You JUST won the Half Billion Mega Millions -> What would you do in the first 24 hours?

I rarely play the lottery. I think the last time I played was the last time it got to a "record" high a year or two ago?

540 million is the mega million. So, I put $10 on it. Of course, I literally have a better chance at getting struck by lighting hundreds of times before I win, but still, its fun to play "if I won.."

If you won it, how do you envision the next 24 hours of your life?

Myself:

  • Call in to work sick. If my boss asked me with what, I would say 540 MILLION DOLLARS and a fake cough. (of course the cash option is less, and that is taxed, but you are still looking at 200 million with crude math in my head right now).
  • Call my ex wife, laugh hysterically, tell her to Google me + lottery.
  • Call my dad , sister , grandparents , tell them all to quit their jobs ASAP if they so please
  • Take a poop in my annoying neighbors yard
  • Update my status on Facebook, and offer the first 10 comments $10,000 as long as they comment their: paypal e-mail and tell a joke that actually makes me laugh out loud
Those are things I would definitely do in the first 24 hours.

Interested to hear other, more responsible people's responses. Not talking long term investments, I am just talking about things you can get done in a 24 hour period after you found out!

You literally have a better chance at getting struck by lighting hundreds of times, WHILE being attacked by a gang of polar bears in Central Park - but let's not lighten the odds

Maybe I'll set the wheels in motion to start my own Super Pac -

Ha, I love watching Stephen. I remember him on the Daily Show.

But.. you can't win if you don't play .. SOMEONE has to win it.

With my luck? I'd die of a heart attack when they handed me the check and my sons would be rich

What I would not do is be an ass....to anyone. It's one thing to be arrogant when you have earned huge amounts of money - quite another when the wealth is created by a stroke of luck.

First thing - put expert legal and financial advisers on retainer.

I'd share equally with my sons - give some away - and do what I damn well please after that.

I hope on this drawing there are multiple winners - that's too much money for one person.

I only work part-time now - but I would call in "rich". And I'd give a healthy check to everyone I work with to share the windfall.

My respect for you just went up yet another notch. Smart.

I will never put a dime toward a lottery so I guess I don't get to play. So...

The 24 hours after I don't win, I'll probably carry on as usual.

Oh I would. I am already so I wouldn't want people to think that the money changed me so very much.

Actually. I know I'd hire accountants and an advisor. I also know I'd invest in the ID silver processor. I'd stake a few claims of my own, too, then open them up as fee digs.

And I'd buy Ricky a major huge vanilla ice cream cone, and me a cheesecake and we'd sit and eat it while figuring out a tour route for a trip to all of the places I'd go right now if I could.

Then I'd just think about it while I took a month long trip and decide where to go from there. I know I'd use some of it to help restore the ecosystems somewhere. But I really would want the month to just chill and think about it before really digging into more than I'd need to take the trip and do some gem hunting.

    1. Actually try and convince my husband that we got all six numbers ( he is the biggest skeptic ever!!)
    2. Retain, attorneys, financial planners etc Change phone numbers/email addresses as well. Maybe form a trust so my identity is safe, I hate to say it there are a bunch of thieving grubbers out there.
    3. Go crazy for a few days (OMG, did I just win?!?!?!)
    4. Vacation/renovations on my house/buy investment property/overseas property/shop til I drop spree/college funds
    5. Distribute to my favourite charities and family. Maybe friends too if they are nice to me lol

Since I'm going to win the thing, this is something I've already thought about. The first thing I'd do is consult with an attorney and a financial advisor. Then I'd rent a place temporarily so mooching strangers and and pretend friends couldn't find me. Then I'd come forward and claim the prize. After that it gets interesting.

There are about 40 people I'd give a million dollars to. About 20 more I'd give 100k to. And probably about 50 I'd give between 10k and 50k to ... some people right here on the forum. Of course some would go to different charities as well.

I'd give all of my websites away except the domain of my name. I'd give away the house I live in after I built a new house (it wouldn't be as lavish as you might think). Of course I'd buy a few new toys.

Then the fun would start. I'd love to walk around town just handing out $100 bills to people to see the look on their faces. Or tip a really good waitress $500 and make her whole week. Stuff like that would be one of the best things about it.

  • Dennis is Buying!! The Dom Perignon is on the Winner!

If no one wins the jackpot, the money will be added to the jackpot for the next drawing. The pot could climb to an estimated $975 million.???

Update: Maryland lottery officials announced early Saturday that their state sold what could become the world's largest lottery payout of all-time, but it wasn't immediately clear if that ticket holder would get sole possession of the $640 million jackpot or have to split it with other winners.

That could make a grown man cry, 3m, but my wife and I had an even "closer to the motherlode" ticket once. We got the first four numbers right. I was getting excited! But then we missed the 5th number by one, and missed the last number by two. So very close. For as close as we were to a huge payday, we only won $25.

Id do nothing.... different. Well try not to, haha.

Then i'd put 95% in a term deposit for a short period 30-90 days so i cant access it & make rash decisions - id use the 5% leftover to get some expert advice & try live normally until the term deposit matured... then i'd prob put 10% in cash account, 10% in a play account, buy a modest house, a modest car - 50% leftover investment properties & the other 50% leftover in dividend producing shares & live off that for the rest of my life - THEN my income from them would be split 10% cash, 10% play, 10% charity, 35% property & 35% more shares - something like that

As a matter of fact, not one of the 3 big winners has come forward with a winning ticket.

This baffles me...not one person has come forward and claimed their winnings.

Duplicate Mega Millions lottery tickets raise questions | azfamily.com Phoenix

The 60 numbers on one ticket are the exact same as the tickets on the second ticket. Row after row, the numbers are identical on both tickets.

At first, Bleichroth thought the Quick Pick machine accidentally spit out a duplicate ticket. But a closer look at the validation numbers at the bottom of the tickets reveal they are not copies.

“It made us pause and say how can this be?” Bleichroth said.

Bleichroth said the odds of getting 10 identical sets of numbers are higher than winning the lottery itself. Either that or something is wrong, she said, so she contacted 3 On Your Side.
