Self publishing good first step into book industry?

Before internet marketing came into my life one of my big interests was writing fiction. I don't expect to actually write a novel within the next few years. Instead, maybe I can try my hand at short stories and publishing them online-possibly for kindle. Then if I decide to take it a step further I can see if a publishing house would be willing to consider my work regardless of having a history of self publishing.

My interests are in sci-fi and fantasy, though it seems lately that my ideas are moving toward the action thriller/horror genres. From a market perspective is this is a good time to get into self publishing? Posting stories online has been huge for a long time-just look at writing.com and fanfiction.net-but are readers willing to take the increased chance that their money will be spent on poorly written stories?

    write for free, create a blog and write your uber short stories on there to check interest levels.

    if you get good response publish short stories on kindle, give your blog readers a review copy to chew into and leave review on amazon.

    that should get the ball rolling and getting more ppl to part with their money.
