Yes. Evolutionary speaking, I don't see the purpose of cancer.

In essence, this. It's a cell that has gone haywire, and is no longer splitting/reproducing the way it is supposed to. It's a malfunction. I doubt there is an evolutionary reason/benefit to it.

There are a number of causes of cancer, including viruses, bacteria, environmental, genetic etc. But the vast majority of cases are from lifestyle and diet, which actually makes it largely considered a preventable disease.

It's not something that a cell "chooses" to do. Now being completely honest, I haven't had the idea explained to me since Biology in high school, so I'm not as well versed as I should be. But in essence, I think in one of the 4 phases of mitosis (or meiosis, don't quote me) some component has gone wrong, or is missing that would tell the cell "OK, reproduce at this rate for this purpose". Without that...thing telling the cell what to do and how to do it, the cell will keep reproducing endlessly at an unnatural pace.

If I'm wrong, someone will correct me I hope. It has been awhile and I don't keep up with biological science nearly as much as I should.

Yes granted.. and Hemp Oil has been used for 5000 years, but for some reason it was banned in 1937. The point I was trying to make is that big pharma does not endorse Hemp oil because it cannot get a patent for it, hence no profits.

Hemp Oil has never killed anyone, unlike cancer.

                  Cannabinoids Properties:
ANTIPROLIFERATIVE - Prevents cancer cells from reproducing.
ANTIANGIOGENIC - Prevents formation of new blood vessels needed by tumour to grow.
ANTIMETASTATIC - Prevents cancer spreading to other organs.
APOPTOPIC Effect - Induces cancer cells to seek its own death.
Does not effect healthy cells, unlike radiation treatment or Chemo-Therapy.

                  OK - I'll bite -

                  Origin of the Word "Cancer"
The word cancer came from the father of medicine, Hippocrates, a Greek physician. Hippocrates used the Greek words, carcinos and carcinoma to describe tumors, thus calling cancer "karkinos." The Greek terms actually were words to describe a crab, which Hippocrates thought a tumor resembled. Although Hippocrates may have named "Cancer," he was certainly not the first to discover the disease. The history of cancer actually begins much earlier...

Cancer (horoscope) was not named after a disease. I am trying to think that this was a joke - I saw the humor but want to get that clear for people.

Cancer was very rare up until the middle of the last century. Some achaeologists say they have found indications of it in skeletons - others disagree with that conclusion. However -- toxins were not invented in this last century. We are absolutely wallowing in them now, but way back in the days of the early egyptians, they exposed themselves to toxic stuff. A lot of that black eyeliner, for one example was completely toxic. So I'm sure that someone who was exposed to enough crap could get cancer back then as well. They didn't get it more often because they didn't completely douse everything in toxin like we are doing now -- and they had REAL organic food then too instead of this processed fake crap we eat now.

Cancer is the body's way of telling the population that they live in a toxic waste dump.

Everyone has cancer cells all the time. They are cells that become mutated for one reason or another - usually toxins. The immune system usually cleans them out but if the immune system becomes compromised, these deformed cells will start to multiply and that's when the fun starts.

What is really hard to clean up and what most people die from cancer because of is when you are exposed to so much toxin that the body starts to mutate genetically and cells mutate because of the genetic alterations. This can happen because of poor nutrition which weakens cells that are being bombarded with toxins, too many of the wrong types of toxins being stored in the body, or a pre-determined cell weakness (genetic heredity).

When it is the immune system tanking that causes the cancer, the cancer is a LOT easier to kill and most people can survive that if they keep their heads and do the right things instead of running to get zapped with radiation. When it's genetic mutation causing the cancer, it can be almost impossible to stop it no matter what you do.

People with cancer have to be real clear in their minds about doing their due diligence to keep toxins OUT of every bit of their environment that they can -- even to the point of moving away from areas with air pollution (cause of around 60% of all lung cancer), getting where water is as pure as possible (no fluoride or chlorine), wearing natural fiber clothes - yes even synthetic fibers can be harmfully toxic. Food eaten needs to be organic or as close to it as humanly possible. On top of that they have to hit that stuff with every cancer killing element they can get their hands on. They also have to do everything known to man to re-kindle and strengthen their immune system (which is gut flora).

What I find more interesting is that a cancer cell is far more healthy than a normal cell. So healthy, that it over takes normal cells and eventually beats them out. Sad really. Whats scary is that everyone has a very high potential to get cancer, all it takes is that one little tweak, something real simple to kick start those cancer cells into multiplying.

Agreed, a cancer cell is like a living cell on its own. independent and autonomous. It's so healthy that it is able to survive the harsh conditions of the human body. In fact, conditions that are prime for the human body are harsh to cancer cells. eat more fruits and vegetables with regular exercise.

Different cancers have different rick factors such as smoking, drinking, and diet. It may be a person's age, race, or family history that can't be changed.
Although many rick factors may increase your chance of having breast cancer, it is not yet known just how some of these risk factors cause cells to become cancer.

I bypassed this thread last night because it was just too raw for me, you see yesterday hubby underwent surgery to have his Basil Cell Carcinoma removed.

I can only speak from personal experience but according to his doctor, the skin can be compared to a cup or glass and UV rays to water. The glass holds the water until it is too full and begins to run over, when the UV rays get to be too much and begin "to run over", it is skin cancer.

According to him, the skin holds all of the UV rays, they don't dissipate or fade away.

In hubby's case, he has a long narrow birthmark that runs across his lower back and it contains no melanin, therefore could not tan which is our body's natural protection against too much UV rays. Thus his glass spilled over.

Thank goodness they were able to surgically remove it roots and all.

I told hubby from now on, he has to wear his swimming trunks like Steve Urkel from Family Matters to cover it, lol!

Sorry, but humor is one of the ways I try to deal.

Also I want to personally thank HeySal and Thom from the bottom of my heart, for all of their help in battling this. The doctor agreed what we did, did indeed help and therefore he required less surgical removal!

That is a traumatic event for you Terra, it does seem as if the surgeons have done the business, i am sure. Hope all goes well for you and your husband.

Sadly my sister passed away 18 months ago, with an incurable brain cancer, blastoma multiforme stage 4.
I can tell you it was a painful experience, as condition was inoperable so she only had the benefit of keeping the disease at bay with chemo and radiotherapy together.
In my sisters case there was no chance of a cure.

Cancer was very rare up until the middle of the last century.
I don't believe that - I think it was undiagnosed or called by other names. One common cause of illness and death generations ago was "consumption" - we know now that was a term used for diseases such as tuberculosis...and lung cancer, too.

Women died of "female problems" - uterine cancer?

Cancer is not new. We know about it now - we know how to look for and identify it now.

Another thing to consider is that it has only been in the last 100 years or so that human life expectancy has been above 40 years.

Most people just died before they were able to enjoy some of the problems of life beyond 50.

Joe Robinson had the right of it. I just took Bio 101 so this is pretty fresh in my head.

Everyone has cells that mutate. Usually, the process of mitosis has a series of checks that will either repair the cell or destroy it before it has the chance to replicate. Sometimes these checks fail to work, so a mutated cell is able to reproduce. Once it reproduces, it's able to keep reproducing and spreading even futher through your body.

As has been pointed out, these mutations can be influenced by various factors such as carcinogens and genetics.

Now, I don't believe in evolution (yeah, I'm one of those types) but I think if I did the textbook answer would be that without mutations there could be no evolution. Some mutations can be harmful (cancer and disabilities and such), other can be neutral, and others can be beneficial.

The idea behind natural selection is that the bad ones will be weeded out and the good ones will tend to stick around. However modern medicine has kind of screwed up this process and allowed people with harmful mutations to survive and reproduce.

But since I don't believe in evolution I see it more in terms of adaptations myself.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6071727].message }}
  • Though your response is lucid to a point...if you do not believe the mutations were biologically evolutionary, how do you account for the 'adaptations'? Are they selective?

Evolution is about chimps becoming people and such. With adaptations, a group of chimps can adapt to become several different breeds of chimps based on a variety of factors that they encounter.

For instance, several chimps may split of from a main group and move to a new area. Here, they will find new challenges and will adapt accordingly.

There is evidence that cancer was always around -- but not nearly to the extent that it is now. Joe - look at the ages of people getting cancer. Long life has nothing really to do with it. It's toxic overload. Most people have around 200 poisons in their home that they are exposed to daily - in their food, personal care items, water, synthetic fibers, plastic (everything), toxic air from factories.....it goes on and on. It's completely fascinating to think that people don't understand that when your body is storing poisons, it's going to warp the cells.

Terra - Vitamin D actually controls the damage of those rays and melanin protects. Normal sunlight is fine. It's when the skin is burned that those rays turn lethal. With no melanin in that area, I'm betting it got overdosed a lot. Glad it was an easy fix. Just the word cancer can put some people into head spins.

          Interesting thread!

My Mother is having her third dose of Chemo, next week, after successful breast cancer removal.

I didn't really agree with Chemo, considering that 73% of doctors don't agree with it, and the side affects seem to be worse than the cure!

Certainly better than leeches, but not much.

The Hemp oil is interesting, not surprised that the doctors knocked it. As l like to say, if it can make big profits then it will be persuied, but if someone finds a free or cheap option that works just as well or better, then the medical community will knock or suppress it any way they can.

A clear example of this is the medical community, coming together and finding that the lack of sunlight causes Alzheimers, but after the conference, instead of their findings being proclaimed in the media, nothing! Even on the news, we hear nothing, but the usual give us plenty of $$$, and we may find a cure.

They probably will, if a buck can be made!

Sorry about raving on, but when peoples lives are at stake, money should be a second thought, and helping people to get well, ANY way possible should be the number one priority!

But to get back to this thread, Cancer is probably the body's way of saying that it is under too much stress, and diet, etc may need to be improved.

This is borne out by an isolated community in the Andies around the Chinese border, (as best as l can remember) that has an average life span of 100-140, and Cancer, heart attacks, etc are virtually unheard of. Healthy diet, and daily meditation, are probably the main reasons, why

But Kemo, is knocking the immune system, to kill unhealthy cells?

Shouldn't it be the other way around????

According to me, smoking and drinking alcohols is the main and primary reason of this type of disease. Just keep away from both of these things, you will be keep away from the cancer.

It was skin cancer, Basil Cell Carcinoma, the least deadly of all the cancers.

They told us the good thing about Basil Cell (if there is anything good about cancer :rolleyes is that it does not metastasize.

He does gave to go back in 6 months though for a re-check.

If you ask me why cancer exists, I personally think it's because of the 1950's and the 1960's nuclear bomb tests. And the radiation from these blasts does still exist on the planet and destroy our genes.

I must also add that many other everyday things emit radiation such as power lines, microwave ovens, etc.

My cousin for example got testicular cancer because he had his laptop in his lap all the time, which radiated his balls so much that he got testicular cancer in the age of 25 which isn't normal at all. He is free for cancer now when they removed one of his testicles.

You just said a mouthful. They've known for awhile that cell phones cause brain tumors -- but are just getting around to cautioning people not to let kids have them. In Europe anyway. In the US it's still - sell sell sell sell whether it kills someone or not. And people living around microwave towers are getting real sick.

Just put a couple of cellphones head to head and put some popcorn between them and watch that corn pop. Nice eh?

If I had my way we'd get rid of the whole damned microwave grid. Irradiating the planet is doing nobody or nothing any good. People might still be a little sane if they weren't hooked up 24/7, too. So what if a computer would run a few seconds slower - is a little speed worth cooking the whole damned planet?

        Yup. so, so true!

I feel it even when I, for example, lying in the bed with the laptop on my stomach. My stomach rumble all the time because it is beeing cooked by radiation from the laptop.

In most cases Cancer is due to our poor diets, stress, lack of exercise and all the chemicals they put in our food/water and chemicals that leach from cans, bottls, packaging etc. A lot of is is done by design which the FDA and government clearly ignore, and others may be just by accident.

If you consume mostly processed foods, snacks, coffee, drink coke every day, mdconalds, booze etc day after day, year after year, decade after decade, don't be surprised when you get cancer or diabities later on in life don't say you were unlucky, because in a lot of cases you played your part. We were not suppose to eat and drink all this crud. Now I know its hard to eat truly healthy all the time and I'm definitely not perfect and have a lot of improvement to do in that area, but we need to be aware.

It's amazing how parents just feed their kids all this crap without a 2nd thought, but god forbid they start smoking. Things need to change, we need to make eating healthy "cool" but I doubt that's going to be easy because there is to much money and politics behind the scenes.

I'd like to add my 2 cents..

I really believe that our environment, food supply Fruit Veg, Meat/Milk, (pesticides, hormones, anti-biotics, etc) are huge contributors to cancer. I was reading about the Halogens (bromine, chlorine, Fluorine, etc) competing in our bodies with Iodine - a necessary nutrient. When the body is deficient in iodine (it used to be in bread and was replaced by bromide), the others compensate causing disease, cancer, and other vitamin deficiencies (vit d). There are iodine receptors in the breast, skin, prostate, etc - common sites of cancer.

I also believe cancer doesn't happen overnight. There is a mental/emotional pattern that goes along with it - more prevalent in some, negative thinking.

In chinese medicine organs are associated with an emotion - kidney's = fear, liver = anger, lungs = grief. There is a saying "emotions burried alive never die" (they show up in physical form in the body.

Louise Hay (founder of hay house) cured her own uterine cancer with juicing, reflexology, diet, and releasing old mental patterns and lots and lots of anger, from her childhood abuse.

Laughter is one of the best medicines (along with meditation and relaxation).

The War on Cancer = More Cancer. Imo you can't fight and heal. They have associate the color pink with cancer, with all those very attractive ads. Fear = more Disease, more cancer, and More MONEY for Big Pharma..

Yes, I also believe in the population being controlled via disease being created.

    Look up GMO's on youtube.

*Terra - that's such a blessing that your husband is doing well and they got out all the cancer. My neighbor had skin cancer a couple years ago and they got it out - but you have to think - toxins, the liver, too much sun, and all those pesticides in lawn chemicals, weed killer, etc.

We go as all natural with foods and products as possible as we've been aware of the dangers of toxins, etc. for a long time.
