A tsunami warning for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and other countries around the Indian Ocean after an 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Aceh.

8.7 quake off Aceh triggers tsunami alert - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Magnitude 8.6 - OFF THE WEST COAST OF NORTHERN SUMATRA

I hope it isn't as big as the one that devastated the region in 2004.

Thoughts go out to everyone in the region.

This is a breaking story so there'll be more news to come as it unfolds.

The quake was felt as far away as Singapore, Thailand and India. There doesn't seem to be any early reports of casualties or damage, so it may be all good news.

      I hope so.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

Wasn't the only one either - there was a 8.2 in about the same spot about 45 minutes after that one. They were both severely shallow 16, and 22 km, but I can't remember which was which.

Indonesia has probably the most quakes of anywhere in the world. They are right up there with the Kermadec Islands, anyway - and Japan gets the Tail end of the Kermadecs

This is an abnormal occurrence though, even for a major quake. You get one mag 8 or better per year if any as an average - two in the same day is a bit unprecedented. It's the same area, though, so not exactly crazy.

The magnetic pole is still cooking toward Siberia at 40 miles per year and that is really fast. Matter aligns with the magnetic pole so when it gets far enough away from the geographic pole centrifugal force starts shifting the re-aligned matter around. It did this in the mid 1800's last, so we were overdue for some shifting. We might still end up with a pole reversal (magnetic, not geographic). Time will tell - but until that magnetic pole slows the heck down, we're going to have some shaking going on. So don't let anyone tell you WE caused that one.

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes, prayers and kind words

The last earthquake was a large Richter’s scale, but have a small magnitude and tsunami with a little damage related to the location of the epicenter and fault movement. The epicenter occurred outside the subduction zones close to the NER (Ninety East Ridge) and the fault movement was oblique with flat-dominated (sliding horizontally). In Meulaboh (Aceh) the tsunami that occurred just as high as 1.02 meter while in Lahewa (North Nias) was only one meter.
