"Untraceable" and Cyber Crime Investigation

Hi all,

I've been re-watching "Untraceable" tonight. The movie was rated so-so on Netflix but I really liked it (although it was a little too gory for me). The Internet aspect of it was what I loved.

Did anyone understand Diane Lane's explanation of how the site was always up even though it was constantly being shut down by the authorities? How accurate/realistic is the movie's technical premise? (I'm not at all techie and understood only a portion of the technical premise of story.)

I'm doing some research for a project and need to know: if someone was seriously interested in becoming a cyber crime investigator, how would they go about it and what are the job opportunities in that field -- either privately or publicly with a government law enforcement agency (local, FBI or otherwise)?

I did a quick Google search, but all I found was a list of those organizations selling "get certified as a cyber crime investigator" courses. You know, like those "become certified as a medical billing specialist, transcriptionist, electrician," etc. I'm NOT interested in that. (And yes, I'm a bit too impatient to do a further search at the moment.)

If someone was looking for a "real" job with a law enforcement agency, what kind of education/training would it take to get a job in that field? (And I'm sure it's no two-bit certification from some correspondence/Internet school.)

Thanks for your help.

I would think that there would be many levels you could enter the field from. You might just cruise the net looking for suspicious characters, like adults stalking children, then locate their servers and urls -simple stuff. Some of it takes high-level education in security systems and hacking, engineering level detail. It would be an interesting prospect for employment though, at any level.

I thought it would be interesting too. It's a project that really intrigues me. I just know zilch about it.

Call the FBI, they can probably tell you what kind of jobs there are and how to get into it.
You probably will get better info from them than online. Might be through homeland security these days.

Hi there. My attention was instantly drawn by the idea, I think it's amazing! This would work wonders in the hopes of decreasing / solving various crimes. It could also be the best measure to take down those behind child pornography and exploitation in the Internet. I tried searching for it via different search engines but the results that returned were those like yours, I'll take the question to other forums and get back to you if I find an accurate answer.

    Regards,

I would recommend talking with some folks from either you're local police force or your state's police force - here in NC its call the SBI (State Bureau or Investigation). I'd recommend hitting their PR folks first - but expect to get vetted so they're sure you're not trying some sort of social hacking. The best place to learn is from someone already doing it - tell them what you're interested in and ask them to lunch. Can't hurt (and if it does I'll deny everything :-) )

Good luck - I'm starting a class on the GRE, hoping to head back to grad school in the next 18 months to study something I want to study - instead of something for the job....

    best,
