Do Videos Affect Young Children?

In watching my toddler, I would say that watching videos definitely has an impact on him. We actually got rid of our TV, mainly for his sake to spare him of seeing violent or disturbing images.

Anyway, I've witnessed my toddler mimicking things he sees on videos. For example, when he was watching a Shirley Temple movie on the computer and there was a scene of Shirley Temple riding on a horse driven carriage, he hopped on his dino-scooter.

He saw this video of babies dancing...

...this is what he did:

    That's so cute!

He seems pretty smart too, not only wanting to learn the dance moves, but making sure his costume was comparable.

He was something else after watching this video, running around to find and put on his black clothes, then trying these moves:

  • This Aussie fab four have been dubbed the greatest preschool rock band in the world. In 2007 the Wiggles raked in around 40 million bucks. One can assume they've probably experienced similar success in '08 and '09 . In 2003, when the group performed at Madison Square Garden, front-row tickets were sold for US$500

Yes, videos have the potential to affect young children. Children are impressionable and visual images (and sounds) draw their attention. Parents should always screen material before letting their children watch it.

Children learn from modeling behaviors. It does not matter who or where the behavior is from. Children of young ages are visual learners. Videos that have a strong effect (negative) on children are graphic violence, horror movies, and physical violence. When choosing television programming or videos for small children ask yourself, do I want my child learning the behaviors on this tv program, or video.

Choose tv, and videos with appropriate behaviors for the child to model, even a greater impact model those appropriate behaviors yourself.

In my career as a social worker 25 years, i specialized in working with children in an institutional environment. Many of these children came in showing behaviors learned from popular movies, and tv shows that were of violent graphic, sexual, and horror.

We observed that restricting the types of tv, and movies that had violence, and extreme graphic horror, it had an impact on their behaviors; decreasing the bad behaviors. When we showed tv, and movies with appropriate behaviors the children began modeling those behaviors. When staff members role modeled the same appropriate behaviors the children's appropriate behaviors increased.

Hope this was easy to understand, tv, and videos effect children; just depends what you allow them to watch.

It made sense to me. I appreciate your thoughtful and well-informed reply. We have let watch things according to similar principals as you described, English choices in the day, Mandarin selection at night. We look for videos that are both educational and informative, appropriate for his age. Within such a spectrum, he still has a lot of choices, and we largely let him decide what he wants to watch.

Hi! Yes movie left great impact on children because which thing they see in the movie
they want to adopt such seen practically which is not good thing because such seen are not easy and they can become harmful for children. and such bad movies left very bad impact on little children's' minds.
