Good a place as any, Joe. There are discussions about this in the main forum and WF online legal expert, kindsvtar, has been making comments and answering questions. I'd put the URL in here to that thread but would have to go search it back down myself, so guess if you're interested, you get to do the legwork.

It really is important that people do get a grip on this one though. Just one more piece of new regulation to add to the ever growing mountains of regulations that will soon be complete enough to prosecute you if you don't fold your toilet paper right before use.

Not saying that scammers don't need to get the boot - they really really do need to be expelled from decent society -- but I sure am getting tired of endless, and more restricting, regulations, and the immense power grab being taken by the rulers now.

Nobody takes any notice of the FTC, you only have to do a little bit of surfing around the internet to see that. Plus I'm not interested in following the laws of a country I don't operate in, just like people in the USA aren't going to start following the laws of China or Iran.

Your comment is to ironic for me to post anything useful you'd be capable of understanding.

      Right?
What does selling a product to another country have to do with anything? Lots of products are traded across boarders, but until it enters the jurisdiction of that country it doesn't have to follow the laws of that country. The only reason why products and services comply with the rules and regulations of a target market is because it makes life a whole lot easier.

So long as it's legal for that product/service to enter that country that's all that matters.

      This isn't complicated stuff here.

That is not the position that U.S. federal government agencies take, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). There are many cases where extraterritorial application of U.S. consumer protection law have been used to seize assets and issue arrest warrants. Many countries (including the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) cooperate with extradition requests.

Does the FTC have the resources to go after these cases all of the time? Of course not. But they do flex their muscles and make examples.

One can debate the fairness of doing so all day. But the fact remains that simply because a product or service is legal isn't all that matters. Sell it deceptively and that's where the FTC (and all 50 states attorneys general) have the ability to step in to protect the purchaser.

        Caveat venditor

        Best wishes,

        -Mike
