I was just reading a news article about google planning to mine asteroids!
They started as a search engine...
Now there going to be mining asteroids!!

Asteroid-mining company to form with backing of Google chiefs and director James Cameron | Mail Online

What do you think about this?

Probably better in OT; but still very interesting.

I'm curious as to which natural resources we intend to mine from asteroids?

It wont benefit humans i doubt, they will mine diamonds and other space rocks to sell for billions and make money.. Im sure a bit of a asteroid would be very pricey anyway.

According to the Meteorite Men, most meteorites retail for $30 gram, just as a meteorite.

Some of the meteorites contain much more valuable gems.

Olivine is a gem that occurs in some meteorites that makes it very profitable to use acid to melt away the meteorite and retrieve the gems buried within.

      Rare "asteroid" metals?

As we are reaching our carrying capacity our natural resources are depleting and fast, scientist fear this and are thinking fast for a possible solution. Asteroids contain many of these raw material that we humans need for our society.

Agreed! Just like the diamond industry holds back over 80% of the mined diamonds to keep the prices high the precious metals industry does other manipulations.

We don't need to rely on fossil fuels at all. We could have 5 methods of free energy in a month, but there's no money in that.

If we do want to rely on oil we have enough under the Rockies to last the USA for over 200 years at current usage and Mongolia has enough for us for 100 years, and Russia has enough for us for 350 years or so.

We don't need these resources but even if we really did, we are in no danger of running out.

We're OVER carrying capacity now - underground copper has less than a 10 yr life expectancy. Recycling efforts are really being stepped up to try to save as much for recycle as possible. I know home demolishers and contruction are saving every cent worth. Copper is essential to our way of life (unless they find something equivilant, which they have not at this date) and it is a metal that is found on some meteors.

There are several metals on asteroids that we really need. I'm not sure about gold on an asteroid. Other planets - but figure this one. How do you think gold ore becomes gem gold? Bacteria. So if they are finding gold on an asteroid - at one time at least, there was bacteria on that rock too. That means there was life - wherever that planet was that blew up and left asteroids.

Copper kills virus bacteria - including super-viruses. Handling money is pretty risky and copper coins would do us a double treat. With copper as scarce as it is now, it would also be an ideal metal for currency if they get rid of the Fed and go back to metal backed currency. If someone can bring some in from asteroids, that would be good. They have to get the copper from someone to mint it.

It's all very interesting - but I think I'll stick to doing my gem hunting on this planet. I'm just so old fashioned.

The writing on the page seems strange.

NASA scientists say the high concentration of raw materials found in asteroids - such as ingredients for fuel and precious metals like iron and platinum - could supply Earth with vital stockpiles of natural resources.
    Precious metals like iron???

Ingredients for fuel?? If they can make gasoline out of some of them they could be precious but that's a few years away.

I'm guessing it was put together in a hurry.

Here's a quote from a BBC article from a while back about a single asteroid called Eros:
In the 2,900 cubic kms of Eros, there is more aluminium, gold, silver, zinc and other base and precious metals than have ever been excavated in history or indeed, could ever be excavated from the upper layers of the Earth's crust.

That is just in one asteroid and not a very large one at that. There are thousands of asteroids out there.
      http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/sci/tech/401227.stm
In other words, there's more gold in that one asteroid than all the gold ever mined in human history. And we haven't even discussed other metals like silver or platinum.

That is cool information Kurt. Thanks.

According to a reference on a program I saw on the science channel, they could take two 1200 sq ft homes, and within the cubic-volume of those two houses, they could easily put all of the gold that has ever been mined on earth and still have room to spare.

Gold is so malleable that Less than an inch cube can be pounded out to the size of a tennis court. Gold also is pretty much renewable, although it may take time because the raw substance is turned into the gem substance by microbes. I'm not sure how long it takes for microbes to make enough gold to be useable. Scientists, though, are studying the processes. If we need gold we may be able to farm it (silver, too).

Hey here's a good idea - wonder if Roundup(Monsanto) kills microbes that make gold and silver? That would be a good argument to a greedy congress for putting a lid on that company and nailing it shut.
