Drivers behaviour was despicable. God help him if he did that here in the UK where jaywalking is extremely commonplace with people always popping off the pavement without looking to walk across the street.

If I saw a driver like that I'd go absolutely mental on him.

      You got that right.

What really irked me was the bystanders looking on and doing NOTHING!

HEY, he probably had a HARD day! He MISSED the guy, and that just made him more upset. In NY and NJ, there are a lot of people that ASK to be hit, and people go to great lengths to try to avoid them. That jaywalker was LUCKY he wasn't hit the first time.

You don't know WHAT is inside the vehicle, or what happened. ALL we know is that the pedestrian asked to be run over, the vehicle TRIED to avoid it. Something happened, so they wanted to hit the jaywalker to HURT, not kill, him. They STARTED to drive off, and something ELSE happened, and they went back to knock him down for good measure.

I have had computers almost hurt, drinks splashing because of it, food hurt, etc... because of jaywalkers. Someone in that vehicle could have been burned. Expensive chemicals could have been destroyed. Who knows. And that jaywalker really didn't care.

Get away with you lad. What on earth are you going on about Steve?

The driver of the vehicle on purposely drove straight into him and even went so far to drive onto the sidewalk to mow him down.

If he had anything dangerous on board, yeah sure, that was really, really responsible to drive onto the sidewalk with the intent to seriously hurt the pedestrian.

And not just that but then gets out of the vehicle and kicks the man in the face when he's already hurt and down on the ground.

And you think that's okay? Acceptable behavior?

      Blimey! Good grief.

      Unbelievable.

ACTUALLY, the jaywalker walked into traffic, and seemed to hurry off. Any dangerous stuff would have been hurt by the sudden stop.

And not just that but then gets out of the vehicle and kicks the man in the face when he's already hurt and down on the ground.
It seemed like that took a LONG while!

I'm just giving a possible explanation. I suffered a LOT from such jaywalkers, and NEVER so much as BUMPED one. I am certainly NOT saying I would do any such thing, ONLY that I feel the guys pain.

Yeah may have a point there....something going on in the van, perhaps making love to his girl friend or wife when driving, then this goon walks out and spoils it!!!

then the driver gets out and as he walks over to help the jaywalker, he accidently slips and kicks him in the face....poor bloke LOL

Did you even BOTHER to look at the video? Look at it AGAIN! Notice the jaywalkers stride, the speed of the vehicle, and how quickly the jaywalker "recovers"!

        1. A jaywalker is walking across, and likely kind of stopped.
        2. He starts to run for it.
        3. The vehicle slams on the breaks, and goes MAYBE a couple inches into the jaywalker.
        4. The jaywalker runs quickly along to the sidewalk.

The guilt is 100% the JAYWALKERS! to this point.

        5. The jaywalker then walks into the sidewalk.
        6. THEN the driver decides, for whatever reason, to hit the guy to knock him down, NOT to run him over.
        7. They start to leave, probably talking, and watching the guy,
8 A guy gets out to knock hi down again.

As for chemicals? Maybe a kid in the backseat had a jar of paint open. Maybe there was a leaky container of drano they just bought. WHO KNOWS? Stopping short could make a minor fixible problem into a cause of blindness or DEATH! Maybe someone hit their head on the dash or something.

You figure that the COLISION is the only cause of damage? Ever hear of INERTIA? It is probably the BIGGEST cause of injury/damage ANYWHERE! Hell, a few years ago a woman DIED on an airplane! The cause? INERTIA! The plane went down, she didn't, and she hit her head against the floor of the storage bin! Don't forget the mcdonalds coffee incident. THAT may have been due to inertia!

The question I ask myself what would i do? My reaction would be, I think this guy is non compos mentis, for whatever reason, mental illness, drunk, drugs? this is what came to me instantly. I would have parked the vehicle and inquired if he was ok? ( if it seemed safe to do so) As I have experienced this type of thing in the past. Then my human empathy would click in if there was a health issue.
Clearly, it i`not normal to walk in front of moving vehicles.

The fact that that driver calmly walked over to him, kicked him hard in the face causing him to fall back hard and hit his head on the concrete, possibly causing extensive damage to his brain indicates the type of person the driver is!!!!
Then he walks away calm as you like. not caring if he had actually killed the man.

The first bump, I would NOT have gotten out. He did that intentionally, and obviously was good ENOUGH. f he got a bruise, a fractured hip, oh well......

The second time would NOT have happened with me, but they DID check! He seemed ok. SO, the guy went over the third time, which I would NOT have done, and knocked him down again.

Anything is possible, but we can only make assumptions based on what is seen. But if you ask me, it didn't APPEAR that the jaywalker was doing anything more than crossing the street. He didn't seem agitated or anything. But who knows...

Really? I have lived in NJ and NY my entire life. Outside of the city, I have not seen a jaywalking problem. Occasional idiots, yeah but it hardly happens all that much. I would also say that it probably isn't even all that common in the city since the cops write you a ticket for that.

Does it happen? Sure. But not as often as you are suggesting.

As far as this video - the incident started out as the fault of the jaywalker, but as soon as the jackass in the van deliberately ran him down he became a felon (anywhere here in the US, anyway). The final kick was totally irrational... no excuses for that guy. I don't care WHAT he had in his van or what kind of day he had either...

Clearly if that were the case, the first logical thing for the driver to do would be to cause yet another collision....

Why is it that *****NOBODY***** understands the TIME element!

            1. A lot of, and perhaps all, damage is done the FIRST time. Suppose it was a computer that fell on the ground, or eggs that got broken, or hot coffee splashed all over. A second "collision" may NOT make it worse. Besides, it wasn't REALLY a collision. ALSO, they could have sealed whatever, etc...

      Steve,

that was wrong of the driver not the jaywalker...
and if I had been an onlooker, I would have immediately called the police and reported him - the driver, for running over the pedestrian deliberately. That was assault with a deadly weapon - the vehicle being the deadly weapon, of course!

The pedestrian asked to be run over, you said...

      really?

I'm outta here - this just defies any sort of logic.

YEP! He literally RAN in front of the vehicle! He is LUCKY he wasn't killed when the vehicle hit him the first time, and HE was at fault THEN! That darn INERTIA!

Cars breaks are made to stop the car in a reasonable time WITH CONTROL! That means that they don't build them to lock and *****CAN'T***** build them to lock. Even if they DID build them to lock, how long would the tires last, and how could THEY hold the ground?

        That old INERTIA problem again!

That means you can NOT STOP the vehicle! You can only BRING it to a stop. That means there is time when it will be moving. If you run in front of a moving vehicle, DON'T start crying if it hits you! Heck, I once got my breaks "fixed" and they fell apart when I was on the freeway. The "repair guy" didn't properly screw one of the calipers right. Attempting to stop would have likely caused a 5 or more car collision(over THREE lanes!!!!), and I could have died. If a pedestrian had run in front of me, I wouldn't have bothered to stop, since they likely would have died anyway, and stopping would have hurt more people.

I'm not making judgments about AFTER that, but I understand how the driver could be upset, and he did mitigate the injuries.

Yeah, it wasn't bad enough that he knocks into him again? (sort of getting him out of the road...kind of a courtesy...:p)
Then, he has to get out of the van (I thought he was going to say, "are you all right mate?") and he kicks the guy in the face?? WTF?

Hunting a pedestrian down is pretty damned hardcore.

If someone walks into traffic without looking and gets hit -- well, that's what happens when you walk out in front of moving vehicles, too bad for you.

But to have drivers so nuts about it that they will actually hunt pedestrians down is just plain out of the movies. Or at least it could be hoped it would stay on movies and off our streets.

Between all the people using cell phones while driving and all the people who don't seem to "get it" that you don't just walk out into the street without looking, I'm surprised that we actually have a population crisis.

It seemed like that took a LONG while!

I'm just giving a possible explanation. I suffered a LOT from such jaywalkers, and NEVER so much as BUMPED one. I am certainly NOT saying I would do any such thing, ONLY that I feel the guys pain.

How about the two morons just standing on the sidewalk while the driver does a KO on the jaywalker.

THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS! :p

Even after the van drives off, the two guys still stand there like it's a typical day.

Dude was a taxi driver. Cab drivers are freaking insane here in San Francisco. I've seen them lunge their cars at pedestrians on several occasions who were crossing too slowly. But didn't actually strike them, like that maniac.

At least once a week I see a cab driver road raging and driving like a madman.

Jaywalkers here are a pain the butt, but what that guy did is disgusting. They did arrest him, but didn't charge him! No proof. Hello, video.

And I guess it was in Bloemfontein, poor Johannesburg getting the blame.

      WTF?!!

I would like to believe that I would have reacted to help, but you just don't know.

You see a man basically try to kill this guy with his car. Maybe the bystanders were too afraid he would run them over as well.

I can't judge them for not reacting, but once the dude drove away and they still just stood there, judged!

What about the car at the end of the video just drove in and parked, they all just left the guy sprawled out on the sidewalk.

That's unconscionable, that no one helped him once the aggressor drove off.

I know what you mean about the vehicle that turned and parked.

When I first saw it, I thought finally someone with some human compassion and was quite surprised and appalled when he kept driving through.

            <big sigh>

I just don't understand how people can just ignore and turn their backs on a fellow human being in need.
