when you raise a generation on visual media and not critical thinking.

Sitting is not evil. It doesn't kill you. Do what works best for you, not what some agenda-driven marketer tells you.

  • We're all doomed.

Unless we all get treadmills with a mounted laptop.

I thought of this as a joke originally, but after Googling, I realised it's not a unique idea at all LOL.

I'm about as shocked as when I discovered that the "wake-n-bacon" alarm was actually real.

I use my iPad 2 on the treadmill. Works great. You're probably going to be just reading, anyway, unless you're adept at typing with one finger.

  • Sitting straight, feet planted on the floor, tummy tucked in, shoulders back, using the proper chair, leave the donuts alone, leave the sugar out of the coffee, that should help. After work go for a walk, at lunch time go for a walk, after dinner go for a walk. You should do fine!
  • That's outrageous - I won't stand for it
  • I just converted to a standing desk this year. Best decision!! Made the desk from found items at home, placed a gel mat in my walking area (between 2 computers, Mac and PC).

Side benefit~~the exercise back and forth is helping me slim up! Yes!
  • LegitIncomes, that is Awesome!!! I just entered a team to raise money for diabetes via a bike ride ~~ and I don't ride a bike (tiny detail I forgot to mention to the team). What a great way to get in shape for doing good, while still making my online $.
    Too cool!
  • After reading this post, I have just broken 1 leg of my chair. That means I'll be unable to sit for long
  • Thanks for the reminder.

I didn't realize how out of shape I was until I walked 9 holes of golf with my sister. I was exhausted.

I do get up several times during the day, walk around, stretch, and take breaks but that's not enough. I need to start taking walks and exercising.
  • I always lie down when I work. Sitting is to formal.
  • I've heard this before and I make it a point to get up and walk around every hour. Usually I just drink a lot of water so I have to get up to go.

I'm curious about this though - what about people who are wheelchair bound?

  • The universe is definitely trying to tell me something. I just had this conversation with my 74 year old uncle (who is in great shape), he was scolding me for working too long without a break. Now I see this. Ok Ok...message received.
  • Sitting for long periods of time definitely has an adverse affect on your body. I'm getting pain on one side of my body for sitting too long. Now I try to get up every hour for 15 - 20 minutes.

Letting kids sit for too long playing video games is also a bad idea. I limit my kids to only a few hours of game play. Don't want them to grow up lazy.
  • very impressive information. thanks to you
  • This was a superb thread dude...

I never knew that I'm risking my life because I mostly sit and do my work

  • 97.4% of all statistics are pulled from someone's backside.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I just hate these kinds of statistics. Plenty of people in great shape, who didn't sit much, and lived a healthy lifestyle, died at a young age. It makes me wonder why so many of my friends and relatives that lived healthy are gone, and I'm not?

According to statistics, I must already be dead. I'm 69 with diabetes, which cut 7 years off my life. I'm left handed, another 10 years off. I sit most of the day, however much time that's worth. I'm overweight and my diet isn't the best. Maybe tomorrow will be my day. Wait, I think I said that last year, and even a few years before that.

I hope all you younger people have a long life. However, old age is not always good. My grandmother lived to be a hundred. I was all she had left. The last years of her life weren't enjoyable, even though she wasn't ill. No thanks. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

  • I actually find that my muscles are more sore after sitting all day than they are after I go for a run! My New Year's resolution was to stop ditching my morning run because I've got "too much work to do". It all can wait 30 or 40 minutes while I get some exercise, some sunshine, and some stress-busting
  • What a load of crock.

The real risk here is with the connection between sitting for long and being obese. Being obese is not good for you, we know that and sure enough a majority of obese people are not on their feet all day. duh!

They then tell us 'Sitting wrecks your body!?!?!?!!!?!!!'...

As soon as you sit 'electricity shuts off in your legs', 'cholesterol drops' 'enzymes reduce'.....

So that would mean sleeping is wrecking out bodies too? Or you should never sit down, at all.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Thanks for this! Excessive sitting has long been a concern of mine and I've even worked for periods of time standing at a tall table I have in my home. Still, I sit for far too long each day and this post helps remind me of the dangers involved. Gotta move more!

On a sidenote, I've recently started enjoying a minimum of two hours worth of sunshine and fresh air each day. One hour each morning and another in the afternoon (with sunscreen and a big floppy hat, of course, lol) has helped to increase my energy and has strengthened my immune system (husband recently battled a doozey of a cold, which I normally would have contracted, too).

Working from home has its perks, but a lack of attention to our health can cause major problems in our lives.

    Thanks, again, for the reminder!
  • Apparently prolonged standing will kill you too

There is literally nothing we can do now-a-days
    • Perhaps a balance of both is key?

      Two words:

      Standing desk.

Sit down at your high chair when you need, and then stand up when you need.
  • Either way, this should be in OFF TOPIC.

    • I have installed WorkRave on my pc. (It's free.)

It automatically reminds you to take a 30-second break every 10 minutes, and it reminds you to take a 10 minute break every hour. (You can also adjust the times.)

I have an aerobic step near my desk, so that I can do some exercise during my breaks.

I have lost 16 pounds so far, and the only thing that I've done is to cut out sodas and add this little bit of exercise to my regimen.

      I highly recommend it.

  • Cool Stuff. Simple advice. My mom's voice still rings in my ears, "Go Outside And Play!"

Just cause we're adults doesn't mean anything has changed. Go walk, swim, throw a frisbee, play volleyball, do something, just move, have fun.... every day. You'll feel better and be healthier as a result!
  • I put a board over the arms on my treadmill and set my laptop on that. I can surf at 3 mph, write posts at 2 mph and do ad design at 1 mph. I try to spend at least on hour a day walking - I don't always do it - but I know I should.
  • I need a higher desk!

    • Yeah , Airbus has read the report and they love it . No more seats . Only standing room . More passengers .

  • So, if I stand up and go for a cigarette just now, does that make things ok?

    • Wow so glad I am an active person. I'm kind of surprised that a 90 degree angle isn't the best way to sit. We are always taught to sit up straight. Guess that's not the case. Thanks for the great information.
    • Of course sitting down is killing us all. It's a slow killer and we barely notice we are dying... a little pain here, a little pain there, and we sit down all over again. Time for me to do my daily exercises

      Bernard
    • Very informative and shocking. It never crossed my mind that sitting could be so dangerous. I will try my best to walk 2 miles every day starting tomorrow. I really appreciate the article. Would it be ok if I contact medicalBillingCoding.org and ask them is I can use it in one of my businesses? Not yet decided but I am interested in the lose weight industry. Thanks again.
  • This could a Google-sponsored campaign, they cannot get rid of the spam so they are trying to stop it at the source, by frightening people into giving up IM. :-D

There seems to be much contradicting evidence, the people with lowest life expectancies are those from the poorest African nations.

While the Japanese/Hong Kong Chinese live the longest, see the list here:

List of countries by life expectancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The average life expectancy in the 1900's was around 70 not including infant mortality.

    1800's it was 41
    1700's it was 37
    1600's it was 35
  • Haha, good one.

I work in the exercise / public health field, and I have to agree: it's 100% true and backed by scientific studies.

What many colleagues and I do is work standing or on a stability ball.

It's hard the first few days, but after a while your legs (or core) get much stronger and you can stay up all day.

Helps me keep my focus and fall asleep faster at night, too.

    • [1] reply

    • Yes Carl I had an idea those posters were going to be backed with scientific proof, bummer something else to worry about.

I would like to see a scientific study done for the effects on life expectancy caused by increasing a persons anxiety levels by telling them they are going to die more quickly than they thought.

What's this about standing on a ball, all day? Wow! you have got some balls to do that probably big rubber ones.

Do you wear a crash helmet whilst working
  • Wow this article was very informative. This isn't great news for all of us internet marketers. I guess I will have to start adding break times into my work to stretch and stuff.
  • I just called my husband into my office to read this post!

We are in the process of rigging up a stand for my keyboard and a stand for my monitor so that I can switch back and forth from sitting and standing while working.

I previously worked as a medical transcriptionist, so I've been sitting a whole lot longer than my Internet marketing career....YIKES!

Gotta discipline myself to switch to standing position every 30 minutes!

Thanks for taking the time to post this!!

    Have a great weekend.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I can't help but to sit. I'm 6'5", my ceiling is 6'4".
  • Hoax.

Sitting makes you only burn 1 calorie per hour? Obvious BS to anybody who has had any kind of nutritional eductaion. You burn more than that when you sleep.

  • Its pretty nice info with a very attractive design !

    Thanks for sharing it buddy!
  • Drink Green tea too!!
  • Lots of people can't get up and they've already beat the percentages quoted here. That 40% is a little high. Lol
  • That percentage is a little high
  • Time to adjust the chair to 135 (where's that degree symbol?)
  • Don't know if it kills you, but yep, it does make your muscles feel pretty miserable.

You can rig up MS Outlook or use an hour timer to remind you to get up and walk/exercise for 5 minutes every hour.

Your muscles will thank you for it. Heck, that's why I have an exercise bike in back on my computer chair...
  • As a former personal trainer I dislike sitting down for long period of time. I came up with a way to avoid this with a simple exercise ball.

Every 45 minutes I change my seating position from sitting down to semi standing with the ball placed on the chair. This means I have to support my own back (engage core muscles) and challenges me a little to keep my balance.

I rotate this sequence every 45 minutes or so.

I also changed my comfortable chair for a cheap plastic chair so that it gets uncomfortable after a a few hours. The idea is to remind in multiple ways to get out of my chair.

I wrote a detailed blog post about it here (including a picture of my chair and ball)
  • WOW! Interesting post. I now feel very strange while sitting down! Got a big urge to stand up and type this message.

I love the design as well - as a graphic designer myself I really like it!
  • I agree... but I love my chair...
  • I get up every hour and have a stepper in my home office and do 100 steps on that, plus so some stretching and then take my dogs around my garden for a walk. (I am one 1 1/2 acres). then back to the desk.

Also guys you can purchase a product called circulation booster, and plug that in under your desk. It massages your feet and gets the blood moving through your feet and leg muscle etc. It is fabulous, use that 3-4 times a day for 30 minutes whilst at your computer, doesn't interfere with what you are doing. Also works on your reflexology points in your feet. Amazing less stress!

I have to do this as I suffer from Fibromyalgia so if I sit for a while, I get stiff and the pain in unbearable.

So go for it guys, what's the use of making huge amounts of money, if your backside is too big to fit into the car of your dreams, or your too sick to enjoy it!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I am going to buy the circulation booster - thanks so much for taking the time to post this. I needed something that would also make a difference while I was seated....awesome!!

    Have a wonderful day!

  • A lot of correlatory points in that infographic. It says that sitting kills you because you get fatter, but it's getting fatter that kills you, not sitting down.
