A dog from my local shelter is a finalist in the ASPCA's Adopt-A-Bull national contest.

The contest is to counter the perceptions of pit bulls and highlight what great pets they can be. The contest ran for a year and our local Gunther (a deaf pit bull) was the fourth quarter winner. Now the ASPCA is taking votes online for the grand winner. PLEASE GO TO THE INK BELOW AND VOTE FOR REBECCA AND GUNTHER. No strings, only takes a minute.

Adopt-A-Bull Contest: Vote for Your Favorite Match! (site may load a little slow)

Why does it matter? As winner for the quarter, Gunther brought an award of $4000 to the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The HSSM has made tremendous improvements in the past 3 years under a new director - and if Gunther wins the overall competition - another $5000 goes to help with this great shelter's expansion. Gunther has won the hearts of all who have met him.

Last summer I rescued a sickly pit bull puppy. Today, at nine months, Gracie is a joy every day. She loves everyone she meets, every animal she sees - and is a gorgeous, healthy 65 lb pooch. My house would feel empty without her now.

Thank you so much for your help!

    I voted.

Pitts are like my favorite, Rotties, in that they have gottn a bad reputation, all due to messed up humans.

In the US, rotties are considered agressive and dangerous, yet in Germany, where they are from, there isn't a bit of a problem with rotty temperment.

It's the people, not the dogs. And I think rotties and pitts are the two breeds that have suffered the most abuse and lack of respect.

I agree, Kurt - There was a rottie for adoption (thru the local shelter) just today in the paper and I had to sit telling myself "you can't take on another dog right now".

The only thing dangerous about Gracie is if you one of her "best buddies" she might lick you to death. Of course, she considers all humans, other dogs and cats her best buddies.

      Stupid people make bad dogs.

        Hey Kay,

Here's a true story of my rotty: I let him out in the yard to do his business...A few minutes later, I checked on him and he had his head hanging really low, looking very depressed.

Then I notice a cat on the other side of the yard, about 20 feet away...I had to go out in the yard and chase the cat away myself, just so my "macho" rotty could go to the bathroom. The instant the cat's gone, he's happy and "goes about his business".

I told my ex he was lucky that we had 6 foot fences, because if any of the neighbors had seen what happened, he'd have to turn in his "rottweiler license". Afraid of a cat...In his own back yard...What a wimp!

Done, I agree with you both- only stupid people make bad dogs and the rotties have taken the wrap far to long for their irresponsible owners.

Voted. I have two skimpy lurchers, both rescued from dreadfull circumstances. Good luck with the fund raising. If we keep doing stuff like this, the message may one day get through.

Kay, I voted as requested. But I must say I did have some misgivings at first. When I was in the UK, pit bulls have a very bad press. But still, it is all for a good cause!

You got it, Kay -- as a rottie owner (the 3rd one now) I know how wonderful these animals are. It's time the world put the blame for bad animals where it lies -- stupid, lazy, and abusive owners.

I just went to vote and Gunther is a shoe-in. Look at all that personality and joy. How could anyone not love that dog?

It is indeed a pleasure to vote for such a worthy cause.

I have an acquaintance who recently rescued a pit. Another acquaintance adopted two pit mix "kids." All three pits are very sweet and friendly.

The love of my life, a rottie passed away in June. She would have been 12 in August.

Both breeds have had too much negative publicity. Bad people !!!

Done...you're right, stupid humans make stupid pets.

Of course stupid humans make a lot of stupid things.

But I won't get into that here.

Good luck with the contest Kay.

You guys quit making fun of my dog...He was just "sensitive".

Before I got him, I was "When I get a rotty, if anyone messes with me, he'll kick their butt!"

A week after I got him, it was "If anyone messes with my rotty, I'll kick their butt!" So much for protection...
