I think the person who typed that up deserves a pat on the back because I thoroughly agree.

Age creates wisdom, but on the flipside it can also create petulant bitterness.

on the flip side... the day I stopped assuming that everyone on forums I visit (especially the older members) know more than I do or know better than me is the day I started making money.

The real money is in figuring out how to do things yourself. Because that way you can make a killing doing something not everyone is doing (until someone puts it in a WSO..

)

Keep track of the OP quote - see how long it takes for that member to either bitch about WSOs or to just disappear altogether.

The warnings of the "elders" should be used to wake people up to the fact that they are in for some hard work and if they aren't serious, and don't have a little knowledge of the field, they are in for a rough time.

Some people will ignore warnings and think of them the way the guy in the OP quote sees them.

Others will take heed and do what is needed so they don't wind up being part of the statistics.

Guess which of the above two attitudes will be the successful one?

Well here's my 2 cents worth, as relative WF newbie.

There's a difference between my elders and elder members of a forum. I have the ultimate respect for my elders but respect solely for being a forum busy-body? Wait a minute not so fast.

There are several no nonsense elder members that I truly respect because they are knowledgeable and there are others that don't have anything better to do than type pseudo-knowledge on the forum. They know who they are.

Never mistake activity for action. I know that every bite my family eats is because of a byte I sold at one time or another. Thousands of posts doesn't mean they've ever made one dime. It just means they spend plenty of time on the forum. I've been at this since 1997, so an elder to me is someone who's been at it since 1996.

Let's face it, if you pose long enough even you'll start to believe it. Pseudo-knowledge spreaders have been passing off rehashed advice as their own for thousands of posts, and now want to pass for wise sages.:rolleyes:

Now I don't want any of the elders reading this to get uptight. Descending from my soapbox now.

Rehashed doesn't mean wrong but don't pretend as if you brought it from the mountain top on your personal slab of stone. We all know the difference between advice given from a person who has done it and someone who's repeating what they heard someone else say.

If I'm going to accept advice from a guru, then I need to know that he knows what he/she is talking about. Running a business requires a tad bit more savvy than keeping your hand off a hot stove.

Edit: I also want to add that this doesn't apply to all elders so only posers need take offense. The point I'm trying to make is high post count does not automatically mean knowledge.

Hmm...I haven't really seen anyone pretending they're "all that and more" lately. Perhaps I don't go to the main forum enough anymore.

Everyone needs to make those judgments. The "hot stove" wasn't meant to be a practical example, but a illustrative one. My purpose in making it is that "rehashed" is a convoluted term that really means little anymore because it's been misused so much.

Edit: I also want to add that this doesn't apply to all elders so only posers need take offense. The point I'm trying to make is high post count does not automatically mean knowledge.

I don't see why anyone would take offense to what you said, you didn't say anything that hasn't been said 1,000 times here already. High post counts can mean nothing, but in my experience a majority of people with high post counts have a pretty good idea of what they're talking about.

One reason for the high posts counts is that they are successful enough they don't have to spend a lot of time working. They take a lot of breaks here to socialize, give advice, and stay on top of their game.

Of course, another reason is what you alluded to, high post counts can mean a person isn't successful so they spend a hella lotta time here. I think that's the exception though, and not the rule. I could be wrong. I know I only need to work an hour or two a day to maintain my income, and I do this full time, so I might "project" too much onto others.

There's another way to look at this if you're the type that looks at post counts, and that is the "average daily posts" a person has racked up over the course of being here. It's on their profile page. Mine is in the neighborhood of 1.88 the last time I saw it, but that doesn't count any of the posts down here in the basement. (Love you guys

)

And to be honest, when I see a poster who has 1,000 posts and a 5 week tenure I tend to discount their genius.

But I have seen people with new dates regarding joining this forum with 10 posts that I know I should be paying attention to, as well.

And apperently even though I'll be 60 this year I'm not an elder due to my starting point of 1997. I'll consider that a compliment.

Another reason for my lack of participation there is the opposite of the elders, it's the "youngers" that have a general lack of respect for other people that bug me. That, and they seem to start threads asking for advice but only want to hear from people that agree with them.

Same here. I started in 1997 and was earning my living online long before I'd even heard of the WF, probably before I'd even heard "internet marketing" as a term. This is a great resource, but it just goes to show you, a person doesn't need to buy courses and systems and whatever to be successful ... you just need to use your head for something besides a hair holder.

1999. Paid that price for domains and I was paying (if I recall) $25/month for single domain hosting (JaguarPC and Host4Profit). Every domain had to have it's own hosting account.

Then I got turned on to Reseller Hosting. I started my own hosting service and took on enough clients to cover the cost of the hosting account.

I was in heaven

Back to domain prices - we work with off line clients who STILL pay that for domains (and never heard of GoDaddy, etc.). They just don't know.

Don't want to piss on anyones parade BUT all the senior members in here always showed something worth while discussing marketing. Some don't know how to do proper SEO like me? Sure, but they have better understandings of other rules, so they don't need SEO... Maybe they don't know how to exploit Youtube with viral videos? Why should they? They have a solid base of paying customers.

And so on.

While I understand some views of this subject, I prefer to give elder folks major props for being around sharing knowledge, humor or just their simple presence.

For me, it's a Thank YOU.

I don't know how I missed this first time around.
My post count goes up about 10-20 a year,because I literally live in the OT.
If I actually have a question or need help, I will usually ask it here first,and if I can't get what I need then go upstairs,but for the most part the OT is the new WF imo. Why? Because when I first joined the group was small and we were all friends and we all would reach out and help each other. You have hit the nail on the head. Everybody's a guru. They all bought the same WSO that said "high post count = respect" and started posting in same nonsensical pseudo-guru language in an effort to increase their count.

Mind you the only thing they've ever really sold online is a 14 year old BMW key chain on eBay. Yes I know my contrary nature is coming out but perfectly good posts are repeatedly glazed over in the Main Forum and good advice is ignored.

Dennis they were mine too, I bought my domain from Network Nation and hosted with Pair. That's because they were the hosting company recoimmended by AutoRespnsePlus autorepsonder.

Was this your first product? Was it homerun instantly or did you have to tweak it?

My first online gig was an ezine called the Officeheadhunter weekly. I had a pretty decent list but a fried hard drive took care of that resource. There weren't any autoresponders and I was using a cheap program called MyEmail List. Man! Warriors just don't know how good they have it now.

My way back only goes to 1999 but it was up around Spring of 1998. I'd forgotten how corny I was. Defending spam and what not.

Content was not king and the same 5 articles sat there for 4 years. If I only knew then what I know now I'd be a multimillionaire. But without easy access to cheap outsourcers I had to learn everything and I wasted so much time. I needed the site so I learned HTML, needed graphics I learned Photoshop, needed a program I learned CGI. I didn't get it together and ready for full time until around 2005 and but Officeheadhunter will always be my first.

I still own the domain and I'm thinking about developing it for the next year or so and selling it on flippa when it turns 15.

It was my first product. It was right after Windows came out with XP service pack and it it "broke" most ebooks at the time.You could read them once but the next time you tried you got the error that is pictured.
Turned out there was a manual way of going into your system files to fix or rest it,whatever term you want to use.
I just hired a coder to make it into a batch file to run automatically and give it a pretty program design and boom,there I had it.
I would say the program itself was a pretty good product,because like it or not most people had ebooks that had the problem and I was the only automatic cure in town

As far as the sales page. I did none of it, fellow warriors offered to help me and they did. We don't find that kind of comradrie here anymore,which is also one of the main reason I stay down here. Here if I ask for help I get it with nothing expected in return,and I do the same for others.

The site itself is still up,but it is missing some graphics,which is why I used to wayback machine to show it.

My only bad experience was that someone who is still a member here,but at the time was a Mod, purchased it from me then immediately claimed it didn't work. Both myself and the developer tried to help him but he kept claiming nothin worked. We asked for screenshots of his problem,he wouldn't send any. I finally gave him a refund. THEN within a week or two he released his own product that did what mine did. I confronted him openly in the forum ( which I probably shouldn't have in retrospect) and of course he denied doing any wrong.
I was so angry I actually contacted Allen Say and asked him why the hell did he have thieves working as mods here. I got no answer but didn't really expect one. I left the forum for a while and when I came back,the guy was no longer a mod, though as I said,he is still a member here.

Oh, getting back to the website itself, there was a problem with the header fitting properly.Both the guy that did it for me and myself didn't know how to fix it. I was working at one of my state IT departments for my day job and happened to know the guy that did the states websites. One day I asked him to look at it, he did, took him about 30 seconds to fix it!

Anyway, that is the extremely long version of my first IM product!

Dennis,

Pair, the hosting company? If so, they're still around. That was my first host.

Mine, too. Well, except for the space I got at my ISP. The URL had a tilde in it.

I ran an email discussion list through Pair, until we hit 180 posts per day and got asked to move the listserv. Lots of people on there who went on to do well online. It was a lot of fun.

My "tilde" site got a surprising amount of traffic and feedback. Editorials about the growth of political intolerance and the evils of aspam (yes, in 1995), humorous stuff, "for sale" listings of non-sports trading cards, snd all manner of other odd things. It was basically a blog/catalog, before the term "blog" was coined.

Sadly, that's all buried on the drive of my now-defunct A3000. Some of it would make for an interesting retrospective.

As far as Mods here on the forum, nowadays I only know you,Paul,and Ken,and of course Pat in the PIPS forum. I'm sure there are at least several more but since I "try" to stay within most boundaries of decency I don't worry about who they are.

I'm sure there are at least several more but since I "try" to stay within most boundaries of deceny I don't worry about who they are.

Funny how that works, ain't it?

Ken and I are a third of the forum-wide moderators. There are a whole gaggle of mods in the sub-forums who do a lot of the work, too. And one who deftly polices the blogs. And, of course, Thomas, who handles so much through the help desk.

We could use a mod for this section, too, but you'd need someone with the patience of Job, the wisdom of Solomon, or the whip of a lion tamer with a nasty hangover in the middle of a bitter divorce. Oh, and they'd have to be a "local."

I actually made BoogieJack.com first, you know that site so I don't have to explain it, and later built my "tilde" site to use as a funnel to the .com. Besides I have my other forum to watch over,even though its slow.

As far as Boogiejack, I think I may have seen it years ago,though didn't know you then Dennis. Met you by arguing over some stupid post some female scammer was making in the main forum. But you know I meet the best people by arguing with them first.

I was aactually going through some really,and I mean really old files on an older machine I have and I found some kind of wedd\bmaster tools or tips or something like that ebook by some guy named Dennis Gaskill.

Kim, I remember long ago when someone first associated me with BoogieJack in a post here (might have even been Paul). I got a lot of PM's and emails with things like, "You're Boogie Jack?" ...and then they went on to say how they learned website design from my site, or that their college was using my book as the teaching text, or talk about some other connection we had. That took me by surprise, but I really appreciated hearing from so many that I'd helped.

And then a few days ago I bought a huge package of products from someone I know who had paid a small fortune to have them developed, and guess what I found in the package? One of the products "borrowed" content from my website and newsletter. The guy I bought the product from wasn't the one who did the dirty deed, he paid a ghost writer. I told him about it, and that ghost writer doesn't know it yet by he just lost a lucrative job.

So yeah, "old-timers" like you and Paul and me can be found in all kinds of little corners on the web.

I just can't fathom who would do that, or even why!

Maybe they think the world wide web is so huge, they'd never get caught.

But the phrase "It's a small world" counts on the net too, especially among online marketers, it then gets a bit smaller.

Terra, the "why" was pretty obvious, he was being paid well to ghostwrite, but he cheated on topics he didn't have any expertise in.

As for the small world, you got that right. I have a pretty loyal core of subscribers, many who have been with me over 10 years. They know my writing style, my humor, and my content ... and many of them look out for me. I haven't kept track, but I'd guess they've emailied me to point out where my content is being publishing on other sites at least 8-10 times, probably more.

I even had one guy write to me to ask about a new site I'd made. My name wasn't on it anywhere. The site is outside of the niche he knows me from. And yet, he knew it was my site. When I asked him how, he said he recognized my writing style. Maybe I should change my style now and then!

Don't all thieves do it for the money.

The why I was referring to was why risk your reputation as a writer because once it is tainted, your business will take the short route to destruction. I don't know, but thinking short term isn't really business savvy either.

But on the bright side, congratulations on your success!

I've been in the WF since the autumn of 2004 - and I have been online since...um....autumn of 2004...about 3 weeks before I fell into the forum. You can tell what areas I have mastered well enough to be able to discuss seriously because I don't open my mouth about the ones I'm still clueless about.

I go up to the main forums sometimes, but I don't stay long up there. The redundancy is ludicrous to me. Even someone only here for a few days should be able to see which subjects are getting worn even on a daily basis. I like it down here where I know more about a person than what their next product is. It's the OT that can be credited for everything I've learned and produced online.

Dennis - I think you're right. As long as we're the same person as Paul, we should just all have one account with one name, just to be honest about things, where we can login and wreak havoc in the basement. Who needs stickies when you have multiple personalities?

I couldn't believe the stupidity of the person/people that are writing that crap. Of course it wwas disheartening to hear I was the figment of someone's imagination. I keep expecting that person to wake up and tthen poof,I'm going to be outta here!

  LOL, That was about the only part of my body that was not hurting for months afterwards.

Yes I read it. I was honored to be in the mix, LOL, yet stupified that someone could consider me "fictional". I just don't FEEL fictional. I also think that Mr. Myers deserves much praise for his creative ability. It's a wonder he hasn't been globally hailed as the master yet. Well, maybe he has and just wrote that out of our world to avoid having to write our shock, panic, and indignation.

For some reason that reminds me of this story...

The doctor said, 'Joe, the good news is I can cure your headaches. The bad news is that it will require castration.
