Not a very 'peaceful' thing to do, for someone named 'World Peace'...

Good grief... that was one heck of an elbow!

    • Absolutely correct Dave.
    • You know, the first time I saw this I thought "suspend him at least for the rest of the season and then the first playoff series", but after watching it again I think you are right Dave. Just ban him from the game. After all, he was one of the guys who went into the stands after fans. He's had his second chance. The NBA isn't the NHL.

      • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • He kept a lid on himself for about 3 years but ...
  • Not the first time for him for behavior like that. Guys like him are why I no longer watch the NBA. That and the poor officiating.
  • Another few inches forward on the guys head (temple) and he could have caused a major concussion, hemmoraging of the brain, or even death.

I say again...he should be banned permanently.
  • I doubt if 90% of the players themselves want him banned for life.

But we'll see what's going to happen.

Just last April, World Peace won the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, primarily for his work in mental health awareness.

    • C'mon Kim...he should be able to nail a player in the head whenever he see's fit.

After all, that award puts him above integrity and character and all that...

  • I know a guy that was killed by a blow to the temple. Sure let the guy be above any REAL reprimand for violently dangerous behavior -- just make sure that he's not above murder charges.

    • Not enough. The NBA needs to take a hard stance, similar to how the NFL is taking a hard line against intentionally trying to knock players out of the game. The sport needs cleaned up. Thug-ball is one of the reasons the sport has been suffering declines in attendance and television share for years.

That may not be the case in every city, but overall it is. A couple years ago there was another NBA thread and I did some searching online for stats, and found that over the last ten years (that stats were availabe for) the NBA lost either just over or just under 50% of it's TV share -- I can't remember which it was, but I remember being a little surprised it was that much.

I still love college basketball, but haven't watched the NBA in several years, so if you think that disqualifies my opinion that's fine, but there are a lot of ex-fans. Stern needs to step down. He's doing the sport no good.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Gee, I wonder why the NHL isn't called "thug-ball"?

Within the last 2 months 2 teams started fighting before the 1st puck was dropped and fighting is an accepted part of the game.

Oh, that's right, they play with a puck.

Some have argued that the criticism of the NBA is hypocritical and some of it race based, ...

...considering the relative lack of criticism in the media of Major League Baseball, National Football League or The National Hockey League or players could be called...

    ... thugs on ice.

If folks want to see the best basketball on the planet they still must tune into the NBA no matter what some critics say.

    • Who? Where? I've never seen that, but then again I don't pay much attention to the NBA anymore.

I would agree with thugs on ice. It has nothing to do with race (speaking for myself). It has to do with fighting in a sport where fighting isn't supposed to be part of the sport. See, I wouldn't call boxing a thug-sport because they are supposed to fight. I also wouldn't call college basketball thug-ball because scenes like that are much more rare.

I think the college game is much better, but "best" in this case will always subjective. If you want to be honest about it, there is no "best" between the NBA and the NCAA. There is only a personal preference. Enjoy your thug-ball, my friend!

Good news for you though, I saw one site that reports that NBA viewership is up 36% this year. They said that put it on a par with hockey's Stanley Cup. Maybe it's making a comeback!

  • The NBA is far cleaner today that it was in the 70s or 80s.

Try driving the lane and dunking over Wes Unseld. He would have put you in the 3rd row of seats.

Dave Cowens or Bill Lambeer would get into a fist fight just about every night.

Kareem had one of the biggest cheap-shot punches when he sucker-punched Kent Benson. And let's not forget Kermit Washington's punch that broke Rudy T's face.

The NBA has added rules to prevent the extra BS, such as not being able to leave the bench during a fight, as well as automatic suspensions for any player throwing a punch.

even if that is so, it is obviously not enough.
I still stand by my statement:

    • I think I agree. The referees seems to blow their whistles far more often nowadays, which is one of the reasons why I have lost a bit of interest to be honest. It just interrupts the flow of the game.

That said, I do not approve of this type of behaviour of course.

  • D-uh. Hello Captain Obvious.

The difference is in how the game is played and officiated at the two levels, not who the players are. Too subtle for you?

Wrong. The "best" is always subjective in this context. Who is the best guitar player? Which is the best sport, tennis or badmitton? Who is the best mother? What is the best breakfast cereal?

The "best" is always subjective, and all your blathering won't change that. All you are saying is what YOU think is the best, but you do not speak for anyone but yourself.

It's an opinion, and your false dichotomy is what has no basis in this discussion. Your opinion is different from mine. Sorry you can't accept that, but all you're doing is arguing about whose opinion is right. How smart is that? Neither opinion has to be useful to someone else, that's why they are OUR opinions. Everybody gets to have their own. And you don't get to decide the value of my opinion for everyone else. You might want to look into why you keep trying to do that, or why you think your opinion is better or more important than others.

Why don't you say what you mean instead of making allusions? And tell us your name. You post under a pseudonym and make all sorts of derogatory inferences. How brave of you! If you want to stand up for YOUR values and opinions, and especially if you want to cast aspersions on me, then stand up and be proud of YOURSELF instead of hiding behind a comic book nickname.

Calling someone a hater because they don't see things as you do is lame and intellectually vacant. Nonsense is subjective. You want to call me names? Come out from behind your anonymous user name and be responisible for your words like an adult.

You really have a lot of trouble with comprehension when someone doesn't agree with your way of looking at things, don't you? I never said it wasn't popular, and I never said it was on its deathbed. I merely pointed out its lost over half it's television audience in a 10 year time period.

Unlike your opinions that you try to force on everyone else, that IS a fact.

    • Wow... this thread is getting a bit heated. I wasn't trying to spark a war here, lol. I was just pointing out the irony between a man's name and a man's actions.

So guys, please ... on the count of 3... everyone take a few deep breaths, walk into the kitchen and grab a nice cold beer (or 3). Then come back here and shake hands with each other!

    • Frosty?

      Cranky Old Man?

Hmmm...I think I have an idea to throw at Ben and Jerry's...
  • Moi? Cranky? It's all a disguise....c'mere, let me give you a hug......
  • If you're referring to me, I'm all for it. I didn't start the war of words, TL did. When he announced the penalty Artest got, I stated my opinion that it wasn't enough and called it thugball. What is a thug?
Websters Dictionary: a cruel or vicious ruffian
Cambridge Dictionary: a man who acts violently

Seems pretty descriptive of what I saw in that video, but for some reason TL got all bent about me calling it thugball and made comments such as these...

He didn't answer me as to who has made that argument, it's not one I've heard before, and we all know what he was inferring with his thinly veiled comments.

He also brought in a discussion from another thread, where he once again tries to paraphrase my words in a way that changes what I said. That's one reason he gets into so many arguments here, he assumes meanings, doesn't ask for clarification, and changes what people say to whatever he thinks will help him to make his case.

We're use to that, but I'm not going to let him get away with insinuating I'm a racist. That's damned ugly and damned untrue. I don't like violence, seen enough of it in my life. That could have been anyone throwing that elbow and I'd say the same thing. It's thuggish behavior -- period -- and thus, my thugball comment.

His inference is disgusting. Any decent person would be insulted. Maybe I should just start reporting him for making such vile comments.

      I say...

Once again, you prefer to watch the college game instead of the pros and that's great.

      But...

If you are saying the college game is a better played game than the pros - you would be dead wrong.

It would be like saying minor league baseball is a better played game than the majors and it does not compute.

      BTW, ( My identity??? )

What diff does it make if everyone in here knew exactly who I am or not??

I'm not hiding behind anything and many people who've been around here know exactly what I'm about and my views on many subjects - including you.

      Thug Ball:

You are the one who introduced the term "thug-ball" into the thread.

You used that term for the entire NBA and told me to enjoy it.

( no need for semantic gymnastics here )

And I repeat that only folks with a particular world view would use that particular term.

But perhaps, ( and not a shock to me )...

... you didn't/don't understand the term you choose to use.

You can do the google thing and google "thug-ball" and "thug-basketball" and see what pops up if you like...

... then maybe you can understand why I have said what I said about world views in relation to the term.

If it's not too much trouble, ...

...no one else needs to respond to what I've said above except Dennis if we so chooses.

If someone was to actually have consequences for their actions they might get back to what they are getting paid for, playing a game.
