What technologies do you think will be available in 10 years time?
#future forecasting #future technology #futurology #technologies #technology
  • Are you speaking of...what we would like to see?

Or what we will probably get?

    Futuristic? Or futile?

If we are going for futuristic, I vote for a pill that regenerates tissue, organs, and limbs

and if we can't do that...some really totally integrated prosthetics...Terminator style -

Oh yeah, and completely clean and renewable (and cost free) energy...

We will more than likely be dealing with petabytes and exabytes by then, so what a "computer" could do is open for suggestion...

If "Skynet" doesn't get us first...

Printing human organs is actually happening now in private test, it's still very new & still needs a lot more advancements.

Fast forward the video to 11:05

In 10 years? How about nanotech that provides microscopic computer processors for a variety of uses - medical, technical, etc.

Also, cars that drive themselves. I don't like the thought of that, but I can see it coming!

Maybe less than 10 years, but fingerprint access to houses, computers, and cars.

They already do have that for computers, Jonathan.

My son's new laptop does have that feature.

Well, some companies, like IBM, DID include readers with laptops. They had a little area you could put your finger on to be scanned, And you could use it to log you in, or even encrypt files. STILL, it never seemed to catch on, from what I could see. TODAY, THE premier method of login security is using a "token". The main company that produces it is RSA. Basically, if you know the password, you can NOT log in! If someone emails you the tokens value, you can NOT log in! If you have the token, and only the regular password, you can NOT log in.

They have a token that displays a number that changes abut every minute or so. You have to act like you are logging in the normal way, but enter the number from a token for that account and a special code that is tied to it. NO biometrics!

I know GT, my son uses his pointer finger and I always have to wonder how precise those things are.

I mean what if he sliced his finger. Would he be locked out until it healed, or what if after it healed, it left a scar?

Fingerprint readers HAVE to be imprecise! There are TRILLIONS of potential points. The odds of that matching even the SAME person are INCREDIBLY slim! As you said, a cut, or a scar, growth, dirt, tanning, etc... would change it. Even a difference in pressure, or positioning. What they did was categorize certain patterns, and use THOSE. So a swirl is a swirl. So those trillions are reduced to maybe 10. That's one reason that I doubt they will get THAT popular.

I think in 10 years time all of the people that are gung-ho about 'the smaller the better' will be ten years older and we'll see a trend that enlarges things like the Ipad--which will of course be far more advanced then than it is now.

As an aging Baby Boomer, I hear ya on that one! lol

However, personally, I think technology will be going "internal".

I see a time coming when computer technology will be further miniaturized and will be implanted with direct brain interfaces (or whatever they will call it). We will "see" our screens in our heads and will only have to "think" our commands to make the system work.

Communication will be the same: we will "think" our connections to other people and will "hear" their voices in our heads, lol. (Seriously.)

I forgot what I did with a link if I have one, but I think it is in Australia they have just gotten processors down to atom size proportions, and see chips that make current nano-tech look big. This story broke within the last few days, so if anyone saw it maybe you have the link...

As for connections GT, they might just be more ethereal than ethernet...if we can get processor size that small, it will just be implanted..

We already could make some things smaller, but our physical restrictions like fingers and eyes already prevent some devices from going smaller...

The Google glasses I put up the other day is a good example of a stop-gap system to get there. We just need more practical ways to control the systems, but they are getting there -

Smaller problems will get bigger, and bigger problems will get smaller -

As far as security, as Terra surmises, what happens to an injured fingerprint, or optic nerve?

Who knows? Maybe it will be our computer login is our DNA string?
And our password is one piece of that string puzzle no one else can hack? (easily)

Maybe a "computer virus" will actually be a real virus attacking your implanted chip!

        (just all speculation, of course...)

Here's something I thought of years ago:

Basically all a person has to do to order something online is to “Text” a number and then their product will be paid for (automatically) and it will be delivered to them (automatically). I guess you could call it “Phone Shopping.”

(Now that I've said it, it's probably already happening : )

YEP, they do THAT also! In every way imaginable! For example, you can aim some phones at a barcode, and have it order based on that! Payment can be made by predefined credit card, account, or even billed by your phone company! That HAS been out quite a while. AND, for like a decade, or so , some vending machines will EVEN dispense based on credit paid for via PHONE!

This is already being worked on. I have friends in Cambridge who are working on this right now, in fact I was asked a while ago to join the team at one of the universities there.

Unfortunately the pay couldn't match anywhere near what I can earn working for myself, so I let the opportunity pass.

Interesting, but it implies that tilting to have stability in cornering is such a new concept. I didn't think it was a new concept DECADES ago when I heard italy was doing that to get more speed, out of older tracks that they have laid down, for the eurorail.

To reasonably do that, they would FIRST have to make a battery that is like 30+ TIMES more efficient. The efficiency of batteries has been overlooked WAY too long. What sense does it make to have a conversation piece(the ONLY reason to have such a device) when the phone dies just after they notice it? I don't know if they will EVER do such a thing. NOT because it isn't possible. It's possible NOW! They probably won't do it because it is little more than a fad, and people would prefer a phone they can USE!

There IS a reason why people care about talk and standby time. EVENTUALLY, if they don't already, they will probably have screen and process time ALSO. I once bought an MP3 player that had maybe 15 minutes of screen time. I almost returned it until I realized the auto-off was OFF by default! The process time was a FAR more reasonable 50 hours! How would YOU like an MP3 player that you had to charge to simply learn how to lose and THEN had to charge for maybe 5 songs?

OK, a SUPER BULLY! OR, if everyone could, nothing would be safe! NO LOCKS, or any valuables! IMAGINE someone trying to get the back off of a radio or a rolex watch and destroying the object! YIKES! To fly at supersonic speed, the lungs would have to be different, for starters!

Actually, considering that we are now in jeopardy of running out of a few elements that are needed to build technology (copper for one) within the next 10 years, I'm thinking we'll have about 1/2 available that we have now in 10 years unless they come up with something you can use in substitute for copper and a few REMs.

We can recycle copper. Still, copper is really not THAT necessary. Of course, we ARE running low on other things thatare not so easily replaced.

Copper is extremely necessary for our way of life, Steve. I'm on low bandwidth or I'd go get a few links for ya. Sure there are technologies that do not use it = but without our way of life intact, there won't be much more technology forthcoming.

Recycling yes - but we have over 7 bil people on earth now. Recycling is not going to cover needs even at 100% retrieval, and there is no way to achieve that level. Time to start looking for more asteroids. Gold is good, but we NEED copper.

Well, I don't think ICs REQUIRE copper. They would be larger and slower and require more power, but it can be done. The same is true of PC boards and wiring. In the seventies, when they tried aluminum, I think the biggest problem was that they thought they could just replace it. You CAN'T! It has to be a larger gauge, the loss is higher, etc... BTW electronic components have A LOT of copper, and some places get them just to harvest the metals

  • Maybe we should revisit a few McLuhan'isms...

“With the arrival of electric technology, man has extended, or set outside himself, a live model of the central nervous system itself. To the degree that this is so, it is a development that suggests a desperate suicidal autoamputation, as if the central nervous system could no longer depend on the physical organs to be protective buffers against the slings and arrows of outrageous mechanism. ”
― Marshall McLuhan, Understanding Media: The Extensions Of Man

“We become what we behold. We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us.”
    ― Marshall McLuhan

“Our Age of Anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today’s jobs with yesterday’s tools!”
    ― Marshall McLuhan

“Theirs is the customary human reaction when confronted with innovation: to flounder about attempting to adapt old responses to new situations or to simply condemn or ignore the harbingers of change--a practice refined by the Chinese emperors, who used to execute messengers bringing bad news. The new technological environments generate the most pain among those least prepared to alter their old value structures. The literati find the new electronic environment far more threatening than do those less committed to literacy as a way of life. When an individual or social group feels that its whole identity is jeopardized by social or psychic change, its natural reaction is to lash out in defensive fury. But for all their lamentations, the revolution has already taken place.”
    ― Marshall McLuhan

“Diaper spelled backwards is repaid, think about it.”

Last I heard, it was only worth about .89 cents - but that was only if you don't part it out...hopefully, it's increased in value since then...

Their concept of speed was a little skewed back then, I must say...

He believed that 'the Almighty certainly never intended that people should travel at such breakneck speed,' referring to the current limit of fifteen miles per hour.
As time went on, people continued to believe that travel at upwards of fifteen miles, thirty-five miles, and fifty miles would snatch the breath out of passenger's lungs and peel off their faces.

Ah, yes. The need for speed ... and a fear of the results. Scientists are now questioning whether the speed of light is truly the ultimate speed, and many are examining quantum physics with a new respect.

Imagine when we invent 'faster-than-light travel' and begin arriving at our destinations before we have even left home! We will be able to phone ourselves to see if we arrived safely! lol

    John,

Don't let it get you down. I thought about a kind of universal control. A bit over 15 years later, they had it. I thought of a search engine. A few years later they started to approach it. I thought of a kind of PDA, and even created a version of the software One guy even wanted to partner with me, but he wanted to do NOTHING. About 20 years later it came out. I came out with something that would revolutionize drive throughs! Some drive throughs are about 1/4 of the way there, but there are several internet sites that are like 90% of the way there, of course perhaps 35 years have passed!!!!!! and I just now came up with a NEW feature! 35 years ago, it would have seemed complicated. TODAY, the average drive through ALREADY has all the parts! They just didn't put it together right. Of course, if I said what my ideas were 35 years ago, people would even have laughed about the idea of computers even being around! Back then, there was almost a DECADE, between 1970 and 1980, when people really didn't know what was going on behind the scenes. IBM LAUGHED at the prospect, and Apple, Microsoft, Digital Research, ATT(as far as computers went) were virtually UNKNOWN! SURE, MILLIONS knew about them, but they were scattered all over the world, and there was little communication. TODAY, it would sound OBVIOUS! Although I have YET to see a drive through doing it!

Oh well, I had a number of ideas. Most of those not thought of yet by others are not so practical or salable.

What about a phone app that is basically a map of your town (or city) which displays where your friends are walking around? Or even better - how about tracking where everyone is going (via their mobile) as to solve crimes? (Hmm. Maybe a bit too 1984?)

          LOL Jonathan!

You know what I want? Maybe they have them already and if they do, maybe someone could lead me to them.

Anyway, back in the days before digital cameras, everyone carried pictures of their kids/grandkids, etc. in their wallets.

Well, I want a small compact wallet sized electronic photo carrier like the digital photo frames they have now where it displays your photos in a slide show, except razor thin and something you can carry in your purse. You could load the photos on it right from your camera's micro card or something.

I know you can store pics on your phone, but your phone does a lot of other crap too. I want one just for showing photos.

          That's what I'm thinking.

              Thanks Jonathan,

That was very considerate of you.

But I don't want it to be a key chain. I want it to be about the size of a wallet and maybe have a protective case kind of like a business card holder or something, so it doesn't get messed up from all of the other goodies floating around in my purse.

              Oh Steve...

Good grief - you didn't know that you can be tracked via your cell phone? I won't even allow anyone to take a cellphone in my car when I go on rock hunts - don't want anyone to know where I am when I'm out in the wilds. What we need now is GPS BLOCKERS so nobody can trace your every step.

  • Speaking of odd technology...a friend and I were watching a show on new inventions and inventors one time, and this lady stands up and says she has a breakthrough revolutionary idea for.........a microwave refrigerator!

The Host/Moderator was actually quite kind, and complemented her for "thinking outside the box" - my friend goes: That's a cool idea"...

I was going  - A microwave refrigerator? Do you guys know what microwave is, and how a microwave oven works?

How do you make a microwave refrigerator??? I think that would be quite a challenge...

Sure - it's thinking outside the box...but the box was sent to the wrong address!

When I was a teen, I thought it would be cool to make a refrigerator with an insulated tinted glass front, so when you pressed a light, you could see inside the fridge without opening the door...some folks thought that was crazy.

I saw a high tech kitchen segment on TV awhile back...and guess what it had...:p

As Preston Tucker said: "The guy with the crazy idea (later turns out to revolutionize the world) is squashed from above before he can even get his head out of the water..."

Some great inventions evolve, some are "born" by necessity...and some?
