While I don't expect the female IM'rs on here to say yeah to this, how about you guys? I myself tend to go 2-3 days sometimes without showering, by choice, because i'm either in the zone or figure since I don't smell bad i'm good now if I had no choice, that would really suck.

A few months back, I did the no-soap thing, but I still scrubbed down each day. My wife said she hadn't really noticed during the day, but that she was pregnant and had noticed something when she was very close to me in bed. (She sometimes sleeps with her head on my chest.)

I am the first to admit I am OCD about cleanliness.
I wash my hands too many times a day to count and I HAVE to shower daily.
When I had my recent operation and I was in the hospital for an extended period of time,Not being able to shower drove me up the wall.

Granted, there were times an young attractive nurse would come in and use a washckloth to wipe me down and sometimes wash my hair, but it just isn't the same as a nice steamy shower!

No way. I hate being grubby. My wife sure wouldn't stand for it if I was reeking of days-old BO. Besides that, I have to carry my baby around a lot. It would be cruel to subject him to smelliness. Would you like it if King Kong picked you up and carried you around and had bad BO, bad breath or suchlike?

I can go a couple days between showers in the winter.
But I live alone and in a normal week have very little human contact.

LOL, interesting topic! Definitely one for the guys!

We have a water well system that always flows in, but you have to be careful not to use too much water too fast. Has been this way since we bought the place more than 21 years ago. As a result, we have always been conservative with our water use, spreading out shower days, laundry days, etc. so we don't tax the system and run short of water.

So ... by choice ... I shower only a few times a week unless I am doing physical labour or extra exercising or something out of the ordinary.

We had well problems last week, so we were without running water for almost a week, meaning I did not shower for that week! Miraculously, I did not suffer from unusual levels of BO!

It's great to have the water running again ... and we hope to one day soon hook into the town water system. (By then, the cost of water will probably by high, so we will STILL have to be conservative! Just can't win.)

GT I can relate to all that
When I was a kid we had well water here and I still have a septic tank.
That may still be part of the reason I don't find taking a shower everyday in the winter necessary.
I still use the outdoors to urinate most times to cut back on the septic tank usage, and I keep my showers short for the same reason.
O.K. that was more information then anyone wanted

Well holy jeez - is that why you spend so much time around back in the gardens?

Actually, people aren't supposed to bathe (or shower) or shower every day. In the summer it's more necessary than in winter, too, as Thom already mentioned. And with the pollution we have now you want to get that crud off your skin, but all in all, every two or three days is supposed to be sufficient - on the off days "whore" baths should suffice.

A lot of countries think we are total freaks with our necessities for daily bathing. Maybe we are, I don't know - but I do know that indoor plumbing sure beats creek water.

LOL Alexa - great minds think alike. I have my book and ash tray parked appropriately.

          Now you're catching on
Heck last winter when we had snow I even shovelled a path off the driveway in back to have a place to go
In the winter I do have a tendency to take a bath instead of a shower every couple of weeks or so.
With the shower I can get in and out pretty quick and leave the bathroom door open so the bathroom stays warm.
When I do a bath I close the door and plug in the space heater. Then I get a hot cup of tea, roll a fatty and grab my cigs.
I'll fill the tub with real hot water and moisturising, foaming milk bath, or bubble bath if you will. 10 minutes in I'm so relaxed I need a life jacket to keep from drowning

            I like it Thom!

You reminded me of a piece I wrote last winter when the frigid weather was unbearable and I was counting down the days to my Florida get away.

            Winter Strikes Again

So it started just about an hour ago.

Another 8 inches of snowfall in progress...Why couldn't it wait until I left for Florida in 12 days?

This cold damp weather chills me to the bones and even a crackling fire burning in the family room fireplace sending out warmth and dancing shadows on the walls can't soothe the chill that has grasped my bones with a grip rivaling that of the grim reaper.

The Jacuzzi tub calls my name beckoning me to bring my scented candles, my bubble bath and moisturizing body wash to get lost in the smooth silky suds that mix with the hot water enveloping me in a cloud of relaxing luxury. I cannot resist the invitation and obediently as if in a hypnotic state, collect the needed paraphernalia including my favorite romantic, emotion evoking DVDs.

The heat produced from the hot water slowly penetrates through every chilled muscle, the bubbles warmly caressing and moisturizing my winter battered skin, the music warming my heart and soul as I slip into a state of delectable bliss. Ahhh! It almost holds this bitter winter cold at bay, but alas...my bones are still held prisoner to that chill that clutches them in a vice like grip.

Hold out just a little longer I whisper to them, less than two weeks and you'll get the escape you long for, the Florida sun, the antidote you hunger for, the cure you crave!

Have I mentioned I'm tired of this frigid Michigan winter weather, yet?

Just a northern girl trying to hold on the best she can until her sweet escape to a sunny paradise...I can't wait!!

Yes indeed ... as Hoffnung said, there are three things you can do in the bath that you can't do in the shower: the first is read; the second is smoke; and the third is get wet all over.

It depends how bloody cold it is outside.

If it's below freezing, I'll whack a saucepan on the calor gas stove filled with water and give myself a stripped wash.

If the weather is okay on the other hand, I'll park up the stealth camper van, boil up a few saucepans of water, stick it all in another water container, plug in my 12 volt shower unit to the main battery, stick the shower suction cup on the outside of the van and take a shower (with my shorts still on of course) at the side of the road.

The shower is basically a small pump which draws the water up and it comes out would you believe it, out of the nozzle at the top and if that doesn't work my fall back emergency shower is one of these...

Fill it up with water, chuck it on top of the roof of the van, go off for the day, come back and it's toasty warm from the sun, hook it up and stand underneath to give yourself a quick head to toe wash.

Home is where the heart is...

        Cheers!

That's awesome! Thanks for sharing, very clever idea with the camper van, never thought of that, I always wanted to travel one day, and I had no idea they made mini showers like that, that small anyway. The missus wouldn't go for it, but i'd definitely try it out. For some reason your post made me think of the TV show lost, I don't why as this is unrelated but I was thinking for a fridge on the show they could stick a container in the water(since water is usually cool/cold) or digg a hole and stick it in there! For a shower they'd have to get pretty creative, maybe boil water with fire and use a bamboo type deal for the overhead, I guess For you guys that said showers don't reach everywhere get one of those shower heads you can unhook and move around, like a sink hose, I have one and it rocks!

Here you go, this is what I use...

And for heating my water up if not on the Calor gas stove, I'll heat it up on my woodburning stove instead - a recycled gas bottle with a flue coming out the top of it, similar to one of these...

(That's NOT my arse btw before anyone asks!)

Of course if one does want a proper bath the easiest thing to do is to get a green wheelie bin, one of these...

Put a wooden chair inside, drill 2 holes one on each side of the wheelie bin, connect army hose (steel reinforced hose 1 1/2" diameter) into each hole in the side sections. One side the hose goes to an old washing machine motor, more army hose which then connects to an 8' cast iron radiator, hose out the other end connecting back to the wheelie bin.

Get a good bonfire going and chuck the radiator on top of the fire. Fill the bin with water. Switch on the generator to power the washing machine motor and you've got an instant hot tub. We used to use them on the road protest camps, they work a treat. Plus you can get 2 people in one wheelie bin for a good cozy fit whilst the water swirls around and around in circles getting hotter and hotter by the hour.

Add bubble bath and Bob's your uncle.

            Tickety boo.

That's true Steve, and that's not even taking into account the dirt, dust and grime your skin is subjected to as well, during any given day. Combine all that grit with the oils you mentioned clogging your pores, and you've got some major skin problems.

As for me, I just feel gross if I'm not clean. I also feel gross if I don't shave regularly too, but I know that in some cultures, under arm hair on women is attractive. But that is another topic, entirely. :p

I was on one forum, and a polish person spoke about a type of condition her mother had. I forget the name, but it is actually called POLISH(as in from poland). It is created by virtually NEVER washing the hair.

Although they somehow think it is healthier, it is nothing of the sort, and the kind of thing lice thrive on. When I was young, and apparently even NOW, some in the lower grades talked about girls generally having "cooties". They have made games around it, etc... Personally, I always viewed that as "the boogey man", a sort of myth. Being curious, I did look it up on the internet. Apparently, cooties refers to lice and girls might be more likely to have them due to long hair and infrequent washing.

            LOL Steve!

I love the way your mind works. I never would have thought to do research on "cooties".

But you are right about the games. When I was little I had a game called Cooties and the object of the game was to build your cooties first by getting all of their legs on their bodies and well now, after I read your post, I feel violated that I was encouraged to play with cooties haha!

That isn't accurate, Steve. Lice actually do not do well at all on dirty hair, especially oily hair. Lice thrive on clean hair and scalps.

I rarely shower more frequently than every other day, and occasionally will go an extra day between there. I work in my office all day, not out doing manual labor. I also don't sweat a lot unless it's really hot.

People today have become obsessed with feeling "clean" but it's a type of brainwashing, really. If you wear a pair of jeans more than an hour, then they need to be washed. Have to kill the germs so every cleaning product in the house is antibacterial. It's nuts, is what it is.

We're actually making ourselves more susceptible to germs and bacteria by trying so hard to eradicate them.

Hi Tina, long time no talk to.

I have no research to back this up, but way back when the kids were little, my youngest daughter contracted lice after a weekend camp, and our doctor told us there was no evidence to support that they like clean or dirty hair better and getting them had nothing to do with the degree of personal hygiene.

He said they don't have a preference and aren't that picky when choosing their hosts, however there is evidence that they prefer long hair and are therefore 3 to 4 times more common in girls.

Believe it or not, I have actually extensively researched lice. I had one child that would bring it home almost as soon as she got rid of them. I mean, they LOVED her. After trying everything the doctor recommended, I went into researcher mode and dug deep. Finally stopped the cycle and learned how to prevent them and she never caught them again.

Anyway, it's not so much the clean or dirty, but the oiliness of the hair. The oils make it hard for the lice to breathe and if the hair is oily enough, it prevents them from taking hold as the oil smothers them. When I say clean or dirty, I'm referring to really dirty, not just not shampooing daily.

Your doctor is right that it has nothing to do with personal hygiene, though. I never heard anything about a preference to long hair, but long hair does make them easier to transfer onto a person.

Anyhoo, that's more than most people ever wanted to hear about THAT nasty subject... lmao.

And that is the whole of the truth, Tina. People are so freaked over a little bacteria that probably wouldn't even be harmful if they had enough Vitamin D3 and sunshine produced sulfurs in their skin that they will use those toxin bacteria killing soaps that absorb and cause liver damage. Go figure....but we have to be CLEAN. One summer day on a busy street in France would kill most Americans - even if it was only the garlic that got them.

Garlic is getting more popular in the US. I have only been around a couple dozen french people, that I know of, and maybe only a half dozen were actually from FRANCE, but they seemed clean enough. Maybe the stereotype just isn't true anymore.

The French aren't dirty. They don't bathe as often as we do - but who in the world does? They clean though. If you get right down to it, they use biddees (not sure how to spell that) and are probably cleaner in ways than we are.

The garlic comment was because the French eat so much garlic that you can smell it on the streets if they are crowded. I love garlic so I was able to fit in without issue. I saw some American tourists wrinkling their noses though.

Yeah, I figured you meant that. Thatis why I said garic was STARTING to get more popular in the US. For FOOD, it has been used for hundreds of years but NOW, some people SWEAR on it. BTW I had a german teacher once, from germany, that said she and her friends didn't like the smell that came from some people that ate garlic. So the wrinkling is NOT only from americans!

The oils are essential, obviously too much oil is a problem but so is washing it away too often. All about balance.

Are you one of those people who thinks you should wash your face 10 times a day and you won't have any acme???

Some Salon owner told me he only washes his hair once a month. Hard to believe. I wash mine quite often because it gets oily fast but it's different for each person.

My face used to be oily when younger and now it's closer to drier so have to moisturize often.

Dirt and grime aren't half as bad for you as the toxic crap that is in our air now that gets on the skin. Skin is absorbent and all that pollution that lands on the skin is pure poison, so it's more important now to wash it off regularly than it was decades back when the world was a relatively clean place.

Soap - soaps without toxic ingredients that is - are not bad for your skin. Soap is not meant to condition skin, it's meant to clean it. Clean you skin well, then wash off the soap well. Then moisturize with a non-toxic moisturizer and you shouldn't have problems.

Tina, What I mean by thrve on that is NOT so much that it is clean or not, but that drty hair means it hasn't been CLEANED, giving the lice a chance to settle and lay nits. Whether the oily hair is bad for them or whatever doesn't make sense. There ARE stories about prisoners putting hair in pathways to keep guards from staying, etc...

And nits are hard to get rid of. If oil got rid of them so well, such things would be easy.
Oh well, i never had lice, and was only curious.

I guarantee you it doesn't stay clean longer. But there ARE various conditioners some blacks use. SORRY, I mention blacks here because they ARE made for, and often BY blacks! Soul train had some of them as sponsors, BET has some such sponsors, and the RICH JERK portrayed as eddie murphies competitor in "coming to america" is even shown to have gotten rich by selling such products! Anyway, I'm sure THOSE things generally need to stay in, so users would be less likely to wash their hair so often. And not ALL blacks use them, but obviously a LOT, MALE and female, do!

from Exactly why do black or biracial people wash their hair once a week? - Yahoo! Answers

"Speaking for the black girls, it's not recommended that we wash our hair everyday, because it'll just wash away the very little natural oils that we already have in our hair. Our hair isn't as oily as non black people's hair. Therefore, we can get away with only washing it once a week, and it has no effect on our hair. I'm not sure how biracial girls are, but even some of them I heard can't go once a week without washing their hair. Everyone's different though. "
