Thanks for posting that. It explains a lot.

But what it doesn't explain is why parents don't take the initiative and explain sex to their children. The schools sex education programs obviously are lacking, and it shouldn't be up to the schools in the first place.

If these two children (yes, children!) had parents who sat down with each of them and explained what could happen, how it happens and how to keep it from happening, they never would have become parents at such a young age.

Condoms are a helluva a lot cheaper than diapers.

At least the families will stick together and help them raise this child, for they surely are not yet able to do it by themselves.

My parents never sat me down for a 'sex ed' talk and I sincerely wish they had done so. I was completely unprepared and suffered a lot of embarrassment and humility as a teenager because of their inability to give it to me straight.

Are you a parent of an adolescent? Do you love your child? Then have enough respect to sit them down and talk to them! Teach them so they do not have to learn everything on their own or from their peers (which will most likely be incorrect information).

And just because you are teaching them about sex does not mean they will run right out and do it now that they know about.

And you'd be surprised how much your child will respect you for being up front and frank with them.

It's been a big topic (once again) in the backward state I currently live in.

This state is at the top of state rankings in the area of teen pregnancy and teenage birth statistics.

And the debate? They are finally going to offer "sex education" in a few schools to "test the results" - and the total focus of the "education" is on abstinence.

Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it??? NOT!

    Why is this news?
People did get married at that age years back.

Of course the life expectancy in the 1800's was just 37 so, they had to
    "git bizzy" much earlier.

I don't condone it, just fail to see the headline worthyness of it all.

After all, watch some TV, check out the magazine rack at the Barnes and Noble, listen to some of the lyrics of today's songs and tell me then you are surprised.

    Funny - but sad.

Now all the little boys who have had sex with the girl (I don't think 'slept with' fits) are crawling out of the woodwork to claim paternity. At least two, a 14 year old and a 16 year old are requesting DNA tests.

What's even more sad is that the girls parents knew about the 16 year old because they 'gave him permission'!

My oldest is in 4th grade and there's no way in hell that she'll be put on birth control. And as for the school learning to make a birds and the bees program - it should be nothing more than reiterating what I as a parent should have already taught my child. I am the parent, it is my responsibility to educate and inform my child and some of those other parents who turn a blind eye should pull their heads out of their asses.

My daughters is going to be 10 in 3 days and her dad and I have already had a sex discussion and I have also talked to her about puberty. It shouldn't be left up to the school to educate on sex - they weren't there when we made the decision to have her nor should they be there when we make the decision to discuss sex education.

Argh - this just makes me even more adamant to find some land in the middle of nowhere and homeschool. lol

That is the whole truth and nothing but - unfortunately, many parents don't see it that way and aren't going to bother themselves with it. From what I've seen, I wouldn't trust some of their views on the subject either. Some people who aren't capable of raising kids have kids and that leaves the schools to do their jobs. That hasn't changed. My dad was a school administrator and dealt with a heck of a lot of people who were adamant that education was the school's job and not theirs.

It's reasons like this that I believe in sterilization - let people who won't take responsibility for the baby's they pump out continue to breed and we end up with very large and very stupid and demented populations who drop more of the same.

I think it's time for the UK to make welfare reforms a la Clinton. I keep remembering that family with what-10 kids I think and the mother never worked a day in her life and the father almost never worked and they get a free large house, free food, free Christmas presents, free everything and they still find stuff to complain about Makes me wonder why anyone in the UK would want to actually work a legit job while welfare families are living better than they are. If you're on welfare in the USA at least you are required to work or volunteer 20 hrs a week (with some exceptions)

At least this 13 yr old is stepping up to the plate when he could run away and deny the baby. Even though he doesn't know what financially means and "thinks nappies cost a lot". But the girl was sleeping with 8 guys? Whoa! At 15 I hardly knew what sex was lol.

    Hi, John,

If you move to England, do so as an illegal immigrant - just turn up and (especially if you restrict your verbalising to the two words "Social Security") you will be given everything your heart could desire.

It is a sad fact that the British government loathes its' own victims (sorry, citizens) to a degree that is mind boggling. I believe that it is 0nly in the UK that a black man can claim racial prejudice but cannot be accused of it - no matter what he does to demonstrate it.

It is a sad fact that pensioners in the UK who have been through one, possibly two, wars and made enormous personal sacrifices in the process have their every benefit claim minutely examined while an illegal immigrant can claim whatever he wants and get it - it would be racial prejudice to deny it!

It is a sad fact that the Labour maladministartion is still fighting desperately to prevent a few loyal, time served Gurkhas retiring in the UK - even though they fought for the crown and wore the Queen's uniform after swearing their allegiance!

This young person is following a great British tradition created by the welfare mentality. She is looking to get a place of her own and, despite her youth, will probably get it.

Last year in Middlesbrough, social services arrived at the apartments occupied by Romanian immigrants to see how they were settling into the accommodation that they had recently been given. Social services found that many of the electrical appliances and some of the furnture that had been provided was missing. The explanation? The Romanians had sold it and sent the money back to family members in Romania. I'd like to tell you that the furniture and appliances weren't replaced - but Middlesbrough is a Labour stronghold, so....

I'm amazed by the "Muslim women only" sessions that are timetabled in local swimming pools. How is such open discrimination permitted?

People who have been waiting for years on council house waiting lists have found that they have gone backwards up the queue, because immigrants have been given priority! I thought that the point of a queue was "first come, first served"!

Yeah, anybody could do that - but it's not much of a life, is it? It would be an unforgivable crime to get to the end of your life and to have contributed nothing, to have made no effort to leave the world in a better state than you found it.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to politiciand and educators that they just could be making things worse by starting sex education younger and younger. In the UK it now gets addressed in primary school and doctors are prescribing contraceptive pills etc for kids well under 16 but they are not allowd by law to consult or inform the parents.

I note that the UK government statistics show that there hasn't been much of a change in recent years in what they define as "teenage pregnancy" - but they define that as births to girls under 18. Hang on. It's legal to have sex when you reach 16. Surely the real figues we need are for births to girls under 16 and a half!

Its bordering on child abuse really. That little boy - I saw him on tv - has absolutely no idea what is happening to him. A reporter asked him how he would managed finacially and he said "whats financially"? Poor lad.

No it's not legal, MM. But Sussex Police have said that there's very little to be gained by pressing charges, so they're letting it go. Critics have said that this gives a "green light" to any other underage kids who want to fool around.

Even if your parents don't teach you, you learn from peers, sex ed, TV and movies, somewhere. Not necessarily.

Sex ed programs vary greatly from school to school. Most are pretty worthless. (At least they are around here.)

If TV and movies are monitored appropriately, then there won't be any "sex ed" in them for young teens/preteens.

Not only that, but if you are only 14 and 12, how are you going to get birth control if Mom and Dad don't drive you?

Finally, if kids can't even pick up their rooms without being reminded, how on earth are they going to be responsible enough to use birth control each time every time?

Obviously little is known of the way the Social Services work in the UK.

To get this story into perspective - it is now fairly well established that the girl's mother not only knew she was sexually active but gave her blessing and allowed the boys to sleep in her room.

The 13 year old was apparently chosen to be 'named' as the father because this would appeal to the gutter press and give rise to much media interest and large cash payments for interviews.

The girl lives in an over-crowded house and this was one way to get a place of her own.

What will happen now is that the Social Services will provide all that this girl, her baby and whoever is finally accepted as the father, will need to live a life of relative ease. She will get accommodation, rent rebates, exemption from council tax, single parent allowance (unless she marries), furniture, decoration and clothing subsidies, subsidies for baby necessities and anything else that she finds to claim.

Living 'on the social' is a fine art in the UK and there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of out of work layabouts enjoying the hard earned money of the British tax payer.

There is something drastically wrong with a system that pays someone MORE to be out of work than they could earn if they were working.

There is something inherently evil in a system that actively encourages immature girls to become pregnant.
