Some of the great quotes on freedom:

"Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one." - Benjamin Franklin

He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from opposition; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach himself. ~Thomas Paine

History does not teach fatalism. There are moments when the will of a handful of free men breaks through determinism and opens up new roads. ~Charles de Gaulle

Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed - else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower

Post quotes you like that are about freedom.

            Personal liberty is the paramount essential to human dignity and human happiness ~ Edward Bulwer-Lytton

            Since the general civilizations of mankind I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations ~ James Madison

    Is that the same Bulwer-Lytton who wrote "It was a dark and stormy night"?

    That James Madison quote carries a lot of weight. It has always been my thought that subversion and manipulation of a system is much more effective than violent revolution to effect change...
    assimilation, not annihilation.

    You reminded me of another favorite quote:

    Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.

    "I speak to my people, and I speak in my people's name to the masters of my people.

    I say to my people that they are holy, that they are august, despite their chains. That they are greater than those that hold them, and stronger and purer. That they have but need of courage, and to call on the name of their God, God the unforgetting, the dear God that loves the peoples for whom He died naked, suffering shame.

    And I say to my people's masters: Beware. Beware of the thing that is coming. Beware of the risen people, who shall take what ye would not give. Did ye think to conquer the people, or that law is stronger than life and than men's desire to be free?"

          LOL but I really wonder if anyone ever really wants to go to jail.

          I guess they made the best of it though.

      That is really a great message, especially the end about "if big business closes the door on the little guy". That reminds me of another post I read today on social networks about 75-85% of people in the US who are employed are employed by small business.

        Live free or die (New Hampshire's official state motto). It originated from a toast written by General John Stark. His full toast was "Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils".

        Too bad so few of us Americans have a mindset remotely close to that these days.

      This is not a "freedom" quote but I was reminded of it when I read the above:

      First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
      Because I was not a Socialist.

      Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
      Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

      Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
      Because I was not a Jew.

      Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

          It is such a powerful idea.

          I was watching a news program last night (John Stossel), and it was stated that 80,000 pages of new Federal regulations were written last year. Most of us simply don't care about things like that, as long as we are not directly affected in a negative way.

      William Wallace's Speech before the Battle of Stirling in the movie Braveheart

      Sons of Scotland, I am William Wallace.

      Soldier responds:
      William Wallace is seven feet tall.

      Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse.

      I AM William Wallace!

      And I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny.

      You have come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What would you do without freedom? Will you fight?

      Soldier responds:
      Fight? Against that? No, we will run; and we will live.

      Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live -- at least a while.

      And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... our freedom!

    I do not choose to be a common man,

    I do not wish to be a kept citizen.
    Humbled and dulled by having the

    I want to take the calculated risk;
    To dream and to build.
    To fail and to succeed.
    I refuse to barter incentive for a dole;
    I prefer the challenges of life
    To the guaranteed existence;
    The thrill of fulfillment
    To the stale calm of Utopia.
    I will not trade freedom for beneficence
    Nor my dignity for a handout
    I will never cower before any master
    Nor bend to any threat.
    It is my heritage to stand erect.
    Proud and unafraid;
    To think and act for myself,
    To enjoy the benefit of my creations
    And to face the world boldly and say:
    This, with God’s help, I have done!

    To me, I believe this involves freedom. Especially in the current world economic mess we have right now. You would think if there weren't such a thing as billionaires or millionaires, a bit of the wealth could be spread around a bit more. I know people will disagree, but when I first read this, I thought wouldn't it be great. But then we have to wake up and smell the coffee.

      This extract from Robert Laurence Binyon's poem:

      They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
      Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
      They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
      They fell with their faces to the foe.

      They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
      Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

          I have long found Jefferson's quotes about freedom to be ironic, hypocritical and empty considering he owned hundreds of slaves during his lifetime. This particular quote is even more so. I bet he did prefer "peaceful slavery" when it came to his own slaves. Jefferson was a brilliant man in many ways, but also very flawed in others.
