Got my laptop back from Toshiba today, but unfortunately....

These idiots felt the need to go on my laptop, and delete MY norton 2012.

I had a 5000 day subscription on there. WTF man?!

I know for a fact my norton was NOT the cause of my screen flickering, so what gives?

Anyone ever send off a product for repair, just to get it back and someone's been messing with YOUR stuff?

Maybe they had to do it to run some diagnostic software. Personally I think they did you a favor. I hate anything Norton.

Norton is nasty. You should be sending Toshiba a bouquet of roses and a thank you note.

I think they secretly did you a favor ..... though they should have installed Kaspersky for you, Kaspersky > all

If you have a subscription though should just be able to reinstall. They may have deleted it b/c I remember using Norton even years ago and when trying to find an issue or file in registry that needed to be deleted Norton wouldn't allow it.

Isn't there a way you can renew it online?

Norton sucks, but you should have had an email activation info and if not, call them up and they can tell you how to reinstall and reactivate.

bloatware, slow, still a major resource hog even though they've made it better than before, pain in the a$$ to delete fully from computer etc....Kaspersky and other just run so much smoother and efficient in the background and detect better. Switched to Kaspersky on Windows like 5 years ago and stayed since. Same for McAfee, them and Norton are the McD's of the AV world and best known, however you want to eat a McD's or a gourmet burger joint (hell even Five Guys will suffice there lol)

Or you could get a Mac , virus' can actually make it on Macs but being executionable they don't do anything to the system, I use ClamXav and once in awhile it will find something.

Na - what pissed me off is this:

    The WAY they removed it.

I wasn't able to reinstall when I got my laptop back, because the "genius" simply deleted the folders from Program Files, instead of using the uninstaller.

So when I tried to reinstall, it kept saying "fatal error, previous version uninstalled improperly, blah blah" - there was no way for me to remove it to reinstall.

So I had to restore my entire laptop to factory default settings... that alone took 4 hours to do.

I sent the damn laptop in to get the graphics card repaired.

My norton had nothing to do with that. He had no right to go in & start removing MY stuff.

I swear, I'm furious with Toshiba at this point.

I'm STILL trying to get things set up man. And I havent even started with all my software yet

No you didn't, you could have done what I said and contacted Norton and they would have sent you both a download link and your activation key.

(At east that's what they used to do,its been a couple years since I had to do that for my customers).

I had my download link and my key already saved. That wasnt the problem.

The problem is the installer would not work. It kept saying "fatal error", because the idiot didn't uninstall it correctly.

It still 'thought' it was on the computer and kept telling me I had to uninstall it first.

And because all of the folders/files were gone, I could not uninstall it the right way, so I could reinstall it..

So, I had to factory reset the entire laptop to get the installer to work........

That's why I said CONTACT. I should have been clearer.I meant actually call them and explain. Either way I'm glad you will be back in business soon.

I did call them. They said there is nothing they can do.

Then I called Toshiba to speak with the tech who repaired my laptop, to try and find out exactly what he did so I could fix it.

They refused to let me speak to him, which is funny, since the repair slip that it came with specifically said who the tech was, his ID number, and all that.

But they would not let me talk to him. So when I asked to be transferred to a supervisor, they hung up on me.

Man... I really felt like reaching thru the phone & strangling their "customer service" idiots.

Anyway, yeah hopefully I can get most of my stuff back on here by tonight/tomorrow.. This whole situation is just stupid.

Nowadays tech support people just flat out lie to you.
They give false ID numbers and names. They claim supervisors aren't available, you name it,they do it.
Hopefully at least you learned to never buy another Toshiba again.
Good luck getting up and running.
I would also recommend a product called Shadow Protect by Storagecraft. and an external backup hard drive. It can restore your computer to the condition it was in from the time of the last backup. And you would conld have saved yourself a boatload of aggravation.

Edit, I just saw the orginal problem was screen flickering. If it was under warranty you did need to send it back reguardless. If not under warranty go local, that way you have more recouse than dealing with a company like Toshiba.

You know, back in the day Toshiba made some pretty good audio equipment......laptops,not so good.

It really used to be THE product when the real Norton owned it ( I can't remember his first name) but after he sold it it went downhill fast.

If you really wanted to reinstall it...do a search through the registry and remove the references there. Most likely it is a line in the registry that is killing the install.

I have been running Avast for my anti-virus and have been pretty happy with it.

You should still file a complaint with Toshiba about what they did. It's not right when someone messes around with your file and your softwares. That just ticks me off.

I gave up Norton years ago because it was a resource hog. However, Norton Internet Security Suite came preinstalled on my new computer so I figured I might as well use the free year since it was there. Guess what? I renewed it last wekk. I rather like it now. Whenever I've checked it's using just 2-4 percent of the system resources. It does a lot of it's stuff during idle time.

Not trying to talk anyone into using it, just saying that if your opinion is based on previous versions you might be surprised at how much better it is now. I was anyway.

I was getting ready to send a laptop back for a problem. The last total back up was a couple weeks old. I created an image back up, and updated a couple more backups of all the files and folders. I was going to tape a note on the laptop that everything was backed up, go ahead and re install Windows if you need to.

Turned out the problem solved itself, but I always assumed you'd want to do that before sending something in for repairs. Back up regularly, and if the computer isn't totally crashed, back up before sending it in.

I did have an anti virus program, AVG, slow down my internet access to almost stopped. It took some time to find the problem. It was years ago, but anti virus programs can really muck with the system.

Everything changes and it's nice when it's in a positive direction. I've had to reverse my position on so many things, I'm hoping it's at least keeping me mentally agile.

I'm so impressed with the Avast boot time scan that it's my favorite free AV right now. That scan saved a computer of mine. It does a restart, and stops the restart about half way through. Then it does the scan when nothing else is moving. It can even find some root kits while doing that.

I'm always willing to give software a second try. Shoot, I've had to give Windows several retries. It seems like every-other operating system MS comes out with is a bust.
