I hadn't noticed so much, to be honest. If there are fewer of us, we certainly seem, collectively, to pull our weight.

Such suggestions always intrigue me. I'm asking out of genuine interest and with no inference of criticism at all: why/how do you think that would be preferable to receiving help from/offering help to any male internet marketers?

      Hmmm,

I have never thought of male domination in IM before and I suppose that is because IM is an enormous umbrella covering many diverse categories.

Well that, and I'm quite certain that not many men dominate the genre of female voice over artist, lol!

I have to agree with Alexa on the second portion of you question. I'm not clear on how other women could help me in business and must honestly admit that some of the best advice and training that I have received has been in fact, from men. I also have been blessed with some great advice and training from women as well.

I'm not sure I would like an all woman network as I quite enjoy the diversity of thought process that both men and women bring to the table.

Just sharing my personal experience and thoughts with you.

well i, myself, am a male. but i think a woman-only marketing team \ community is a great idea. i recently went to the AffiliateSummitWest in vegas and many of the people who attended were male. Although I did meet a number of extremely brilliant successful females. So i think it's a terrific idea to celebrate your gender no matter the scenario or situation, even in internet marketing.

I wouldn't break your potential demographic down into male/female.

Instead, I'd look at it more as topic based, and find niches and areas that may be interested in your product or service. Basing things on gender potentially cuts out 50% of your customer base, give or take (depending on the subject matter).

Because a great deal of the so called gurus are men, IM appears to be dominated by them. However IM is multi faceted and there are quite a few women around. Most of us toil away quietly and store our riches rather than post videos all week about how great we are.

    An all female marketing group?
Sure...why not but you'd have to sell most on the benefit. Would we be discussing the unique challenges women face in IM? Not sure what those are. I've probably experienced more racism than sexism in IM.

However, if you just want to chop it up and rather do so with other women, cool. My skype contact is to the left.

Well, I am not a woman, but I have known, and known of, quite a few in business, etc.... ALSO, some try to look male, using generic names, initials, changing their names, or using psuedonyms, because they figure that they would do better. Traditionally, men HAVE been more into technology, but men have been moving more away from it, and women have been moving more towards it.

Frankly, I don't see how racism or sexism really must come into play. HECK, I communicated with a female for like 5 years before she revealed she was BLACK! I felt I had her down more than any two unrelated people are likely to be, etc... She and I think a lot alike and have a lot of odd similarities. People have reacted to us in similar ways. And then she says she is black. But that didn't change anything, and she and I still talk to one another in the same way. Had we spoken, or talked face to face, I probably would have known instantly that she was black.

Mark Joyner revealed that he had a female persona representing him on EMAIL. so MANY thought they were talking with a third party woman when they were REALLY talking with HIM!

Halcyon, How have you seen racism in IM? You don't seem shy about having your avatar up.

I'm not shy anymore. Times have changed a bit and I stop caring what other people thought. I figured if you didn't want to associate with me because I was black then that was your problem.

Some people are just ignorant of their feelings and will respond negatively without even knowing why. We all have latent 'isms' and the internet is a breeding ground for some people to let their hatred flags fly without guilt.

However I used to frequent forums ( circa 1998-2001) and all would be fine until I put an avatar up.

I split test a few landing pages and found that the ones without my picture did better than the ones with my picture. I tried my husband's picture and a family picture. No dice. The copy was exactly the same.
I think we're a pretty nice looking family so I chalked it up to people not liking the way we looked for some other reason.

The test with the highest results was a page where I placed the photos of 3 families, mine and two stock photo families. My family was the only black family and the response was quadruple of the page with only our picture.

To be honest it's not as bad as it used to be and I was considering running another split test. I've found in 2012 people have found much better reasons than skin color to hate each other.

I'm very happy that you feel this way Halcyon!

Quite a few years back I adopted this philosophy:

I am who I am - your approval not needed!

Talk about entering into a whole new level of freedom! I actually believe that coming to this mindset shows a certain level of maturity.

Well, I hope you ran tests more than once, and compared ALL results, separately! I never put much faith in split tests since you don't know WHO is considering the product, etc... I mean given the same options, there is a fair chance any two people may choose differently, and a person may not buy for a reason that has NOTHING to do with you.

Oprah, Obama, Many sport stars, singers, entertainers, etc... did FINE with non black audiences. And Oprah was NOT the first female talk show host, so THAT wasn't it. She might be the first one to last more than 5 years in the same format though. She might be the first to last as long as she has.

Let's face it. If James Earl Jones sounded like Urkel, it is unlikely that anyone today would know who he is. Then again, if Vin Diesel did, the SAME would likely be true.

For what it is worth, I think you look fine, and the fact that you are black wouldn't affect my buying your product. Then again, the fact that you're a woman wouldn't affect it either.

          I agree and I did.
As I said the world is a better more tolerant place and it is because of famous people like Oprah and Obama. I think they not only prove the world is more tolerant, they're making it so. Because of these people, society has become much more open to diversity now than even 10 years ago.

Unfortunately, blacks still receive death threats for no other reason than the color of their skin and that's sad. I've had a few.

Don't get me wrong, I have no complaints and my life is so much better than the life of my Birmingham,AL native parents. But I won't pretend that the anonymity of the internet doesn't allow people to nurture their evil feelings guilt free.

I just choose not to wallow in it. In my experience, most people have moved past stupid prejudice but one rotten apple still can spoil the bunch.

That happens to WHITES also! Heck, it happens to all. And I have known blacks that have been hurt by blacks, and whites that have been hurt by whites, for NO reason.

Is it in recent years that "woman" became an adjective that means "female"? I've noticed this use of "woman" for a while now and am curious to the rationale behind it. "Man Internet Marketers" would sound strange (even Tarzan-like) while "Woman Internet Marketers" is fairly standard sounding now.

Perhaps it's just a trend and who really knows why certain things become trendy in the first place.

Well, the term girl may seem demeaning to a woman, and the term woman doesn't apply to a young girl, so I sometimes use the term female to refer to both generally. I do the same with the word male.

Interestingly, if there has EVER been a perceived bias against a group, that group will single themselves out with a label, at least if they feel free enough to label themselves so.

Dr. Pepper recently came up with a "Man's diet drink". They are trying to catch the male demographic that might feel uneasy about diet items. There ARE some things that have been identified as acts females would do that are NECESSARY in today's world. Cooking, taking care of kids, etc.... so males have tended to avoid them to some degree. Don't ask me why it goes that way. For the record, I will leave childcare to the women(Or a trusted teenage girl), but otherwise I am OK with doing the laundry, cooking, etc...

BTW I don't know if you noticed it, but I said women were a GROUP with a PERCEIVED bias. They are not a real minority as any excess males tend to die out and, towards the end, there are even MORE females! And women have recently spoken against higher health insurance costs, while ignoring lower car and life insurance costs. Earlier, there were talks against clothing costs, though some go for really off the wall clothing, etc... Even the income bias is unfair since it covers ALL women and some don't work in higher paying jobs for various reasons. So the statistics are skewed.

I've often wondered about this bias. If a woman loves kids and bakes cookies, she's a nice old lady. If a guy does this we think he's a pervert. If a woman wears her husband's shirt in public no one would look at her twice. If a man wears his wife's shirt he's considered a cross dresser... hmm

Ok now I'm really off topic in this off topic discussion.

Yeah. Of course women may have frillier and more colorful clothes that are designed for their figures, and a man's clothes might cover up things she is not happy about, etc... But yeah, you're right. If I were to go to a park, who knows what people might think. Middle aged men are suspect. And if I were to watch young girls at play? YIKES! As for cookies? Sometimes there was nothing else at home really, and I was hungry, and I even baked cookies, and brownies, from my mother's betty crocker cookbook, from scratch, of course! But you generally don't find boys in home ec, and I wasn't either!

Interesting. never thought about the car insurance issue, as compared to health care.

Also I agree that men are much more likely to be suspected when with children, in a park or anywhere. I think as a woman I am considered much less a "threat" and that's not really fair to the men.

Yeah, the fact that I a male actually COST me a car! My father was getting a new corvette and, as a teenager, he offered the OLD one to me. The insurance agent LAUGHED, and it was too expensive! A FREE car was too expensive! If I were a girl, maybe I could have afforded it. Life insurance is also cheaper if you are female. All too often some secretly embrace benefits, and overlook them when discussing the problems.

And YEAH, women have a LOT more freedoms! I could list like 2 dozen benefits. LUCKILY, for me, MOST I couldn't use, or wouldn't want, etc.... But women often like them, EVEN FEMINISTS! Things that could get a male ostracized, a woman could freely do. And women are the ONLY protected class that is a MAJORITY! At least 2 customers or vendors I have dealt with were woman owned companies that were started by their EX HUSBANDS!

YEAH, I'll admit that there have been myths about male strengths or female weaknesses and women weren't given a fair shake. That is NOT so true today.

I don't know about THAT. I haven't bragged, but I HAVE known a lot of women that did so. Of course, I don't think either sex generally brags.

Of course, I DID send out a list of accomplishments today to a customer. Some might say that is bragging, but they asked, and I had to show SOME success.
