They do missionary work all over the place.
This will be the 3rd time they are in North Korea.

Scares that crap out of us. Why they feel the need to go there, of
all places is beyond me.

Its not like they can fit in, or even speak the language.

I just don't understand what makes people willing to lose everything
(including there lives) to help people, that don't want the help.

My wife was a Missionary for 7 years.

There is no cookie cutter reason people are there.

Just ask them what they get out of it. Should be an interesting story.

  • I'm curious, how they are allowed into the country? Outsiders are watched like hawks in N. Korea...

Do they state their intended purpose?

From what i understand they sneak in and out. Which is pretty dangerous thing to do. I know they lost track of my wifes cousin last time.

Took him almost 3 months after schedule to get out.
Nobody knew if he was dead, imprisoned, injured.

Then one day, poof we get a call, he turned up in china safe and sound

In N. Korea, they don't call those kind of people missionaries...they call them spies.

And how do they proselytize ? By knocking on doors and handing out brochures?

They just passed a law in Kuwait that makes blasphemy punishable by death. Just food for thought.
(and it is not just a religious edict. It is now a national law)

People do what they want to do - or believe in doing. It does seem odd they would go into a country where they are not truly wanted and can't help publicly....especially when there are so many areas of the world that would need and appreciate their services.

Maybe the risk appeals to them as much as the "mission"?

I wouldn't say "to help people, that don't want the help". I was a missionary for two years...my oldest daughter went to guatemala (18 months) and my youngest just got back from dominican republic. We do it because we love people and we want to share with them, if they are searching for God and direction. You can only give to those that want...and love all along the way. It is the love...that we can give freely that motivates us.

Ken, you and your family must be worried sick.

I'm not sure why people put their lives in dangerous situations.

I have cousins who are on missions and go to dangerous places. They tell me because it is they feel they having "a calling" to help to others - like emrom said.

They'll make it home safely. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way.
