Vang Vieng, deep in the jungle of Laos, is a backpacker paradise where there are no rules. Last year at least 27 travellers died there, and countless more were injured -

It's midday on the banks of the Nam Song. Adam Axford, who's a part-time magician back in Ilford, is spending his last day organising drinking games. "Lime in the eye!" he shouts, inviting the crowd to join a contest involving downing a shot, snorting salt and squeezing lime juice into their eyeballs. "It doesn't get any more stupid than this!" he enthuses.
    I'd say he nailed it.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Got to feel very, very sorry for some of the locals.

What was once a pristine slice of wilderness country now utterly ruined by a bunch of rowdy backpackers looking for cheap thrills. Introducing debauchery, drug taking galore, loud thumping music and God knows what else foisted upon the local community. Awful.

Gorgeous place ruined by a distasteful bunch of louts. No wonder some of the locals will no longer swim in the river because of the superstition that the river now contains the souls of those many backpackers who have died here because of their utterly irresponsible behaviour.

What kind of an example is this to be setting the Thai people?

What kind of an image does this send out to the Thai people about young folks here in the west?

      Yrrr'ack.
