how can you guys be on this forum and not know of the recent events? Google has essentially declared war on all internet marketers, they've sandboxed, and or banned 100's of thousands of websites for "unnatural" links recently, they banned many adsense accounts and aren't allowing new ones to join right now. They've made article backlinks essentially useless, and they also apparently consider all forms of backlinks "unnatural" now unless the site owners themselves add you...This has opened the door for "negative seo" and companies ready and willing to take out your compeition for cheap...google is the giant that got too much power, and now they're abusing it. For adsense it's against their TOS to change the code what so ever, or put it in a iframe to prevent click bombs, which can get you banned easily. They set you up to fail then drop a brick on your head when you do.

I am glad they took action, now there is more change for high quality content to rank.

I am sick and tired of seeing quality sites rank below some of the crap that people create then fire thousands of auto generated links at.

Well my friend, I hope you're not one of those companies that worked years on growing your sites rank, legitley, and slowly only to have it wiped out within a day by an attacker because googles new system is so broken. They seemed to brain wash many with this "quality" concept, truth is they don't care about you or your site, they want to sell more ad revenue. The employee who recently left even said they're all about the bottom line now. But as long as they can brainwash people with words like quality, I suppose they have nothing to worry about.

I also find it surprising you're such a big google fan when they banned your adsense and your 4000 you were making by it? googles lame, they always have been and just recently turned it up a notch. Shame all the consumers are on their site, otherwise they wouldn't matter.

At no time did i say they banned my adsense!

They deindexed loads of sites that i had that were making money through me gaming the system. I was autogenerating sites and scraping content both of which were against their TOS.

I knew the risks which was why i had diversified.

It's all a game you can either play by the rules or play by your own rules, it's your choice but if and when google does catch up there is no point in complaining about it.

Everyone knows that using blog networks is against their TOS so why act all surprised when they de-index sites using them?

Because they're punishing people that have done nothing wrong, and haven't used blog networks or anything even remotely similar? But no worries, as long as they have fan boys like you who think they can "do no wrong" they're good. I should study google, see how they brainwash so many, i'm guessing it's the "perception is reality" concept, the colorful logo since the visual is very powerful, and the "don't be evil slogan" over the years. You say something enough, repeat it over and over, I guess people start believing it.

Um.........you don't have to be doing anything "wrong" to lose ranking. Your site might just be trash that people aren't liking when they get to it and, as such, you will lose ranking when your bounce rate indicates that it probably isn't the site people want to use when they are seeing it on first pages listings. Google isn't a prosecution system - it's a business and if your business isn't doing theirs any good you can prepare to get whacked. Would you be stupid enough to make things very visible in your business if numbers showed you that it was trashing your business up?

I'm not just talking about losing ranking, i'm talking about sites getting sand boxed for doing nothing wrong. Anyway "bounce rate" is very hard to determine the cause anyway, someone could find a great site, bookmark it for later then hit the back button, and they get penalized for that? see what I mean, google trying to be too smart for their own good isn't good for anyone. Anyway you continue to cheer on google, that's your choice, i'm just not a fan.

Says who? It seems that 9 times out 0f 10 when someone says they didn't do anything wrong, if you dig deep enough you will find they did something wrong.
Google is just a tool and like any tool you can use it the right way or the wrong way.
If you use a tool the wrong way and it doesn't work, it's not the tools fault it's the user's fault.
By the way, I'm not a fan of google. I don't care enough about it to be a fan or not be a fan.

M Thompson I appreciate your honesty.

I'm more a fan of Google than ever. The changes have made the search engine a lot better. I don't know your site specifically, but some good sites are going to get harmed in any major change. I think the changes have still been for the best. Some of the ways people used to increase search rankings were silly.

A successful site should be one that has the most useful content and features, not the one that plays the SEO game the best. Google's changes are bringing my ideal closer to reality.

Google is gaming things for their own enterprises. I have mixed feelings about Google. It has certainly created some useful online tools. Overall, however, I distrust Google, since it has already been abusing its power and influence. As Cashtree pointed out, Google is a hypocritical entity.

Thanks for the honesty comment , it's what i strive for...

I have been and am a big critic of some of googles policies BUT the latest one is actually quite a good one. I have a number of magazine articles out there and blog posts that basically say that google hates marketers (despite that some people call me a fanboy..go figure).

Google want a level playing field, Ethical marketers want a level playing field so any thing that is done to aid this has to be good in the long run.

I also want point out. Its a changing world. BING is now integrated within facebook puts Bing infront of 750+ million users. Windows 8 was designed with tablet market in mind and Bing is part of that packaging. Social Media is becoming more popular by the minute. IMers need to shift the mindset away from Google and into the future. "google it", used to be "do you yahoo".

It's bad business practice to get hung up on one referrer for more than 50% of your work in any field of business.

If you have only one portal for your customers, and that portal is itself a "for profit" corporation that couldn't give two hoots about you or your business in individual terms, then if you get de-indexed, dropped..you only have yourself to blame if 90%+ of your business..your living, the money you need to feed yourself and your family..goes out of the window with it.

Any business should look to mitigate the huge risk it would be to have a client base entirely reliant on one third party referring service.

My sites increase in traffic year on year, and rely on Google percentage wise for that traffic less and less each year.

Sure a "slap" would still hurt. I'd lose 50% of my business over night. But I would still have 50% and have the skills and contacts set up to maximise that and crawl my way back up.

Losing 90% or more overnight would be a killer for me - and I expect most people.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RISK TO GOOGLE ITSELF

In the last year in the UK we've seen massive media comapnies and large corporations that have existed for decades being ripped to shreds.
Established institutions, names that trip off the tongue of just about everyone in the country. Wiped out or their credibility ruined.

I'm not talking about penny-ante start up companies. I'm talking massive multi BILLION dollar corporations and institutions that have existed for 50, 60+ years

    News International?
    BP?
    The Metroplitan Police?

The credibility and indeed prospects of these institutions has been shattered. Blood has been let, top people removed and confidence destroyed.

The Metroplitan police continues to exist because there is no alternative despite several ongoing court cases that will see senior officials imprisoned in the near future.

BP has taken a nose dive (despite not being British and currently having less than 50% of it's revenue from petroleum, but there you go).

New International has more executives in jail than working it seems, and yet more in court or busy trying to avoid prosecution. The News of The World, perhaps the most iconic newspaper in the country went with it.

You think this couldn't happen to Google?
Think they are immune from scandal, mistakes, competition?
    Parts of the media would love to jump on them;

"Chr*me reports web activity to authorities"
"G&&gl£ sells personal data to advertisers"
    "G&&gl£ CEO in $£x scandal"
"Yousearch offers free [insert item here] to use their engine"
"G%%£le censors site in direct competition"

The list of possible banana skins goes on and on.

One day, one of these will bite them. But here's a well known fact that we keep ignoring.

No company that does not operate in a monopoly retains the number one spot in any field in commercial industry for more than 2 decades.

It's never happened in the history of anything...ever.

Not Coca-Cola, not Wrigleys gum, not your mammas homemade apple pie. Nothing...ever.

Sure some do well, some continue, some come back and regain number one after a hiatus.

But no company in any commercial [none monopoly] sector in any industry EVER RECORDED has retained number one spot past a third decade without at least a break.

The vast majority, including some massive businesses never make it past 15-18 years (which is where most fall away)

It takes 20 seconds for someone to say "Man that thing that G&&$£ did was really bad, I'm not going to use them again" and change their default search engine to Yahoo or Bing, or anywhere."

In effect G are 20 seconds away from meltdown 100% of the time if they are seen to do something asinine enough to drive a good percentage of their users away.

Let's face it, they aren't well liked by many. Just the fact that they are "big" is seen as a reason to treat them with suspicion and look for alternatives for many. It only takes a push...

And I confidently predict G&&£gle won't be the ones to break the "third decade" rule. They are now well into their second decade. You do the math.

They are the tallest tree in the forest - and there's a little maxim/truism I've read about what happens to the tallest tree in the forest.

Don't make the mistake of putting all your eggs in one basket, because one day, thorugh no fault of your own, there may not even be a basket.

Diversify your referrers. Think like a business, not a lackey to Google.

Google are awesome for forcing people to join social networking sites and sharing ideas/tips to get better ranks on Google. It's a lot easier to learn online than ever before.

If Google start taking advantage of their 78% market share by increasing add prices even more i might lose interest and use Bing, seeing as it's on the rise.
