Maybe I am just not as Politically Correct Understanding As Others

Today it came out that someone in a niche business I participate in on occasion, meaning I buy a product or two,(not internet, but physical products) was charged and signed an admission of guilt to swindling one of his customers out of 500K over the past few years,
Of course there are several threads on FB about it, I haven't even bothered to check any forums, but I am sure there is a buzz there too.

But anyway. My thought when I heard it was first disbelief and shock, then disgust.

Then I saw some people poest a email he sent out that said....I hear some rumours are going around about me,let me assure you that my store is still open and I amm in business despite these rumours (I'm paraphrasing,I don't remember the exact text.)

Then a few hours later someone posted a copy of a signed document that came from the state attorneys office where the guy had admitted guilt and plea bargained down.

Of course now I realized he had lied in the first email, that he knew exactly what the "rumours" were about.

So as in all these forums and chat places, people are tyalking about it.
The shocker to me is how many are saying, crap like he made a mistake but he is still a good guy, or well,he may have done it but he never stole from me.

WTF is wrong with people.
He bilks a customer of his out of $500K!!

I would be screaming for the police to lock him up immediately. That is not like he made a "mistake". A mistake is when I owe you 75 cents in change but give you 7 cents. Thats usually a mistake, but defrauding a customer over the years to a tune of 500k, nope, no mistake.
What is your take. Is it a m"mistake" that everyone should ignore, or should they lock him up and throw away the key?

My take is you are old school . . . same as me.

    Kim

Is that really any different to people on the WF claiming that someone is "one of the good guys", or a "great marketer" when there is evidence they are ripping people off?

That's my way of saying I'm with you and Dennis on this.

    Me too Kim.

... and exactly why I hate 'political correctness'

    it's like a 'white lie'

    a lie is a lie is a lie -

"a nose is a nose is a nose, but a runny nose is for Chiffon!"

(however with our cock-eyed justice system, many innocent people cop a plea because to defend themselves with the risk of losing would bankrupt them or they have no money in the first place to even place a bet)

this is probably theoretical and not even applicable to dollars and sense where there would probably be tangible evidence/proof - but just had to mention as you never know which way the wind blows.

    i say lynch him!

I'm older than Kim, Dennis, and Patricia, Tin - and probably Alfred (I guess I could look that up), which makes me be of even "older school" thinking.

Friends of mine were bilked out of $500,000 over a perio of 20 year by one of their employees - obiously a trusted employee.

The employee in now in prison - and will be there a while - as it should be.

I just turned 58 last month, though I probably shouldn't admit it.
I bet you are like me in that most guess you a lot younger than you are.

I always do the "Guess The Age" thing at the state fair every year because its a guaranteed winner for me and my wife always gets a prize...lol

In reality most people guess me in the mid to late 40s.

Yes Sir, but I haven't done much of that in years. When I started years ago I specialized in close-up magic, which of course is magic for very small crowds and usually just one on one. Then I got out of it for a good 10-15 years. When I started back in it I decided to focus on what is called mentalism, and related sciences so I now study palm reading,numerology,astrology/horoscopes,hypnotism and other things.Of course in all those subjects it involves the science of the mind and how it works.

Well, I am older than dirt -

... but I won't argue with you Don - if you want to think you are older - be my guest.

I will tell you how old I really am -

      drum roll

Old enough that I won't say how old I am.

I do promise never to grow up though.

So you will always be older.

Well, "admissions of guilt" are often signed to save someone ELSES face and signed under the threat that something FAR WORSE ay happen. That is one reason why so many innocent people plea bargain, etc.... I had $4000 STOLEN from me in such a situation. They owed ME far more!

HECK, they OFTEN include a threat against disclosure! The contract I signed there included such a threat. I tend to keep some things secret anyway, I don't really know why, but I would almost WELCOME their suing me now because I have prepared what should be a good case against that garbage. Of course I would need help to take it to the supreme court.

I don't know WHO you are talking about, or the circumstances involved. I HATE the idea of "political correctness". HELL, I was spoken to TWiCE in the past month about the fact that I shouldn't be so direct with the truth. The reason? Because it puts everyone ELSE on the defensive, and could be misconstrued. I was also TOLD to sign a contract after I said over a decade earlier I wouldn't, etc.... Because "It is standard", etc... BULL!!!! One person, with a smile, even said I was probably the only one that ever bothered to read it.

BTW Amount doesn't matter! $.50 on a charge resubmitted knowingly from an old charge is a FELONY! It is credit card fraud and definite THEFT! $500,000 for a feature that was discussed and not properly removed is an honest mistake and an oversight.

It almost seems more like cultish thinking than political correctness per se. Cult followers will rationalize and be forgiving towards the crimes of their leaders or one of their flock (unless the crime is criticizing the dear leader).

OK. For the record, I'll be 58 next month.

    As far as the question at hand;
I HATE P/C! It's simply a means of covering the truth.
And worse, it has taken some of the greatest literature out of the public school system because of the language used at the time of writing. i.e. Mark Twain, Steinbeck, and more.

I can't stomach a thief or liar. Extenuating circumstances not with standing.

    As far some of the marketing techniques refered to in an earlier post;
When I first got into IM 2 copywriting books were recommended.
    I can't remember the titles but, I couldn't find a copy of the #1 but, I did get #2.
(It's packed away for our move to Florida).
At any rate, the author made a distinction between 'lying', and 'cheating'.
'Cheating' is using an actor to profess a legitimate testimonial.
The claim is truthful even though the testimonial is not legitimate.
'Lying' is, well, lying. Making an untruthful claim about the product.
So, if I say "Frank Kern is one of the good guys", even though I've never met him and
and never used any of his products, my perception of him is that I like him, and, I think he's a good guy.
Is it wrong for me to make that statement?
In the marketing world that's 'cheating' and is perfectly acceptable.
