did you install, or uninstall any new software?
did you mess with the services?

    is your harddrive clicking?
Do you hear the fan running?
If you don't attempt to go online, does it stay on?
Did you do any new windows updates?

when you say crash, what exactly do you mean? does it just freeze up?
or do you get a kernal warning? Does it actually shut off on its own?

10 minutes to boot up can be anything from bad ram, to munged registry
or as simple as multi user log in file corrupted or over heating.

for help, we need details, the more the better.

Hi, did not install any new software, did not mess with any software, no clicking in the hard drive it won't update all the new window updates. It freezes up when I try and do anything, it does not shut off on its own and the fan is fine.

off the cuff sounds like a software issue, NOT a hardware issue.

so you don't need a new laptop.

        A) you can reformat it, and reinstall the OS
        B) try and log in thru safe mode, see if you can do anything,
if you can. if you have the auto back up on ( its on by default in xp and later ) roll it back - a date before you had issues )

        C) manually download the current service pack for the laptop on another pc log into laptop via safe mode, install service pack.
that may help you get it running to the point where you can install the rest of the windows updates.

        D) bring to a local tech. they will prob fix you up pretty quick for a decent price.

Sounds like possible virus issue or a hard drive about to fail. ( a lot of times people think its a virus when it takes forever to load but it IS the hard drive going bad.)
There are prograsms you can buty to test it,or you can take it to a shop.
I personally use this: GRC*|*Hard drive data recovery software**
but $90 is probably more that if you took it to a shop and askd them to test your hard drive, I rest quite a few since I am/was a tech so it was worth it for me.

Format your laptop, that will solve all your problems. Alternately download CCleaner and cleanup (you can google these). Run these and clean up your stuffs.

Also make sure your laptop is virus, adware, malware and spyware free. You should checkout filehippo.com. you would find tons of freeware on that site.

If the hard drive is going bad formatting will NOT fix his problem.

Have you ever tried putting a hard drive in the freezer? Sometimes this could buy some recovery time...but it is an old trick, some say it works, some not.

If you put a hard drive in the freezer, you risk condensation forming in and on the hard drive
... that can have catastrophic consequences.

Even ziplock bagged for about 1hr or so? I guess it could happen...that would not be good.

I have to say no. if the hard drive is going bad and you are trying to save data, sometimes it will take overnight to test the whole disk. Thats probably its biggest downside. At the same time,if I see it say its going to take that long I can be pretty assured that its finding way to many problems for it to run in a reasonable time and can conclude that it IS a bad drive. Of course I do check the error correction and bad sector stats before I make my final decision to let it run or to stop it early.

do you mess with linux at all ? any flavor? if not, they have some built in utilities for checking and fixing disk errors, that is pretty bad ass.
(waaay faster then any windows tools i have come across )

they also have a AWESOME file recovery utility as well, i have used several "goverment grade" forensic recovery utilities and the free one that comes with ubuntu is comparable.... and 10X faster

I have been using linux for years, its pretty good. i would not swear by it tho. Its very useful, but missing many small things, that creates a kind of wierd working environment.

Your forced pretty much to do all the important stuff through the command promt... which is great for an ego boost, security and learning,

but it reminds me too much of old school telnet and DOS, and i have pretty much been over that since win 95.

I use it on and off, some times ill use it primarily for months, and then i just get tired of it, and wind up going back to windows.

Mostly nowadays i use it to fix windows PC's , and honestly, you cannot beat it , for that use. you can actually virus scan fat 32 and ntfs thru linux
which is really nice if your dealing with one of those nasty ones that will hide in your data stream.

You can also ( and this is real sweet ) have it on a bootable thumb drive,
and fix most windows errors <<-- for those machines that are DOA
you cant beat that with a stick.

They also have a compiler called GAMBAS its very much like old school VB
i like that a lot, so if you have the time you can actually create your own apps/plug ins to make it more user suitable
