Didn't the Brits get beat at Hastings?

How about the finest since the Spanish Armada?

I was trying to say that since 1066 when they were conquered by William that overcoming the blitz was their finest hour.

But you're right the Spanish Armada was also a very serious challenge to their sovereignty...

...but no Spanish troops visited anything upon the English shores like in the London Blitz situation.

Very true folks, a big risk to national sovereignty thwarted. But also, don't forget when the French out numbered the English and were a big threat to the existence of Briton was the Battle of Agincourt and Crecy in the hundred years war between English and the french.

Welsh archers were heavilly represented. The village of Llantrisant in Wales for instance had many fine specialist archers who helped Edward the black prince to victory over the French. pivotal battles for survival i would argue?????

I actually thought of Agincourt when I made my post...It was an impressive victory with the English long-bowmen making the difference.

But I didn't include it because it was a battle in a 100 year war.

I'm probably wrong...But it didn't seem to be a single event to me, but part of a number of other things.

And there's always Waterloo...IMO, Wellington is the most underrated general of all time, with Napoleon being overrated. Napoleon lost 3 times, in Egypt, Russia and Waterloo.

Wellington was undefeated, including tours in India, beating Napoleon's troops in Spain/Portugal (although Napoleon wasn't there), then defeating Napoleon at Waterloo. IMO, history should say Wellington was the better general.

              - At the battle of the Nile, the French ships were caught by the Brits with their guns pointed towards the shore ( for the locals ) instead of outward at the Brits.

              - I heard Wellington hide troops behind the folds of hills in the battle of Waterloo and that helped turn the tide.
