but it would take a massive amount of collaboration and timing to do it.

SO its not very likely. but these guys do have control over bots...

and they have given warning ahead of time before, and followed through...

Basically, you'd have to take out the root nameservers (the ones that have addresses for the .com, .uk, .net Top Level Domain servers), and you'd have to keep them down longer than their TTLs (Time To Live) which at which time sub-domain and caching servers would refresh and break. Even so, not all cachers would bother refreshing immediatly after the TTL expires, and chances are there will be multiple redundant lines you'd need to clog up as well.

TL;DR, there is still a dependency on nameservers further up the DNS hierarchy, but good luck.

I don't see why they'd want to do that, as that's their main method of communication -or maybe their only method. Remember, anyone can make a post or video and call themselves Anonymous. It's not clear how cohesive a group it is.

They supposedly threatened to take down Facebook a few months ago. Last November 5 was supposed to be a huge event, and nothing. So, whether you like them or not, I wouldn't expect too much.

They decided not to since thats how OCCUPY groups were contacting each other & organizing their dates/times/locations & all that good stuff.

However I wouldnt be too worried about them taking down the entire internet. Without the internet, there is no Anonymous. lol they would be putting themselves out of 'business'

DNS isn't the entire internet anyway, it's just domain to IP(s) resolution, you can visit sites, connect to other servers etc...without a domain. But like I said above they won't succeed in shutting down DNS regardless.

Ah but we don't know that do we? They may just be Minute Men 2000. The Internet display might just be some show and spangle for whatever they really are. I like to believe in Heroes. Not sure that will be these guys or not. Their ability to mess with gov sites is pretty impressive - but who's side are the on? Free people or are they after the power themselves?

I agree, they are kooks. My last post was partially tongue-in-cheek. I would, however, like a complete statement from them about what their ultimate philosophy and motives are.

Actually - I haven't seen any statements from Anonymous themselves to indicate that this is actually something they are planning to pull off or even attempt. The only thing I've seen is from others stating that is what Anonymous is planning. So it seems to be just a hoax at this point of time. I'm pretty sure if this was THEIR plan, they'd be saying so somewhere.

We'll know tomorrow though, won't we? I just hope if it's not a hoax, they make their point, whatever it is, then back off fast and let us do our work (or play) without further interference.

The Internet is not a single network - its a network of networks. True in 2003 there were only about 40,000 BGP routes required - but that's still a lot of routers. DNS is a hierarchical system - so the crackers would have to take out ALL name servers in order to bring down the entire Public internet. Plus after taking down all DNS servers, they would have to truncate all the /etc/hosts file on all client machines. Impossible? I'm old enough to know better than to say that - but probable? by just hacking the root name servers? doubtful.

They clearly don't know how the internet works. Most the root servers are in the U.S and all of them copies besides 1...and that one is hidden. I'd imagine since 50% of the worlds inet traffic goes through VA where i'm sure a number of the root servers are, they'll need an extraordinary amount of bandwidth to do anything, which is good, I hope they fail. Is sad they feel the need to flood things for no reason. All they're going to do is strip away the freedoms we have online even further, because anything the Gov wants to justify removing something they can just use them as example as to why.

BTW even if they take out a root server, like I said they're all copies anyway, and so are all the thousands of regular DNS servers that are around the world. So no they won't be shutting down the internet.

Yeah I know. Even if they do succeed, you can still type the IP of the website into the address bar & voila, you're connected.

No need for the DNS if you already know where its directing you to.

Technically, for most websites, that isn't really legal. They ARE rationing IPs! So you would have to add the name to your hosts file.

What does the IPv4 exhaustion have to do with this? And not legal, what? it's absolutely legal to connect to any server via IP direct(that's legal to connect to, to begin with that is...) instead of resolving from DNS first, in fact in order for your browser to connect to a site when you type in a domain, it ask a DNS server for a IPv4 or IPv6 for that domain to connect to. So you're connecting to IP's regardless, DNS is just for the user, to help them remember addresses easier and for load balancing and a few other things, but in the end IP is *required*. So no it's not illegal and never will be.

BTW most of you aren't on IPv6 yet but if you are you can reach Google via IPv6 at
http://ipv6.google.com or http://[2001:4860:8009::68] Notice the bracket? they're needed for IPv6

for IPv4 which everyone should be on can just do http://72.14.204.100 for google.com

I know I have seen clearer rules but...

things like:

4.2.3.7. Registration

ISPs are required to demonstrate efficient use of IP address space allocations by providing appropriate documentation, including but not limited to assignment histories, showing their efficient use.

As for the IP thing? NOW we know you don't pay much attention, and have never setup a web server really. Ever hear of NAME RESOLUTION!?!?!?

Name-based

Name-based virtual hosts use multiple host names for the same IP address.

With web browsers that support HTTP/1.1 (as nearly all now do), upon connecting to a webserver, the browsers send the hostname from the address that the user typed into their browser's address bar along with the requested resource itself to the webserver. The server can use the Host header field to determine which web site (or virtual host), as well as page, to show the user. The browser specifies the address by setting the Host HTTP header with the host specified by the user. The Host header is required in all HTTP/1.1 requests.

For instance, a server could be receiving requests for two domains, IANA — Example domains and IANA — Example domains, both of which resolve to the same IP address. For IANA — Example domains, the server would send the HTML file from the directory /var/www/user/Joe/site/, while requests for IANA — Example domains would make the server serve pages from /var/www/user/Mary/site/. Equally two subdomains of the same domain may be hosted together for example a blog server may host blog1.example.com and blog2.example.com

The biggest issue with name based virtual hosting is that it is difficult to host multiple secure websites running SSL/TLS. Because the SSL/TLS handshake takes place before the expected hostname is sent to the server, the server doesn't know which certificate to present in the handshake. It is possible for a single certificate to cover multiple names either through the "subjectaltname" field or through wildcards but the practical application of this approach is limited by administrative considerations and by the matching rules for wildcards. There is an extension to TLS called Server Name Indication which presents the name at the start of the handshake but browser support for this extension is not yet wide enough for public sites to rely on it (in particular it is not supported by Internet explorer on Windows XP).

Furthermore if the Domain Name System (DNS) is not properly functioning, it is difficult to access a virtually-hosted website even if the IP address is known. If the user tries to fall back to using the IP address to contact the system, as in http://10.23.45.67/, the web browser will send the IP address as the host name. Since the web server relies on the web browser client telling it what server name (vhost) to use, the server will respond with a default website--often not the site the user expects.

BASICALLY, ARIN has asked all webhost users to conserve IP addresses and use named based resolution when possible. THAT is why hosts often ask WHY you need IP addresses, and why you can use an IP address to go to a website and end up with a different website, or none at all.

BTW most of you aren't on IPv6 yet but if you are you can reach Google via IPv6 at

IPv4 is still the standard. It will likely be a while before everyone is on it. A LOT of equipment isn't compatible. At least ipv6 is supposed to have enough IP addresses. But they ARE planning on using it for a lot of things. HEY, 4 billion once sounded like a LOT.

How the hell is typing an IP into the address bar Illegal?

Ahhh of course they could announce their own BGP routes that would be cool and take out massive sections of the internet. I did hear that one of the members worked for a Tier 1 ISP so this could be done. What with OpenBGP and setting up your own BGP router you could effectively blackhole whole sections of the worlds internet traffic but it certainly cant be done by taking down the 13 or so Internet Name Servers.

You can type ANYTHING into the address bar you want! I never said you couldn't! What I said is that you can't necessarily reach a site by giving the IP of that site because iana has said it is not legal to needlessly assign muliple IPs to the same machine! So MANY sites have the SAME IP address!!!!

Lol...the whole idea and formation of the internet was to create a communication system of networks routed through thousands of possible paths that communication would withstand a a nuclear war...

I have no idea where that article came from (or what forums the author is browsing), I don't even see it being mentioned on AnonOps (anon's twitter) at all. And Anonymous has denied their desire to hack facebook many times already, which was a false rumor. There is no reason for them to take down the whole internet.

The news media just likes to run with a story anytime someone says something and claims to be from Anonymous. Anyone and everyone can claim Anonymous but if it's not on the main Twitter account, where they actually do announce and carry out major attacks, then it's mostly BS. The news outlets know this but they don't care as long as people go read their stories.

So whatever happened to the idea that working online gives you the freedom to take some time off whenever you please? Take the day off - it's Saturday for cripes sakes.

thats never quite worked out for me. As a matter of fact, it seems if i just "think" about taking some time off, some huge crisis hits and it has to be dealt with.

Well the internet is still up (big surprise)

However my laptop (that I JUST bought brand new 3 months ago) is screwed up. The video card is going out. WTF man....

Then they want me to pay for the shipping?!! No other company makes you pay for shipping when you're under warranty. NOPE. JUST TOSHIBA. This month has just been ridiculously horrible.

COME ON UNIVERSE, YOU HAVE 12 HOURS LEFT TO MESS UP SOMETHING ELSE, BETTER GET TO IT, WE DONT WANT ROB TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR HAPPY FOR THE REST OF MARCH!

Nope. That is too much to ask for.

Actually, most companies nowadays make you pay for shipping something back even when under warranty.

I just had a horrendus experience with Newegg. I needed a new ide hard drive and all they had were refurbs. Not a problem I thought,while there were no refunds they would exchange if there was a problem.
I also purchased a 3 year warranty ( I don't normally buy those,but I had a specific reason this time).
Any way,the HD arrived DOA. I had to return it,and I had to pay the return postage.(I told you almost all companies require you pay to return nowadays).
I get a replacemnt drive and it was DOA too. Of course they wanted me to return it again,and again for me to pay the postage.
I blew my stack. The hard drive was only $50. I had already spent another $15 for packaing and return postage,and now they wanted me to pay another $15.
No Way.
I emailed them and explained that since they have been in business I have spent literally thousands of dollars with their business,and I am not paying the return postage and I do not want another hard drive sent to me. I want a full refund.
After a lot of going back and forth, the ended up refunding me my postage and the cost of the refurb hard drive, but they weren't going to refund the $16 for the extended warranty!!
Again, after much back and forth I managed to get that back too,but it took a lot of time and effort and persistence to do it.

HOW do you know? I am on EAST COAST time, in the US, and it is 7:57! So they have about another 4 hours! PT gives them SEVEN hours!

I can't see it happening - but it would be fun (as a social experiment) to see what happens!

Teenagers who are addicted to tweeting will go mental!
Electricty usage will totally drop off.
People might actually go outside and socialise .. !

I dunno man.. I had to send my PS3 to Sony for service (it was out of warranty by like 2 months) and they STILL fixed it for free, AND paid for the shipping.

My old GPS was recalled, they sent us a brand new one & just had us put the old one in the box & ship it back. The prepaid label was included.

This is literally the first time I've been told I had to pay for shipping, when I'm still under warranty.

What makes it even worse, its not even 3 months old. It was supposed to be BRAND NEW when I got it, not refurbished. So why am I having this problem in the first place?!

I paid them 400 dollars for the laptop. 3 months later, video card is shot - Now they expect me to pay MORE money to get it working when it shouldn't have messed up in the first place?! Hell no man.

Luckily I have her laptop that I can use in the mean time, but none of my stuff is on this one.

Well my internet was down for several hours today. Um.....I shut my computer off and took my dog out.

Everything looks normal now though.

Well, it's a half hour to midnight here on Mountain time and except for the "downtime" I experienced similar to Sal (LOL), things have been fine here.

But the way terrorists like "Anonymous" work is they keep you guessing and stressed and then strike when you least expect it. By the way, if their overall purpose and principles are so just and meaningful, why do they have to hide behind a false name?

Anyway, I'm glad I still had the Internet today because I've been working on posting content.

Few Problems with routes in Asia but nothing major to report! The global traffic index is relatively low but Its a coincidence! Its definitely not "Anonymous" I would have known about it if anything untoward was going on globally!..Trust me ;-)
