Hi Pete, yes that is my little boy. We were at a Rhodesian Ridgeback specialty dog show yesterday and he was attacked by one of the dogs there. He's quite battered and bruised, has some stitches on his face, under his eye and nose, and his nose is very bruised and swollen. Some puncture wounds, bruises and scratches on his hand and wrist.

It was NOT my dog that attacked him and I still love the Ridgeback breed, unfortunately you can get bad dogs in any breed. He's recovering and doing quite well today, poor little guy, it's his birthday tomorrow too and one I don't think he'll forget for a while.

WOW! I STILL credit the blood thinners for it, because hospitals are SLOW here, but I had TWO cases where I needed stiches recently. In one case, I LITERALLY had a split lip, where I could actually breath through a gill like cut. It took them over 3-4 hours to even LOOK at the situation, and I came out of both without even a scar. Hopefully your son will have the same luck, and be able to laugh about it. I hope he still likes dogs.

LOL, when I walked into the emergency room the receptionist looked up and said, "My God, quick, take him to room 3!"

I looked around at the others in the ER and the looks on their faces all seemed to say "Man, I'm glad I'm not him."

YEAH, it often takes them time JUST to put you in a room, but that could be a DEATH sentence! I was once an INVALID, not able to even MOVE move, and I could NOT use my legs! They put me in a room, and it took HOURS to get a urinal! THEN, it took HOURS to get a new one, or get it emptied. At NIGHT, they moved me to an even MORE isolated room, and I spent the better part of the night trying to get a urinal. THEN, in the morning, they said they would call a taxi for me.

Around 6am they put me in a wheelchair with my stuff in back where I couldn't see it, or use it. all the same, I had NO food, NO water, and only about enough power in the phone for ONE PERFECT call! If ANYTHING went wrong, like them putting me on hold for a minute, or a wrong number, it could be DEAD!!!!!! Of course, I had no access ANYWAY! ALL my stuff did was allow thieves to take it, and it prevented me from trying to move the chair. I spent the next SIX hours trying to ask passers by to go in and get the hospital to live up to their promise! Just to make ON lousy phone call! My flight, the one after that that I was put on, and the one after that, took off before I got to the airport! BTW I had insurance, and am white, not that either should or would play any part. And most of the doctors and nurses I saw were white.

        Sheryl,

I'm sorry to hear about your son, I hope he has a speedy recovery.

I know a little bit about what he may be going through as I needed 125 stitches in my face to repair a dogbite wound back in 1983. What a day that was.

It may take him a while to feel comfortable around animals in the future. It took me a long time. The trust will have to be built up from scratch if he is like most of us who suffered this kind of trauma.

But over time the wounds heel both physically and more importantly, mentally. If he has bad dreams about this that would be a normal reaction. I really feel for the guy...

Bill, my son absolutely loves dog and has done all his life, more so than my other kids. He is just such a natural with animals, so I really hope it doesn't scare him off to much.

He is fine with our dog today, in fact our dog slept on the sofa bed with me and Lachlan last night, so that's one good sign that at least he hasn't become fearful of his own dog.

125 stitches Bill - that must have been shocking. I am so thankful that Lachlans attack wasn't any worse than it was.

I think it's just silly trying to hide it, I love the breed, but there is no denying that he was attacked by one, so why hide it!
Every breed can lash out - whether from fear or aggression. It's ridiculous of them to pretend it didn't happen! Your son is accustomed to dogs so I don't think this will lead to a long term fear - I sure hope not.

I understand any breed association would be hesitant to have such an attack in the media -the spinning and fear blogs would have a ball with it. BUT - you can't hide something like this. To pretend all ridgebacks are friendly and harmless is like saying all brunettes can be trusted - it's stupid as each animal has its own personality and faults.

Very wise in my opinion to keep your family out of the spotlight - but frustrating that others didn't choose to tell the truth. Hope your son recovers fully and quickly!

That's really unfortunate, Sheryl. Worse than the skin wounds are the emotional ones possible. I hope, too, that this doesn't jade him against animals. Perhaps he can go back in his mind any move he made that might have prompted an attack? Maybe even just a smell he had on him from something at the time?

I hope it all comes out okay for him anyway.

Your poor kid Sheryl, I am so sorry he got bit. I think people here are proud of you for standing up and telling the real story to the media. It's a story that deserves to be told truthfully. There are far too many instances of cover ups. The guy who said wasp sting must have had a panic attack or something to act like such a dumbass. I do hope he won't be out for any kind of revenge after this.

Please let us know how your son is getting on later in the week. I'll keep him in my prayers.

As for the woman breeding pups with bad attitudes, I would hope there is some way to stop her before a lot of people have the same problem as your son. It just might be her own attitude that is messing up the dogs and not the dogs themselves. Turning this kind of dog around might or might not work.

Oh wow, so sorry Sheryl, and hope your little man continues to recover well. How dare the SACA lie about what happened! They do that, then the truth gets out, and they look even more untrustworthy.

Wow, sorry that happened to the little guy, Sheryl. My brother had something like that happen when he was young. It didn't scare the dog-lover out of him, he's owned dogs all his adult life. Hopefully your son won't be too traumatized.

Give him a big ol' Happy Birthday wish from the USA!
