Shocking documentary - Extremely Strong Viewer Discretion Advised!

Whatever you do, DO NOT allow your kids to see this. And if you get upset easily at all from looking at the suffering of other people, please DO NOT watch this documentary.

I watched this last week and it shocked me to the core.

It's a documentary by Jon Snow, one of the most well respected journalists and news readers here in the United Kingdom. His Channel4 news program airs every night on the TV. He's right at the very, very top of his game.

This documentary is about the recent Sri Lanka war crimes which took place in 2009. The documentary is titled...

Sri Lanka Killing Fields - War Crimes Unpunished

As I warned you before... DO NOT watch this full stop if you get upset easily. The footage contained in this documentary is enough to make any good honest person recoil in shock, horror and absolute disgust.

The reason I'm putting this out here is because I believe the message from this documentary, about these atrocities should be made known to more people with the clout to do something about it.

Without going overboard on this DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU EASILY GET UPSET and most certainly... DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY!!! (It's far too shocking for their eye's).

Background info here... Sri Lanka's Killing Fields - Sri Lanka's Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished - Channel 4

Watch on 4od...

Sri Lanka's Killing Fields - 4oD - Channel 4

Episode 1 on Youtube...

Best thing to do is to get a temporary UK IP address then you'll be able to watch it no problem Deepak.

      Kindest regards,

Mark - first one tells me error occurred, second one says uploader has not made it available in my country.

Not sure what's gone on there - but saw the red water on the front of the video. Can you give a recap?

      Broadly Sal,

40,000 civilians were shelled, executed, raped etc by Government forces in the last few weeks of the 25 year civil war.

Due to the proliferation of mobile phones there are countless thousands of 'video' clips of this which were collated by Channel 4 and submitted to the UN.

This is the original documentary that Channel 4 did last June (which was submitted to the UN) and it's follow up that was broadcast here in the UK last week.

Needless to say nobody has been tried for War Crimes and the Government still insist they had what they term a Zero Civilian Casualties Policy.

Sri Lanka is a paradise island popular with tourists so this film was (irrationally I know) more shocking.

Remember, we are here for a test.
Why should god control the people?
If he does that, the world would be perfect.

Mark - I know we go into other countries - but look at our reasoning.

Thirteen years AFTER nerve gas was used on the populace we used that as one reason to enter Iraq. 13 years! Yet it was discussed as if it were a new atrocity. We use the excuses when they suit our purposes...and we aren't the only country to do that.

History has shown the futility of trying to shape up Afghanistan - Russia couldn't do it 9 years - and we haven't done it in 10. We had reason to go there but I doubt much was changed permanently.

In both cases, it was not response to a country's civil war....but our own agenda that motivated us.

Those films were from three years ago - the Tamil Tigers have been defeated, so they say. Today, similar atrocities are going on the Sudan - same lack of action by others.

For most nations (all?) self interest of its own citizens comes first. That's the point of the government of any democratic country. That is not to say we don't help - there are food and medical supplies in the billions sent by many countries to many other areas of the world.

Also consider any military intervention puts the lives of military form other countries at risk. Not many citizens are willing to risk lives to interfere in a small country's civil war that has been ongoing year after year.

What I'm saying is when we see something horrendous, it's natural to want to "do something". When you consider the potential consequences, doing something doesn't always make sense.

Ah Jesus. I'm a little glad I didn't see it. It's exactly what I worry about happening here soon. God knows the the US is very fond of using violence to get their way and God knows the UN never says boo about it to them.

Thank you Dan for summing it up so well and to the point.

It's a horrific documentary, the footage is truly appalling. As Channel4 (a public TV channel in the UK, one of big top 5 channels) stated... "These scenes are by far some of the worst scenes we've ever broadvast on this channel." And believe you me - Channel4 normally pushes the envelope.

This footage is in a league of it's own. Enough to make your stomach churn in abject disgust and horror at the atrocities committed by both sides during the conclusion of this 25 year civil war in Sri Lanka.

What's perhaps even more shocking is the fact that happened so recently, in 2009 in fact.

Very sad indeed. Of the government forces and for that matter the Tamil Tigers perpetrating these horrendous crimes against their own people the only word which comes to mind to describe them is, savages. Bordering on feral.

It just staggers the imagination that other people can at times be this cruel towards their fellow wo/man and children. Just unbelievable.

And so far, they've got away with it scot free. And the UN they seem to be completely uninterested in taking any further action which in itself is, well... words for once completely fail me.

There's an interesting timeline at BBC News - Sri Lanka profile - Timeline

There's much more to it than a civil war with atrocities in 2009. Not sure what the U.N. could do as it was said at the time that atrocities were committed by both sides. It points out the difficulty of outside countries stopping a civil war.

The only comparison to the U.S. would be in the beginning - our actions against the native Indians here. Atrocities on both sides and a kill or be killed mentality that gradually acquired a veneer of civilized society.

Well it's amazing Kay how we can wade into other countries like Afghanistan or Iraq or any one of a number of other countries throughout the decades yet in this instance, as there is no vested economic interest i.e. oil...

...we show no interest at all in getting involved despite the fact that tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children are slaughtered in the most dreadful way imaginable.

          Ironic no?

I'm simply spreading awareness Kay, it's all I can really do short of flying down there to offer practical help on the ground.

As for the billions in aid money it's nothing but digits flying across computers most of the time. Billions or millions of pounds / dollars come to that of money donated by other governments is one one of the biggest cons known to man. It's meaningless.

Put this money into the hands of a few NGO's and they really could start to kick some ass, get the help to where it's precisely needed the most instead of syphoned off into never ending pockets of diplomats and quango's.
