What's wrong with the Music Industry?

This isn't an old lady's rant about Justin Bieber but a what I feel is a valid complaint. The music industry doesn't seem to believe that there's music for everyone. Pop junk is pushed aggressively while other genres are glazed over with barely a banner ad. The reality seems to be that if you can't make a borderline porno music video, your music doesn't count. That's sad.

I found out that Blondie released a new album last September. What?!!! how did I miss this? Vevo couldn't put a banner up?

I know Blondie may not be everyone's cup of tea but neither is Justin Bieber.
Descending from my soapbox now.

  • There's a lot of things wrong with the music industry, but I'll leave that topic to others. I just wanted to comment about that video. Blondie sounds old and tired to me. Her voice has declined with age, as often happens.

Plus, I'm just not a fan of 66 year olds, men or women, dressing and trying to act like they're still kids. I know not everyone will agree, and that's OK, but to me they look like they're desperately trying to recapture their youth.

    • No, I think you pretty much said it - don't get me wrong - I've always liked Blondie, and the band was great - but Debbie has lost her edge. She did sound off. (are you sure that wasn't Lindsay Lohan? :rolleyes

I'd like to see someone else take a whack at the song (Adele?) put some energy into the vocal...

    • She is 66 and did a lot of drugs but imo she still looks pretty good considering. I will agree that, her live show just isn't what it used to be but the recorded version goes back their punk roots and is pretty good.

I most certainly understand that the music industry is only interested in money but imo they're only looking in one place for it. There's money to be made from old rockers.
  • Is that off their new album?
    I like it.
What's wrong with the music industry hasn't changed.
It's still all about the $$$$$$$$$
  • Your answer is in your question:

What's wrong with the Music Industry?

What's wrong with the Movie Industry?

A: Industry - It is an industry because it is a business. The business end of the industry could not give a rat's bladder what sells - as long as it sells.

Sure - there are still a few altruists who believe Art will win out - and if we are lucky, it does...and industry is happy too. You would think competition would dictate quality, but it only dictates quantity in popularity and sales.

And to most on the business side, the muse of industry is money, and it does not care if it's Beatles, or Bieber...it only cares about the bottom line. It just uses art to feed the fire.

  • there is still a lot of good music out there, but it is getting harder to find

  • I think the word "industry" points out to what's wrong with the music these days. By the way, the term "music industry" first was mentioned by Plato in his book Republic about 2300 years ago. Music is a part of culture creation industry, when you want to degrade culture you degrade music -- it's an old formula and it still works. After all, each young generation is very susceptible to music, so its a bullet-proof concept.
  • I always like Blondie and it is a pleasure to hear a new song of theirs.

(That said, I feel weirdly, illogically proud of Justin Bieber. He's a Canadian, so what, why should I care, but it makes me stupidly happy. The only time I actually listen to his music is when my toddler sings, "Baby baby".

    • Everybody from Brian Adams to Neil Young...and you bring up Bieber??

I would rather think of Shania Twain twice...she's preeettiierr! :p

Oddly, this list I brought up on Google, lists Bieber as Canadian pop and R&B signer, songwriter...(R&B ??)

I don't know where the site comes from...but it is titled: "Famous Canadian artists well know for their music."

  • Very simple:
The promoters, producers, recording companies found a formula that sells to the masses.
    i.e. Brittany Spears & company.
    Quality no longer matters.

    • In defense of Justin Bieber, he was not welcomed with open arms by the industry. He blazed his own way via YouTube.com and gained a huge following before he was ever taken seriously by the music industry.
  • I loved Blondie back in the day. I could listen to them 24/7.
I pretty much stopped listening to them after the Autoamerican album, they changed too much from the sound I loved them for.
But I have to agree with Dennis, they sound old and tired.
Not that I blame them I think she is 66 like someone said.
But back in the day they were great, and here are some of the reasons why:

    Blondie X Offender 1976 - YouTube
Blondie One Way or Another - YouTube
Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone - YouTube
Blondie - Accidents never happen - YouTube
Blondie - Rip Her To Shreds.wmv - YouTube
Blondie - In The Flesh (1976) - YouTube
And last but not least, I found this 2010 interview:
Deborah Harry on 60 minutes 2010 - YouTube
